SFFS has a good Trinitarian formula for it. Video (I normally do it more quickly, but I like his recording). Good for kids.
• ACS911 / GWA052 Glory to God / Eer aan God (Marus Veenstra, Netherlands) A simple song, which is most beautiful if you can add harmonies. It includes a "Peace be with you" as well, and you could use them together or separately. Sound sample.

• CoC21 Gloria (Colin Gibson, New Zealand) This Latin Gloria could be sung as a simple chant, a 3-part canon or a four part chorale!
• GC(II)190 Glory to God in the highest (Beneath the Tree of Life) (Marty Haugen) Communion response A good joyful Gloria. Older versions have "his people", but newer versions have "God's people". Sound sample. 
• MV124 Glory to God in the Highest (Trinidad) A good simple Gloria from the Carribean Conference of Churches. Lyrics.
• STB019 Glory be to You O God / Joy Probhu tomari joy (Bart Shaha, Bangladesh) Happy! The tune will need to be taught, but it's not difficult and the words are quite simple in English. The first phrase could be sung in Bengali if you would like to include some language other than English, but don't want to learn a lot of words in another language. Sheet music sample.
• STB127 Glory to God in the highest / Ara hehelnu kulehe dhau (Justin Ekka, India) If you are unfamiliar with Indian melody lines, it would be helpful to find someone to sing it for your first. It's also in Kurukh language, which is one of the indigenous languages of India. It doesn't work so well in English. Sheet music sample.

God is lamenting Israel's foolishness and the damage done to the earth.

Psalm 14
Doesn't anyone around here believe in what is true?

• Emergent Psalter Fools say in their heart "There is no God" (Isaac Everett, USA) An excellent, modern refrain which is very singable, and can be sung with a second refrain over the top from Psalm 53. Sheet music (refrain only).
• MV31 Pure love (Linnea Good, Canada) A simple two-part chant that picks up the Psalmist’s idea of the purity of God’s law “Pure love, pure truth, pure justice, God”. Would be great if you can teach it to some of the congregation before worship starts. Sound sample. Good for kids.
• PfAS014B Prone to wander (Robert Robinson, England) A simple refrain based on an old hymn, sung to the first two lines of the familiar tune BEACH SPRING. I would sing this quite slowly and reflectively. Lyrics are simply "Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, prone to leave the God I love". Tune sample and sheet music. New words to old tunes.
• VU735 Dear God who loves all humankind (Charles Hubert Hastings Parry, England) Simple familiar refrain. It's the first line of the old hymn "Dear Lord and Father of Mankind" with a responsive Psalm setting. This would be a nice way to do the Psalm this week. Sample sheet music. New words to old tunes.
• 🌏 GC(II)660 / G(3)750 Deliver Us O Lord of Truth (Hermann Steumpfle, USA) Very challenging words to a good well known American folk tune (LAND OF REST - TiS 324). "Deliver us, O Lord of Truth, from speech unbacked by deed, from lives that by their faithlessness deny our spoken creed" (don't worry, it gets more positive in the later verses). • TiS 469 This is the truth we hold (Basil Bridge, England) This is a new one for me. It has very positive words about Christ as our truth through the ages. The tune is also new, but is not difficult, especially if you play it through once before starting to sing this. "This is the truth we hold, source of the joy we share, hope that can make us bold, trusting the name we bear: that "Christ has died" and "Christ is risen, in Christ shall all be made alive". • 🌏 Online Resource / Tune In / NCYC'07 Forgive us now (Dave Brown, Australia) I think I’ve been suggesting this one a lot lately, but it also fits well with this reading “Forgive us now, O mother love for all the idols we have built, For all the time we’ve worshipped there in company of dark despair. Forgive us mother of all hope”. Lyrics, sound sample and free songbook.
• GWA152 The mind of God is forever changing (John Bell, Scotland) At the very end of this passage, we hear that God relents, and does not bring disaster on Israel. God is constant about somethings, but other things change. This is a little challenging to sing, but the words are just terrific. Maybe get a soloist to sing it at first. Lyrics (in an order of service).

• Iona (SBL) / MV068 / G(II)405 / GC581 / GtG578 / PfAS009A Kyrie Guarany / On the poor, on the poor / Oré poriajú verekó (Pablo Sosa / Guarani people, Paraguay) A simple Kyrie from Paraguay; this is a favourite at Brunswick. The English translation varies depending on the source (we don't sing On the Poor). Sound sample in Guarani. Sound sample in Greek (Hey, that's my family singing!)  Good for kids.

"Forgive us now, O mother love for all the idols we have built, For all the time we’ve worshiped there in company of dark despair. Forgive us mother of all hope”. • 🌏 Iona (Sent By the Lord) / MV066 Senzenina? / What have we done? (South Africa) This beautiful chant from South Africa asks the question that we often ask when things go wrong beyond belief. It's important to know what the song means when singing it. If you have some part-singers in your congregation, this would be particular good. It's good to let people ask this question. It is also on the soundtrack for "The Power of One" so you could also play the recorded music if appropriate. Sound sample. Free sheet music. Maybe this could work as a Psalm response?
• MV015 / GA186 Holy Sacred Spirit (Monica Brown) Gentle chant, which would work well at the start of the service. Can be used without the cantor part. "Holy Sacred Spirit, breathe your breath on us". Youtube (VERY SLOW) Good to help kids settle.  
• 🌏 STB043 Lord we did not live up to your teachings / Amra tomar adesh rupe (Bart Shaha) A Bengali Kyrie. The translation is good, and quite challenging. This will need to be taught; it could be sung in Bengali, because (like a Kyrie) it's repetitive. Sample sheet music.
• 🌏 AoV1-158 / GA438 Create a new heart Holy Lord / A new heart for a new world (Monica O'Brien / Trish Watts, Australia) Very simple melody, excellent words "Create a new heart Holy Lord, beckon our lives through your word, open our eyes to your call, United as one for your world". Lyrics and slightly odd sound sample.
• TiS 712 / AoV2-021 / ATE 269 / The tide has turned songbook Create in me / us a clean heart O God (Digby Hannah, Australia) A big favourite in our congregation, and a big favourite of mine. Lyrics & sound sample.
• GA040 Create in Me a Clean Heart O God (Monica O'Brien, Australia) Nice refrain and simple cantor part for this Psalm.
• GtG423 / W&R378 / PfAS051H Create in Me a Clean Heart O God (John Carter) A very simple, and repetitive version of the Psalm. Lyrics and sheet music sample. 
• VT141 Create in Me a Clean Heart O God (Andrew Kreider, USA) A good refrain, which has an almost jazzy plainchant feel to it (in my head, anyway), and cantored verses. The refrain can also, of course be used with read verses too. 
• GC(II)409 / G(3)477 Lord Jesus Christ son of the living God (Carol Browning) A simple chant based on "The Jesus Prayer" with a beautiful (and optional) cantor which is really worth using. Nice chords! Nice sound sample and sheet music sample Sound sample  Lead sheet.  
• Cha743 Create in me a clean heart O God (Carl Mueller) Very simple refrain based on a choral work, with a responsive reading. Here's a recording of the choral work.
• PfAS051I Lord Have Mercy (Kathleen Hart Brumm) A simple call and response Kyrie. Lyrics and Midi sample. Good for kids if you sing it with some energy.
• GtG431 / SFFS 2134 / VT153 Forgive Us Lord / Perdón Señor (Jorge Lockward, USA / Raquel Mora Martínez, USA) Call and response prayer of confession. Recording.
• NCH784 Create in Me a clean heart (Emma Lou Diemer) Easy to sing. Nice words. 
• Online Resource Create in Me a pure Heart O God (Bruce Harding, Canada) A nice round, with an optional descant part.  Good for kids. Free sheet music .
• Iona (Love and Anger) / StS067 / PfAS051G / STB120 Have mercy on us Lord / Khudaya rahem kar (Pakistan) A nice alternative. It would be nice to get your congregation to sing something from South Asia. PfAS uses only the first line as a Psalm refrain, which may be the simplest approach for Anglo congregations to dip their toes into South Asian melodies. Lyrics also in Urdhu, but works well in English too. Youtube.

• Psalm Project - Sharing the Road Wash Me Clean (Richard Bruxvoort-Colligan, USA) A nice, gentle reworking of the Psalm. Might be good to ask a musician to sing this one. Available here.

• TiS 693 / AoV1-031 / GA212 Come as you are that's how I want you (Deirdre Browne) This song is beautiful, gentle, simple, and very well known. Lyrics and sound sample. A good song to start the service. 
• VU360 / Cha074 A woman and a coin / the coin is lost (Jaroslav Vajda) Very appropriate lyrics, which ask whether we are the lost child or sheep. Tune is a little tricky so will need to be taught. Choral sound sample.

• MV020 God of still waiting (Carl P Daw) Good words about God waiting for us and the promise brought by the Spirit. Tune is quite beautiful, and will need to be taught at least a little. Lyrics.

• ATN 77 / G(II)542 / GC749 O Welcome All You Noble Saints of Old / In Christ There Is a Table Set for All (Robert Stamps) We often sing "We and God at Table are sat down" instead of the original "God and man at table are sat down" from ATN 77, however, the Gather hymnals use "In Christ there is a table set for all" which I also really like! Good for celebration of communion Older style lyrics. Good for kids.
• 🌏 Online Resource God is like a foolish farmer (David Bjorlin) Many images of God as farmer, lover, ruler and shepherd, all of them "foolish", but all of them more loving and caring than our usual image of these types of people. • TiS 721 / Iona (LFB) / URW431 / Lau124 He became poor that we may be rich (John Bell) A simple chant. Timing is a little bit tricky, so you will need to take a little time to teach it initially. This has gorgeous parts if you have some singers. "He became poor, that we may be rich, loving the world and leaving his throne; King of all kings, and Lord of all Lords, flesh of our flesh and bone of our bone". Sound sample.
• SiS409 / ATA 162 / A&M699 / SFFS 2075 / W&R338 / GGives2 / Srce401 / MP398 / VU167 King of kings and Lord of lords (Nomi Yah / Sophie Conty) This song, written by two 13 year old girls is sung to a Hasidic folk tune, this is a simple, well known round. VU also has words for Easter and Pentecost. Have fun with this. You could even do it like Petra :-). Good for kids.
• G(II)249 / GC319 / GC(II)325 Close as tomorrow the sun shall appear / Walk in the Reign (Rory Cooney). I really like this one. “Close as tomorrow the sun shall appear. Freedom is coming and healing is near. And I shall be with you in laughter and pain to stand in the wind and walk in the reign”. Nice little lyrics twist there! The 4th verse mentions specific locations (Soweto, Gdansk, Tiannemen Square, The Bronx), which you could retain or change, as you feel appropriate. This sound sample gives it a bit of a gospel feel. • ELW610 O Christ What Can It Mean for us (Delores Dufner) Excellent questioning lyrics. Sung to an older hymn tune, that's not familiar to me, but you could use these lyrics to a wide range of tunes if you like them. New words for old tunes. Lyrics and sheet music. 
• TiS 185 Alleluia / We praise you God Creator Lord (John McIntyre) A chanted Alleluia based on Pachelbel's canon, coupled with some nice affirmations of faith from a 2nd part of the congregation, or cantor. This is quite lovely.
• VT074 O worship our God all glorious above (Robert Grant, England / new version!) This rewrite of the old classic "O worship the King, all glorious above" to include a feminine God is just delightful; it is still very "battley" but reads so differently when it is feminine image, which is a helpful way of expanding how we think about the sovereign nature of God. I would sing it to whichever tune your congregation is used to. I like HANOVER best (TiS 133). Lyrics. New words to old tunes. 
• CH289 / GC(II)341 Lift up your heads eternal gates (Weissel / Bell) I like how this reworking of the old standard turns the violent battle kingly God image on its head and points to Christ instead. "God's catchless and majestic strength in all its height, depth, breadth, and length, now is revealed its power to prove, by Christ protesting "God is love!". The tune is a lovely old medieval-style tune, which should not be difficult. The chorus has been written in 4 parts which would be great if you can get some singers to sing the parts, or teach your congregation the chorus before the service starts. "Wherever freedom reigns, where sin is overthrown, Where justice fused with mercy rules, there you are known. • TiS 174 / UMH194 / A&M544 / CP(E)259 / 82Hml-585 / StF012 Morning glory starlit sky (William Hubert Vanstone) Quite formal words, but very very beautiful song of God's boundless love "Drained is love in making full, bound in setting others free, poor in making many rich, weak in giving power to be". The tune is not difficult, but will need to be taught to a congregation if not familiar. The lyrics could also be read as a poem, and challenges the image of Christ as monarch, but also affirms God's reign. Lyrics.

The newer tune is pretty groovy (I loved it as a kid!), and has lots and lots of alleluias. The words also vary a lot between hymnals. So, the best would be a combination of the TiS words and the AHB tune 287 (ii). Yeah, this was my other church rock favourite of 1979. 1960s sound sample!

• MV106 I am the dream and you the dreamer (Curtis Tufts) A beautiful and simple song, based on images from Rilke's "The Book of Hours". I like it as a reminder that God still comes to us in dreams. It's nice because sometimes it seems like the "I" is the singer of the song, and sometimes the "I" is God. Sound sample.

• AoVK-159 / CH194 / UMH657 / SiS012 / VU412 / W&R652 / Cha286 / StF152 This is the day this is the day that the Lord has made (Les Garrett, New Zealand / Folk tune, Fiji) Classic happy-clappiness here. I sang this song so much as a child that I grew to dislike it, unfortunately. Since learning that the tune is Fijian, I think this song deserves to be revitalised, with respect to our Pacific neighbours, and with the sound of Pacific Island guitars. You could also sing it "antiphonally" - get one half of the congregation to sing the first two lines, and then the other half to sing back to them with the next two, then one line each, then all together - maybe I'm getting carried away with this idea. • Online Resource / GWA080 / MV45 / SP&P051 / VT023 Hamba nathi (Unknown, Zulu, South Africa) There are many sets of English words to this tune, which is best sung in its original language (isiZulu). I like "Come walk with us, the journey is long", even though the original language simply means "Go with us Lord", so versions using "Go with us Lord, and set us all free" are also good, particularly as a sending song. • StB040 / GtG617 / PfAS150C / TLUS037 Blest be God praised forever / Rab ki hove saaa hameshaa (Unknown Punjabi, Pakistan) A setting of the Psalm from Pakistan. It is partly call and response, but not completely, so will need to be taught, unless you have the congregation only join in the repetitive parts. Great to get kids involved with finger cymbals or a simple drum beat. PfAS doesn't give a tempo, but StB indicates crotchet (quarter note) = 140. Sheet music sample.

• URW093 Christ is the Truth the Way (Ruth Duck) Excellent words of the leadership of Christ, sung to the majestic tune DIADEMATA. This is just excellent for this Sunday! Lyrics. New words to old tunes
• CH289 / GC(II)341 Lift up your heads eternal gates(George Weissel / John Bell) I like how this reworking of the old standard turns the violent battle kingly God image on its head and points to Christ instead. "God's catchless and majestic strength in all it's height, depth, breadth, and length, now is revealed its power to prove, by Christ protesting "God is love!". The tune is a lovely old medieval-style tune, which should not be difficult. The chorus has been written in 4 parts which would be great if you can get some singers to sing the parts, or teach your congregation the chorus before the service starts. I prefer to sing it to the tune by James Minchin (THE STRIFE IS O’ER), which is found in the Australian Hymn Book, rather than the more traditional minstrellish VULPIUS (Oldy-but-a-goody). The newer tune is pretty groovy (I loved it as a kid!), and has lots and lots of alleluias. The words also vary a lot between hymnals. So, the best would be a combination of the TiS words and the AHB tune 287 (ii). Yeah, this was my other church rock favourite of 1979. 1960s sound sample!

AHB has emphasis on Thomas verses, but Gather hymnals have some nice verses about the women finding Christ risen. This tune can be really pretty cool and varies in many hymnals: plainchant, hymn or fairly majestic contemporary mass music. Lyrics and sheet music.  Oldy but a goody.

• VU185 You tell me that the Lord is risen (Rob Johns) A good hymn to a familiar hymn tune (NOEL) that tells the story of Thomas. Lyrics. New words to old tunes.
• Recorded music: Doubting Thomas (Nickel Creek) One of the most powerful songs I know about being a postmodern doubting but faithful Christian. Lyrics here.
• Recorded music: I believe (Zehnder) A great laid-back song about finding it hard to believe in the midst of difficulty and the good times too. Sounds kind of like Sting, I think. "I believe, help my unbelief". Sound sample.
