Songs and Hymns for Proper 15C / Ordinary 20C / Pentecost +12 (August 18th 2013)

Isaiah 5:1-7
The promising vineyard that gives only wild grapes. God's frustrated.
*Tune In / NCYC '07: Forgive us now (Brown). “As we forgive may we be healed, as we reach out….” An excellent ballad seeking forgiveness in a sinful world. Lyrics and sound sample.
Recorded Music If you had a vineyard (Sinéad O'Connor) Ray Gormann played this to our congregation six years ago; taken directly from this passage, this protest song is very moving. It's from the album "Theology". Video.
SFFS 2169 God How Can We Forgive (Duck) Good words of healing in the midst of broken relationships to the familiar tune LEONI. Lyrics (scroll down).
*PH437 / CP591 / W&R586 Our Cities Cry to You O God (Clarkson) Good words of helping to heal injustice in the world. Being the body of Christ. Sung to a very familiar hymn tune. Lyrics and tune sample.
*Tune In: Our God who weeps (Kate Scull) Very simple folk-like tune and challenging and hopeful lyrics. "When death has taken those held dear"... Reference recording, lyrics and songbook available here.
*Iona (Sent By the Lord) / MV066 Senzenina? / What have we done? (South African) This beautiful chant from South Africa asks the question that we often ask when things go wrong beyond belief. It's important to know what the song means when singing it. If you have some part-singers in your congregation, this would be particularly good. It's good to let people ask this question. It is also on the soundtrack for "The Power of One" so you could also play the recorded music if appropriate. Free sheet music (loads a pdf). Good for kids
*Brunswick Uniting Music Why do we listen and fail to hear / Lament - for a people with a people with a dull heart (Whelan) This lament, and it's wailing ooooh would fit quite well with this passage.  Good for kids

Psalm 80:1-2, 8-19
Another vineyard song – parallels to Isaiah but asks for God’s intervention “Restore us, O Lord of hosts. Let your face shine, that we may be saved”.
*Emergent Psalter Restore us God (Everett) Another good refrain and read Psalm with instrumental backing. I'm loving this book.
*AoVK-29 Remember we are your people (Barr) Simple three part chant "Remember we are your people, your people O God". This would work really well as a sung refrain during the prayer of confession. Sound sample. Good for kids.
StJ / G(II)346 / GC506 / GC(II)508 / G(3)586 You Are All We Have (O'Brien) A nice refrain and good cantor parts. Somewhat formal. Sound sample, sheet music sample and a different sound sample.
*TiS 42 / GA047 Lord make us turn to you (Boschetti) A simple refrain and mostly inclusive cantor part. We have sung this at Brunswick some years ago and it went very well. Don't forget that you can use these refrains with a reader if you don't have someone confident enough to cantor.
*Psalm Project (2010) Turn and restore us (Bruxvoort-Colligan) This is a little bit country. Very cool, and I think a younger congregation would probably pick this up fairly quickly.
PfAS080C O Shepherd hear and lead your flock (Morgan) Ps 80 Strong mournful and formal words to the rather Christmassy tune ST LOUIS.
CH573 / UMH523 / StB059 Jesus Savior Lord lo to thee I fly / Saranam Saranam (Sri Lankan) I think this would be an excellent song to sing, not only because the words are good and because the tune is simple and beautiful, but because we need to keep praying for the people of Sri Lanka.
G(II)370 / GC541 / GC(II)540 We Praise You O Lord (Dameans) Quite nice cantored psalm and refrain. Very easy to sing. Sample refrain music and lyrics. Sound sample.
G(II)69 / GC74 The vineyard of the Lord (Guimont) A very simple refrain and read or cantored Psalm. Sample refrain music and lyrics. Sound sample.
W&R632 / Cha512 When Aimless Violence Takes Those We Love (Patterson) Excellent words for a time of grieving violent death. It's sung to the well known tune SURSUM CORDA.
Lyrics.
*Tune In: Our God who weeps (Kate Scull) Very simple folk-like tune and challenging and hopeful lyrics. "When death has taken those held dear"... Reference recording, lyrics and songbook available here.

Alternative Hebrew Scripture: Jeremiah 23:23-29
God is everywhere, and wants to be remembered; speak out!
MV048 I can feel you near me God / Jump for joy (Mayberry) Good song for smaller kids about God being with us. I reckon you could get the kids to Jump in the chorus. Maybe it's a bit too happy clappy for some? Good for kids.
Iona (Enemy of Apathy) / A&M466 / SP223 The love of God comes close (Iona) A good song of God's forgiveness. Simple melody.
TiS 87 / VU862 / HPPS248 You are before me, Lord, you are behind. A beautiful chant setting to this psalm; sung to SURSUM CORDA. The words are directly from Psalm 139 and are very beautiful. Lyrics.
*ATOK 320 / NCH351 / VU645 / StJ / WoV770 / ELW732 / SFFS 2051 / HPP516 I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry. A song of God’s presence in all stages of life. Very simple tune to sing. Lyrics, and a nice (slow) Youtube.
*Worldmaking.net God of My Breathing (Bruxvoort-Colligan). Excellent words to a well-known hymn tune. Sample and lyrics.

Psalm for the Jeremiah reading: Psalm 82
God as judge, desiring justice.
*MV028 / StJ / FFS25 / GC(II)507 / G(3)587 God of the Bible / Fresh as the morning (Murray) Good words. I particularly like the tune by Alonso (MV and Gather hymnals), as the chorus is really joyous. I think this song would be a really good "fit" for our congregation. Good for kids (Alonso tune). Lyrics, sheet music sample. Sound sample.
*TiS 657 / CH263 / VU700 / AA50 / CP(E) 447 / Cha656 / SP242 God of freedom God of justice (Murray / Guthrie Foote) Powerful lyrics. Can be sung to either TREDEGAR (new, but not too hard) or PICARDY (very familiar) or RHUDDLAN. Lyrics and midi.
Iona (M&G) / CH267 Blessed be God blessed be God for ever (Martinez / DANDASOY) Beautiful words to a beautiful, but tricky Philippino melody (unless you have a Philippino congregation, in which case it's just a familiar folk tune). This would be great to ask a small group to sing, if you have some good singers in your congregation. Works nicely with a guitar.
AoV1-083 / GA036 / G(II)46 / GC48 / GC(II)33 / G(3)047 / PfAS082B / URW257 / Lau892 The Lord Hears the Cry of the Poor (Foley) The chorus for this makes a very good refrain for this Psalm, as set in PfAS. Sound sample and lyrics (including verses).
Emergent Psalter You are gods all of you (Everett) A very different verse to focus on in this simple refrain. Sheet music (refrain only).

Hebrews 11:29-12:2
More people living by faith even to the point of getting sawn in half! Since we’re surrounded by such a cloud of witnesses, let’s get on with it.
*NCH497 / SFFS 2208 / PH354 / G(II)508 / GC707 / GC(II)684 / G(3)780 / CP513 / ZSS141 Guide my feet while I run this race An excellent civil rights song. Would work well as a meditative prayer for guidance or as an uplifting call to action at the end of the service. You could also make up your own lyrics. Lyrics. Good for kids.
UMH710 / VU580 / LBW500 / ELW812 / ELW813 / HPP505 / GC600 / GC(II)579 / G(3)677 Faith of Our Fathers living still / A Living Faith (Faber) Good words and a simple, standard hymn tune. Lyrics include fathers, mothers, sisters and brothers. Sound sample, lyrics and sheet music sample.
NCYC09 Stories of faith calling us to explore / Stories of Hope (Hanks / Newton) Not easy, but the words are great. Best to get someone to sing it - perhaps during the offering?
*SFFS 2129 / HPP322 / W&R344 / Cha344 / Srce2-244 I Have Decided to Follow Jesus (Traditional) Good simple traditional chorus. This Australian video from Perth has some nice chords.
Tune In: Hail the fisherfolk. A bluesy litany of the saints, including the fishermen of yesterday and the fisherfolk of today. Sound sample and lyrics.
*AoVK-28 / ATOK 376 Faith hope and love (Watts) This is so easy, and so cool. If you have some groovy musicians, this can even be a very funky rock song. Very easy, and great for kids and non-readers. This remains my son's favourite church song. Good for kids
TiS 643 / UMH206 / StJ / WoV649 / ELW815 / G(II)352 / GC508 / GC(II)513 / G(3)593 / W&R248 / 82Hml-490 I want to walk as a child of the light (HOUSTON) Lyrics here.
CH159 / CP(E) 81 / W&R70 / Srce439 / Lau942 Lord for the years your love has kept and guided (Dudley-Smith) Very traditional, but good words. Some lack of inclusive language that could easily be fixed. Good for a church anniversary too. Sung to a well-known hymn tune (O PERFECT LOVE). Lyrics and sound sample.
*Tune in We are the dream that's longing / Jesus is waiting (Brown) An honest catchy rock song about our hesitation to follow and Jesus not only waiting, but continuing to work and change the world. A good sending-out song. Sound sample, lyrics and songbook available here.
*CH683 / VU420 / A&M491 / GC(II)469 / G(3)546 / CP598 / W&R553 / SP156 / URW132 / Lau426 Go to the world Go into all the earth (Dunstan) Great words of sending out. Can be sung to a couple of different tunes. SINE NOMINE is the easiest and best known. Sound sample. Sheet music sample.
*TiS 749 / AoV1-154 / AoVK-131 / ATE 305 / NCH360 / Iona (SBL, Freedom is coming) / CH800 / UMH497 / VU572 / WoV773 / ELW809 / HPP340 / G(II)484 / GC677 / GC(II)674 / G(3)776 / W&R713 / Cha447 / SP234 Send me Jesus / Thuma mina You all know this one, right? Good for kids.
*ATOK 412 / Iona (SBL, Common Ground) / CH250 / MV212 / SFFS 2184 / Lau855 Sent by the Lord am I / Sent out in Jesus name / Enviado soy de Dios (Traditional Cuban) Great rhythm, good words and not too hard to sing (provided you sing it a little slowly the first time!) I prefer the MV translation "Sent out in Jesus' name". Lyrics. Good for kids.

*TiS 470 / CH742 / UMH708 / WoV689 / LBW26 / ELW264 / A&M308 / CP(E) 227 / W&R531 / Cha476 / SP116 Rejoice in God’s saints today and all days! (Pratt Green) Great words about all the different saints and the importance of remembering them. The 2nd verse which mentions "some carry the gospel through fire and through flood" may be particularly appealing. Works well to the tune PADERBORN, but would be even simpler sung to LAUDATE DOMINUM which would be more familiar. Lyrics and some tune samples, or LAUDATE DOMINUM tune sample.

Luke 12:49-56
Christ comes, not to bring peace, but to bring division. Now Jesus is angry. Vs 49 is pretty full-on!
*TiS 387 / CH416 / UMH318 / VU158 / LBW363 / ELW389 / A&M199 / PH108 / CP(E) 140 / W&R312 / 82Hml-182 / Lau272 Christ is alive Let Christians sing (Wren) Excellent words of Christ's saving, and still relevant grace. GA474 Whence comes this fire (Willcock) I quite like this one and it is based directly on the first verse of this passage. I'm not sure how it works with a congregation. I would do with with a small vocal group and cantor first. Sound sample.
Tune In: Our God who weeps (Kate Scull) Very simple folk-like tune and challenging and hopeful lyrics. "When death has taken those held dear"... Reference recording, lyrics and songbook available here.

God makes a covenant with the childless Abram; God’s faithfulness
ATA 153 / Srce686 / PfAS105B The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases (McNeill) Can be a mushy favourite, and the language is not inclusive in older versions; PfAS uses “God’s mercy never comes to an end”. PfAS uses it as a sung response to the Psalm. Older style lyrics & chords.
*2010Iona (LFB) / G(II)503 / GC701 / RS818 God It Was who said to Abraham (Bell) Easy tune. Good story words. Note that God is masculine; I think this has been addressed  in more recent editions of Love From Below. Lyrics and sheet music. Slow sound sample.

GA461 / G(II)445 / GC629 / GC(II)608 / G(3)699 God is love and all who live in love live in God (Haas) This is a nice cantor and refrain setting. The refrain is very simple and the cantor part is inclusive. The words are good for distribution of communion. Sample here, but it's pretty clunky. Lead sheet.
*Iona / CH788 / MV104 Know that God is Good / Mungu ni mwema (Traditional Congo) This traditional African refrain is just lots of fun and very simple to sing. Good for kids and adults! Sound sample (a bit "white", but it gives you an idea). It's a while since we've sung this! GA031 G(II)43 GC45 / GC(II)32 / G(3)044 Let Your Mercy Be on Us (Haugen) Three possible responses to this cantor-lead reading of the Psalm. Quite simple.
*AoVK-58 We wait in hope for the Lord (Ford) Simple a cappella round; also good for kids "We wait in hope for the Lord, God is our help and our shield. And so our hearts rejoice, for we trust in God's holy name". I think this could work as a refrain for this Psalm. Good for kids.
TiS 47 / AHB 46 / AoV1-175 / NCH25 / CH161 / UMH117 / VU806 / LBW504 / ELW806 / GA459 / A&M746 / HPP1 / PH210 / GC614 / GC(II)588 / G(3)688 / CP528 / CP(E) 537 / W&R84 / Cha067 /  Srce2-441 / URW200 / 82Hml-680 / PfAS090B / Lau955 O God our help in ages past (Watts) A good solid very well known hymn! MV175 May we but wait (Petricko) A simple refrain which would work well as a response for prayers of Intercession.
*TiS 280 When he comes back, our lamps will be burning to welcome him when he comes back. I really like this song, and wish for excuses to sing it more often. The words are particularly appropriate for this reading and the tune has a simple lilting joy to it.
*Unknown source Alleluia, the great storm is over (Franke) lift up your wings and fly! I especially love the image of the infant sleeping while the mother sang until the bridegroom returned. The chorus is really catchy and very easy to sing. If not familiar, you can use a cantor or soloist for the verses and invite the congregation to join in the chorus. We tend to sing this more like a gospel anthem. Lyrics. Video with poor image but good sound.
*Taize / AoV2-088 / ATOK 395 / CH793 / VU950 / ELW348 Stay with me / Bleibet hier (Berthier) A very well known chant, but we have not sung it at Brunswick for ages! Sheet music and sound samples.

God’s steadfast love, satisfying the thirsty and filling the hungry with good things. Provider.
TiS 67 Give thanks Give thanks to the Lord (O'Brien) A cantored Psalm with a response that is actually fun and happy! The verses could also be read, rather than cantored.
*Taize / MV016 / StJ / ELW528 / GA430 / SFFS 2157 / HPP410 / G(II)398 / GC570 / GC(II)550 / RS710 / CP402 / URW378 Come and Fill our hearts/ Confitemini Domino Can be sun in English as "Come and fill our hearts with your peace, you alone O God are holy. Come and fill our hearts with your peace, Alleluia". Sound samples and sheet music.
AoV1-074 Come To The Water (Andersen) A beautiful song about God providing (from Isaiah 55). Familiar to many, but easy to sing if not. Works well for communion also. Lyrics and sound sample.
*Tune In / NCYC 2009: God has laid a feasting table / Invitation (Whelan) Feminine imagery of God gathering her guests to a feasting table. Fun Cuban rhythm. Sound sample, lyrics and songbook
*ATW 475 Come to the banquet there’s a place for you (White) An excellent song by Melbourne singer and songwriter Faye White. Lyrics (scroll quite a bit). Good for kids.
*AoV2-020 Come to the feast of Heaven and Earth / Table of Plenty (Schutte) “God will provide for all that you need, here at the table of plenty”. I love this song. It’s very straightforward and excellent words.
*PfAS107A Give thanks to God who hears our cires (Duck) Excellent words of God hearing those in despair. Sung to the familiar tune MORNING SONG. It's got 6 verses, so it may be nice to have half the congregation sing to the other half, or alternate men and women for the central 4 verses. Emergent Psalter / PfAS107C May those who are wise (Everett) A good Psalm refrain, with two possible options for alternate refrains. Will need to be taught. Sheet music (refrains only).

*Tune In: Kingdom Come (Lees). A song about what the kingdom might be like, with plentiful images from the parables. Sample and lyrics.
*Online resource: Your New Shalom (Harding) A simple song with 4 verses, including “your desert will bloom again”, with a last verse of “We bring in your new Shalom”. This would work well at any point in the service, including the final song.... or even interspersed throughout. Sheet music sample available, and you can purchase a pdf here.
*WCC website Hear the message we now are proclaiming / El mensaje que hoy proclamamos. This jubilant Colombian song of liberty and new life for the poor and suffering would fit well with this reading. Good for kids. Free sheet music!

Alternative Hebrew Scripture: Ecclesiastes 1:2, 12-14; 2:18-23
The vanity of human toil, and passing on one's work to the next generation.
I just don't know what to suggest for this reading, except what's listed for the Psalm!

Psalm for the Ecclesiastes Reading: Psalm 49:1-12
PfAS049B Come one and all from near and far (Leckebusch)  I think this would be best sung, slowly, by a soloist (or two), with no accompaniment, or very simple rhythm on xylophone.
Emergent Psalter When the rich die they take nothing (Everett) A simple Psalm refrain. Sheet music (refrain only).

Colossians 3:1-11
Focus on things above, put to death earthly sins. Neither Jew nor Greek….

Words and tune. Hymnals vary a lot in the lyrics with respect to thees and thys and words like "vesture".

*TiS 387 / CH416 / UMH318 / VU158 / LBW363 / ELW389 / RS601 / CP(E) 140 / W&R312 / 82Hml-182 / Lau272 Christ is alive Let Christians sing (Wren) Excellent words of Christ's saving, and still relevant grace. A couple of tunes are offered in different hymn books. I prefer TRURO. Lyrics and sound sample.
MV 162 Christ within us hidden, Christ in all and each (Leunig) Very simple tune with quite remarkable words based on a prayer by Michael Leunig. Why is this in a Canadian song book and not any Australian song books?!? Verse 4 and 5 are particularly appropriate for this week’s reading “Christ, in bodies broken, Love new crucified. Christ, the Word new spoken, death by love defied; Christ, in love recovered. Christ, in hope revealed. Christ, in faith discovered. Christ in tombs unsealed”.
Worldmaking.net Hidden with Christ (Bruxvoort-Colligan) "Hidden with Christ, hidden with Christ, all of us deep within God’s love". Tune is simple enough for first-time singers. Sample, songbook and lyrics.
TiS 610 God you touch the earth with beauty (Edgar) A bit mushy, but nice.
*TiS 179 / NCH273 / VU312 / GA379 / StJ / URW073 Praise with Joy the World's Creator One of my favourite hymns - strongly Trinitarian lyrics and excellent imagery. I particularly love the “One God in community” phrase. Some versions change "Son" to "Christ" to make it more inclusive. Lyrics (scroll down).
*CH355 / VU210 / HPP81 / GC(II)525 / RS699 / CP630 You Lord Are Both Lamb and Shepherd (Dunstan) Beautiful words. Can be sung to many tunes. I like it to PICARDY or WESTMINSTER ABBEY. Lyrics.
*AoV1-129 / CH665 / UMH62o / VU467 / ELW701 / HPP525 / G(II)599 / GC830 / GC(II)813 / CP073 / W&R689 / Cha393 / Lau832 One bread, one body. A classic. Don't play it too slow or it takes forever!! Particularly appropriate if you are celebrating communion.
*Tune In: Making things new (Anderson). A groovy one. Great for kids, and lots of fun. Reference recording, lyrics and songbook. Good for kids.
*ATW 463 / Iona (T1AU) / ELW721 / SFFS 2219 / GC(II)451 / G(3)528 / W&R296 / URW436 Goodness is stronger than evil (Tutu / Iona) Words from Archbishop Desmond Tutu. "Victory is ours, victory is ours, through him who loves us". Some congregations change the last line to "Compassion is ours, compassion is ours...". It depends on the context in which you sing it, I suppose. Sound sample. Good for kids.

Luke 12:13-21
Greed is bad; losing sight of God while hoarding.
Online resource: If only I had known (Winfrey-Gillette) Powerful lyrics to the familiar Hebrew tune LEONI. Sheet music and lyrics
Online resource: Bigger Barns (Winfrey-Gillette). Really good lyrics, and the tune, a standard, but unfamiliar hymn tune (TiS 211(i) is a really straightforward alternative). Lyrics.
*Taize / TiS 739 / AoV2-041 / ATOK 404 / VU290 / GA269 / SFFS 2054 / G(II)451 / GC639 / GC(II)626 / G(3)733 / CP568 / W&R421 / URW388 / Lau947 Nothing Can Trouble / Nada te turbe (Berthier) Excellent and quite well known Taize chant. Spanish lyrics are not too hard for non-Spanish speakers. Sheet music, sound samples, lyrics and translations. Good for kids.
*GtB / On the Road God is love and love is giving (Langmead) A simple kids' song about God's love. A round.  Good for kids.
NCH562 / AA127 / Cha381 Take my gifts and let me love you (Murray) Good words about giving God ourselves, our goods, our money. Can be sung either to the set tune by Colin Gibson (TALAVERA TERRACE) which is quite straightforward, or the more well known tune HOLY MANNA. Lyrics.
*AoV2-065 Returning Our Gifts to the giver of life (Porter) Good as an offering song.
Seeds of Faith I've got a gift in my heart (Bruxvoort-Colligan) A nice song for kids. Lyrics, sound sample.  Good for littler kids.
NCH590 / CH621 Spirit of Jesus, if I love my neighbour. Challenging words of offering help from a position of privilege and seeking to be set free from the entrapment of possessions “If I am hugging safety or possessions, uncurl my spirit as your love prevails, to join my neighbours, work for liberation, and find my freedom at the mark of nails”. Could also be sung to the tune PERFECT LOVE if your congregation woudl have trouble with the newer tune.

Songs and Hymns for Proper 12C / Ordinary 17C / Pentecost +10 (July 28th 2013)

Hosea 1:2-10
God is really angry and fed up with those Israelites, but there will be forgiveness.
A Kyrie would work well - there are lots to choose from - here's a long list!
*Tune In / NCYC '07 Forgive us now (Brown). “As we forgive may we be healed, as we reach out….” An excellent ballad. Lyrics and sound sample.
Iona (Enemy of Apathy) / A&M466 / SP223 The love of God comes close (Iona) A good song of God's forgiveness. Simple melody.  Lyrics. Very slow music sample.
FFS19 For the hurt I create (Murray) Beautiful tunes (there are two) and words. Tune (ii) is most simple, so use that if you will sing it as a congregation, but tune (i) is also worth using if you have some good musicians who can sing it for your congregation. If using tune (ii) you may like to suggest to your congregation that they simply join in on the "forgive me, Lord, forgive" line, but make sure you teach it to them first, because the third one is different to the other three. "For the hurt that I create.... for the evil I condone... for works of peace I do not do... for hope and help that I refuse... forgive me Lord, forgive"
FFS20 Forgive forgive us Holy God (Murray / Gibson) Very easy tune for a congregation to sing (and there are 5 verses to learn it in!). The words focus on our desensitisation to violence and our greed, so a nice fit for this week's reading. The final verse has a focus on communion, but still makes sense if you are not celebrating the eucharist this week. Lyrics and a different tune (which is also very lovely indeed) can be found here.
Taize / A&M834 / G(3)959 / SP323 / Lau221 God is forgiveness / Bog jest miloscia (Taize) "God is forgiveness, love and do not fear". A simple Taize chant which seems to suit this reading quite well. Sheet music, lyrics in many languages, sound samples. Good for kids
*Iona (Sent By the Lord) / MV066 Senzenina? / What have we done? (South African) This beautiful chant from South Africa asks the question that we often ask when things go wrong beyond belief. It's important to know what the song means when singing it. If you have some part-singers in your congregation, this would be particular good. It's good to let people ask this question. It is also on the soundtrack for "The Power of One" so you could also play the recorded music if appropriate. Free sheet music (translation not quite correct). Good for kids

Psalm 85
God will speak peace; righteousness and peace will kiss each other. God’s forgiveness and steadfastness.
AoV1-106 / UMH376 / WoV774 / ELW753 / G(II)528 / GC730 / GC(II)724 / G(3)822 / CP562 /  Cha297 / URW443 / 82Hml-712 / Lau904 Dona Nobis Pacem (American folk song) This is very well known, and would fit well with this reading. Good for kids.
Taizé / TiS 713 Dona nobis pacem domine / cordium (Berthier) There is a specific cantor line for Psalm 85 to go with this prayer of peace. Sound samples and sheet music for the refrain
*TiS 409 / AHB 322 / CH595 / UMH543 / VU202 / StJ / Cha250 O Breath of life come sweeping through us (Elizabeth Porter Head) This is a really wonderful older style hymn with inclusive lyrics. Lyrics and sound sample. Not all verses are in all hymnals
*AoVNG55 / Iona (WWHW) / G(II)74 / CP113 Come O Lord and Set Us Free (Ducote / Daigle/ Balhoff) Good simple, inclusive refrain with a pretty groovy cantor line; could work for the younger set. This song appears in a few different formats. There is a full-length short song (WWHW) and a short 7 bar refrain (Gather), either would work well as a response. The refrain is exactly the same melody as the short song, but only uses the words "Come O Lord and set us free, come and set us free". Sample sheet music. Sound sample.
G(II)254 / GC330 Let Me Taste Your Mercy Like Rain (Cooney) Good words of both personal and communal redemption. Simple contemporary tune. Lyrics & lead sheet. Clunky sound sample.
*CH198 / MV001 / HPP550 / A&M365 / GC753 / GC(II)741 / G(3)850 / SP176 / URW058/ Lau458 Let Us Build a House / All are welcome (Haugen / TWO OAKS) This song has wonderful lyrics of hope for what a Christian community can be like, and a chorus that joyfully says “All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place”. Sheet music sample. Sound sample.
*TiS 217 / AHB 148 / NCH43 / CH519 / UMH384 / VU333 / A&M721 / LBW315 / ELW631 / A&M721 / GA463 / HPP48 / PH376 / GC622 / GC(II)613 / G(3)641 / CP485/6 / CP(E) 516 / W&R358 / Cha517 / Srce457 / URW100 / 82Hml-657 / Lau801 Love divine all loves excelling (Wesley) Can't possibly sing this song too often! A beautiful classic song and most hymnals use a very inclusive version of this hymn, even the AHB! "Joy of heaven" *sigh*, so lovely! Lyrics and sound sample. You may also like to give Rend Collective Experiment's version a listen (hard to sing, but nice for listening)
MV222 May the peace of God be your peace (McLaren) A lovely benediction. Will need to be taught first.
CH659 / MV173 / StJ / A&M566 / G(3)824 / W&R389 / SP251 Put peace into each other’s hands (Kaan) Good words for communion; tune is quite simple and flows nicely. Slow sound sample, sheet music with lyrics. Good for kids
*Emergent Psalter Show us your mercy O God (Everett) A simple refrain and read Psalm.
*CH720 / A&M409 / G(3)653 / SP204 / Lau941 There is a longing in our hearts O Lord (Quigley) Good words of longing for God's love, justice, wisdom, healing. A good song for before, during or after intercessions.
PfAS085C Righteousness and peace (Callahan) A nice simple refrain; a little bit majestic. "Righeousness and peace shall go before the Lord".

Alternate Hebrew Scripture: Genesis 18:20-32
Abraham debates God over the destruction of Sodom, and God is convinced to forgive, and not to destroy the city if there are 10 righteous there...
*AoV1-137 / ATOK 403 / GA306 / G(II)286 God Of Abraham lead us (Farrell) I love this energetic call and response with the response "Lead us to your kingdom". Strangely, it doesn't mention David. Perhaps you could make up a "God of David be with us" verse.  Don't try to sing all 17 verses! Choose what you like... You can sing with a cantor and response, or you could split your congregation in the middle doing half and half, or you could just have people singing all the way through. Lyrics (downloads a pdf). Good for kids.
Iona (Enemy of Apathy) / A&M466 / SP223 The love of God comes close (Iona) A good song of God's forgiveness. Simple melody.  Lyrics (downloads a pdf). Very slow music sample.
*Tune In / NCYC '07 Forgive us now (Brown). “As we forgive may we be healed, as we reach out….” An excellent ballad. Lyrics and sound sample.

Psalm for the Genesis reading: Psalm 138
God is great, strengthens us, protects us, God regards the lowly
*Linnea Good I lifted my voice and spoke your name, your word of answer swiftly came a very simple congregational response to the Psalm being spoken. It would be great to do this. Need a confident reader who can preferably lead the singing, or an attentive musician to come in at the right spot. Good for kids.
*Emergent Psalter They shall sing of the ways of the Lord (Everett) Simple psalm refrain and Psalm spoken over music in between the refrains. Sheet music (antiphon only).
GC(II)700 / G(3)799 Lord you lead through sea and desert / You are strong you are holy (Dunstan) Simple version of this psalm with a strong chorus. I don't know if our congregation would like it though. Sheet music. Sound sample
AoV2-002 / AoVK-5 / StS049 / SFFS 2218 / G(II)461 / GC649 / GC(II)627 / G(3)721 / URW158 / Lau776 I will come to you in the silence / You are mine (Haas) Tune is a bit mushy and requires a cantor for the verses (tricky!). The lyrics are excellent and full of strength. Chorus is easy to sing. Keyboard sample. Sample sheet music
Iona (SBL) / CH140 / MV181 / WoV727 / ELW554 / G(II)341 / GC495 Lord Your Hands Have Formed This World / The Earth is the Lord's (Oliano) Good words of creation to a lovely, and not too difficult, Phillippino melody. Lyrics (first verse only) Tune.
TiS 86 / Srce793 With my whole heart I will praise you O Lord (Duba) This refrain is fine. Verses should be read, perhaps while playing the chords in the background.
*NCH085 / SFFS 2082 / Cha623 / ZSS105 Woke Up This Morning (African-American Spiritual) A great Spiritual. If you don't have one of these sources, you can just make it up from this video. This could be a good Sunday to make use of those choir stalls... Good for kids.
ATW 480 On the day I called (Farrell)

Colossians 2:6-15, (16-19)
“Do not let anyone disqualify you”…. a tricky reading, but I liked that phrase.
*Iona (M&G, T1AU) / MV099 / GC(II)673 / G(3)763 / Lau996 Stand O Stand Firm (Cameroon) I love having an excuse to sing this simple and powerful song; didn't Elijah have to be pretty brave? Very easy for your congregation. You can make up cantor parts too “Oh my sisters…. Oh my brothers… Oh my children….” or you can name countries you are praying for in your intercessions. Good for kids. Scottish sound sample. Lead sheet.
NCH332 / VU457 / ELW522 / SFFS 2268 / HPP528 / GC(II)738 / G(3)839 / CP061 / W&R695 As We Gather at Your Table (Daw) Could be sung to HOLY MANNA or NETTLETON, both very popular hymn tunes.
*Brunswick UCA New Songs Come out and Shout (Brown) I think this would work well with this reading; a good song of good news. Since this is new, it would be good to have the musicians present it to the congregation.
*2007TiS 367 / AHB 287 / NCH242 / CH412 / UMH306 / VU159 / LBW135 / ELW366 / A&M217 / PH119 / GC446 / GC(II)459 / G(3)525 / CP212 / CP(E)159 / W&R290 / Cha221 / 82Hml-208 / Lau275 The strife is o'er the battle done There are two possible tunes for this hymn. I prefer to sing it to the tune by James Minchin (THE STRIFE IS O’ER), which is found in the Australian Hymn Book, rather than the more traditional minstrellish VULPIUS. The newer tune is pretty groovy (I loved it as a kid!), and has lots and lots of alleluias. The words also vary a lot between hymnals. So, the best would be a combination of the TiS words and the AHB tune 287 (ii). Yeah, this was my other church rock favourite of 1979.
NCH438 / UMH377 / LBW346 / ELW785 / HPP390 / W&R428 / Cha561 / Srce784 When peace like a river (Spafford) An older American hymn. Hymnals vary in how old fashioned the lyrics are, and only some include the chorus. Lyrics and tune (really terrible old lyrics).
*2007StS116 I saw a tree by the riverside / The Tree Song (Ken Medema) A great kid’s song about roots growing down to the water, and leaves growing up to the sunshine, and bearing fruit, and all that great stuff. Good for kids. Lyrics.

Luke 11:1-13
Jesus teaches The Lord’s Prayer; everyone who asks receives.
*PfAS1049 Abana in Heaven / Abana Alathi Fi Ssama (Laila Constantine) I love this and think it would be very well learned and remembered. It will need to be taught, but it would be worth it, particularly if your congregation says the Lord's Prayer weekly. It can also be sung in Arabic (the word Abana is "Father"). Absurdly short sound sample. It could be sung very slowly and meditatively, or a bit more up-tempo, in which case I reckon it's Good for kids.
*? Online Resource Ground of all being Mother of life (Poole / Newell) A modern translation and call and response version of the Lord's Prayer. There are two key phrases, so it would not be hard to teach if you have an attentive congregation. Youtube. Sound sample, sample pdf, and licensing (search for "Casa del Sol Prayer of Jesus").
PH349 Let All Who Pray the Prayer Christ Taught (Troeger) I don't have a copy of this, but the lyrics look very good. It's sung to the tune CHESHIRE.
*Tune In: Kingdom Come: A song about how things are not what we expect in God’s kingdom. Lots of words and good images including "there's no blacklist or admission fee". Good for kids. Sound sample and lyrics
*GC(II)565 / G(3)655 Lord increase our faith (Haas) Quite nice simple song of devotion and turning to God. Sound sample. Sheet music and lyrics.
*ATFG575 / VU400 / WoV775 / ELW752 / SFFS 2193 / HPP403 / W&R489 / Cha305 / ZSS156 Lord Listen to Your Children Praying (Medema) A simple, repetitive song which would be fun to play around with - you could do it fast or slow. Sound sample and lyrics.
*TiS 607 / AoV2-126 / ATN 95 / CH528 / VU684 / StJ / A&M725 / SFFS 2171 / HPP406 / G(II)524 / GC726 / GC(II)721 / G(3)828 / CP(E)519/ W&R587 / Srce 462 / Lau898 Make me a channel of your peace (Temple) Youtube video of Sinead O'Connor singing it and lyrics and MIDI file.
*URW453 Our Father in Heaven (Oppenheimer) A simple call and response arrangement of the more modern translation of the Lord's Prayer. I think this could work very well for BUC.
URW454 Our Father in Heaven (Plainsong) I wish I had the guts to try to get my congregation to sing some Plainsong chant; it's easier to get a small group to do it though. This version has the modern translation.
Online resource Our Father above us and all around us (McLaren) Brian McLaren's simple way of chanting the Lord's prayer; I'm not actually sure that I like this. Video.
VU959 / GC(II)7 Our Father in Heaven (Lord's Prayer) (Haas) A simple and slightly schmaltzy arrangement of the more modern translation. Sound sample.
*URW455 Holy one our only home, hallowed be your name (Mission) An excellent inclusive verson of the Lord's Prayer by a Native American woman. The tune and words are really beautiful.
*TiS 465 / AHB 399 / Iona (SBL) / CH116 Our God in heaven / Father in heaven / Loving Creator grant to your children (Niles) I really like this hymn, especially the Philippino folk melody to which its set. Newer versions of the hymn from the Christian Conference of Asia have altered the lyrics to "Our God in heaven, Creator God" in the first verse. Other versions, such as CH4 have "Loving Creator, Parent and God"
Source Unknown Indwelling God infused throughout all existence (Fred F Keip) This is a rewritten Lord's prayer. It's a bit wordy, but quite helpful in reframing the Lord's Prayer with less baggage. Ed Murray who is part of the Singing the Lectionary Facebook group has written a good plainsong-like tune for this.
Music by Heart 85 Our Father in heaven (Dole) A simple call and response arrangement of the more modern translation of the Lord's Prayer. Needs a confident, and well rehearsed leader!
*ATFG574 You are our Father you live in heaven (Warmun and Tiwi communities) Australian Aboriginal version of the Lord's Prayer.
TiS 526 / AHB 451 / CP(E) 505 Lord Jesus Christ you have come to us (Appleford) The second verse is particularly appropriate. I haven't sung this for ages; not sure why. Lyrics.
*TiS 745 / AoV1-048 / ATN 34 / SiS96 / CH641 / UMH405 / VU356 / WoV783 / GA456 / HPP370 / PH333 / GC615 / GC(II)600 / CP458 / W&R349 / Cha354 / Srce593 / 82Hml-711 Seek ye first the kingdom of God (Lafferty) A classic. Versions vary widely in the inclusiveness of their versions. A tip: GA, WoV and VU have all made this gender inclusive for God by simply replacing "his righteousness" with "God's righteousness". And "We do not live by bread alone". Words from Theresa of Avila.
