Songs, Hymns, Music for Proper 14B / Ordinary 19B / Pentecost +11 (August 12 2012)

2 Samuel 18:5-9, 15, 31-33
The death of Absalom and David's grief
Funeral song suggestions here may be helpful.

*TiS 647 / AoV2-012 / ATN 25 Comfort, comfort all my people (Mann) Easy to sing, beautiful lyrics. Chorus is “Comfort, comfort all my people, with the comfort of my word. Speak ye tender to my people, all your sins are taken away”. Lyrics, mp3 sample.
*TiS 682 / ATW 490 / GA236 / AA151 When human voices cannot sing (Murray) Lovely words of healing in the face of grief. I prefer this sung to ST COLUMBA, which is the tune in GA and TiS. Lyrics (loads a word document)
The Sacred Harp 268 David's Lamentation One of our Sacred Harp group's favourite songs. You can listen to a field recording here (turn it up LOUD). This is not a serious suggestion for your congregation, unless you can invite some singers to join your congregation for the day, but I think this song captures the depth of David's feelings. Lyrics are Lyrics.
Iona (Courage to say no / When grief is raw / Enemy of Apathy) / SP307  Sing my soul when hope is sleeping "Sing, my soul, when hope is sleeping. Sing when faith gives way to fears; Sing to melt the ice of sadness Making way for joy through tears." This is not so easy to sing, so will need to be sung by a soloist or small group the first time.

Psalm 130
Out of the depths I cry to you O Lord
*Iona (Sent By the Lord) / MV066 Senzenina? / What have we done? (South African) This beautiful chant from South Africa asks the question that we often ask when things go wrong beyond belief. It's important to know what the song means when singing it. If you have some part-singers in your congregation, this would be particular good. It's good to let people ask this question. It is also on the soundtrack for "The Power of One" so you could also play the recorded music if appropriate. Free sheet music (loads a pdf).
*TiS 683 / WoV735 / ELW603 / W&R416 God when human bonds are broken (Kaan) These words pick up an unusual theme, and fit really well with this reading. There are a couple of possible tunes, none of which are immediately familiar, but they are not difficult either.
*SFFS 2136 / NCH554 / GA227 / VU611 / G(II)636 / GC877 / Cha510 Out of the Depths O God we call to you (Duck) FENNVILLE A simple and honest hymn, which sings this Psalm from the perspective of a community trying to work out its faith together. Excellent words and the tune is quite straightforward. Lyrics and sheet music sample. Video with lyrics (click on "more info" near the Subscribe button for the lyrics).*
*Taize / CH276 / VU22 / ELW262 / GA283 / G(II)256 / GC332 / GC(II)340 / G(3)406 / CP094 / W&R166 / SP28 / URW396 / Lau88 Wait for the Lord (Berthier) Wait for the Lord whose day is near, wait for the lord, keep watch, take heart. A lovely simple Taize chant. Sheet music, translations and sound samples.
*AoVK-58 We wait in hope for the Lord (Ford) Simple a cappella round; also good for kids "We wait in hope for the Lord, God is our help and our shield. And so our hearts rejoice, for we trust in God's holy name". Good for kids.
G(3)143 With the Lord there is Mercy (Guimont) A simple refrain to a cantor- or reader-lead reading.
Cha762 From the depths I cry to you God listen hear my voice (Goodrich) Simple sung response, and responsive reading
*Linnea Good Out of the depths I cry (Bauman / Good) Simple refrain.
Online resource Out of the Depths (Harding) A simple four part arrangement which would be nice if you have a choir or quartet that could sing this. Available for purchase, and you can view a sample PDF here. Note that the sound sample is for a different song, so that's a bit confusing, really.
NCH472 / UMH474 / VU670 / R297 / ELW875 / HPP434 / HPSS404 / G(II)637 / GC874 / GC(II)847 / G(3)955 / CP509 / W&R500 / Cha628 Precious Lord take my hand A classic gospel song.
TiS 667 / G(II)415 / GC591 How shall I sing to God (Wren) The words are excellent, but neither the tune in TiS or Gather hymnals is straightforward because of the difficult meter; this might be a good song for your musicians to present to start teaching the congregation so they can remember it in more difficult times. All lyrics and sheet music sample of the Gather hymnal melody (HOPE) here.

The next 3 are all variations of the same Gelineau (cantored) Psalm, but with different responses. They are all pretty good, so I'm listing them all! There is just one change needed to make the Psalm inclusive (just change "his word" to "God's word" and it will be fine).
GA077 / GC128 Out of the depths / I place all my trust in you O God (Gelineau) The original response from Gelineau. Very simple. Words to the response are "I place all my trust in you O God, all my hope is in your saving word". Sound sample and sheet music here (search for "I place all my trust"). Note this one also has a (non-inclusve) Trinitarian formula at the end.
G(II)113 / GC127 / GC(II)71 / G(3)87 Out of the Depths / With the Lord There Is Mercy (Gelineau / Haugen) This response is also quite simple, but a slightly different emphasis. "With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption". Not all versions are inclusive Sound sample and sheet music.
*TiS 81 Out of the depths / With the Lord there is Mercy (Gelineau / Carroll) Simple response is "With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption". We have used this at Brunswick Uniting and it went quite well.

Alternative Hebrew Scripture  1 Kings 19:4-8
Elijah flees the threat of death; food provided by an angel;
*ATW 435 Like the woman of old / Wellsprings A favourite song in our congregation about going to the "Wellsprings of life"and finding Jesus there. Picks up themes of tiredness, broken hearts and weariness, but makes the point that it's worth the effort.
*ATW 474 You're like the sun that warms me / Bread of angels (Mann) This is a nice ballad, a favourite of many in our congregation. It may not be easy for a congregation without some introduction because the structure is a little tricky. Lyrics.
*Tune In Save us in the time of trial (Whelan) A song with a reflective almost-Taize-like chorus. We have sung this a couple of different ways, it's quite flexible. Lyrics, sound sample and songbook available.
MV118 Me alone (Jamaican traditional) A very simple repetitive call-and-response song. Could work well as a reflective song.
*Tune In: You in all our worries / All will finish well “In this world where injustice reigns, you are in the midst of pain”. Excellent words of reassurance in a difficult world. Sound sample, lyrics and songbook available here.
*GC(II)651 / Online Resource You must never give up / Sizo Bambelela (South African) An excellent song! Would be fun to get a few singers together to sing the parts to this, though maybe not as many times through as in the sound sample. Free sheet music. Sound sampleGood for kids.
SP&P210 There's bread for the journey (Strathdee) Simple song; good for kids.
*MV 202 Bread for the Journey / Pain pour la route (Harding) A simple chant for the distribution of communion.
*AoV2-033 / VU648 Travel on travel on (Sydney Carter). I think this old folk song would work well to pick up the theme of persistence. Lyrics and chords here.

Psalm for the 1 Kings reading Psalm 34:1-8
I will bless the Lord at all times; this reading doesn't go on to the "taste and see" part of the Psalm.
*AoVK-24 / Iona (T1AU) / CH756 Bless the Lord (Kenyan) Simple and fun Kenyan call and response. "Bless the Lord there is no other God" Kids would really enjoy this, and with some African drumming, it would really be excellent. The tune is identical to Reamo Leboga. Sound sample of Reamo leboga (scroll to the 3rd album). Good for kids.
*Taize / AoV2-142 / SFFS 2013 / PH224 / GC(II)576 / G(3)620 / CP360 / SP194 / Src79 / URW377 / Lau813  Bless the Lord my soul (Berthier) A beautiful and very well known Taize chant. Sound samples, sheet music. Good for kids.
Iona / CH788 / MV104 Know that God is Good / Mungu ni mwema (Traditional Congo) This traditional African refrain is just lots of fun and very simple to sing. Good for kids and adults! Sound sample (a bit "white", but it gives you an idea).
G(II)44 / GC46 I Will Bless the Lord (Gouin) A nice contemporary cantored Psalm with inclusive lyrics. Sound sample. Sheet music.
*TiS 73 / Taize / CH77 / GA418 / G(II)364 / GC526 / GC(II)528 / G(3)623 / CP313 / Srce614 /  URW384 / Lau698 Laudate Dominum / Sing Praise And Bless The Lord (Berthier) One of the more jolly Taize chants. I prefer it in Latin, but for kids, this one is quite good fun in English. Good for kids. Sound sample and parts for learning.
*Taize / TiS 739 / AoV2-041 / ATOK 404 / VU290 / GA269 / SFFS 2054 / G(II)451 / GC639 / GC(II)626 / G(3)733 / CP568 / W&R421 / URW388 Nothing Can Trouble / Nada te turbe (Berthier) Excellent and quite well known Taize chant. Spanish lyrics are not too hard for non-Spanish speakers. Sheet music, sound samples, lyrics and translations.

Ephesians 4:25-5:2
Some good solid advice on living well as God's people
Sacred Harp 178 Africa (Billings) You know, if you do happen to have some Sacred Harp Singers in your congregation, who sang "David's Lamentation", you could also ask them to sing Africa. You can listen to it here. Lyrics are here.
*ATFG561 / Tune In: Part of a fam'ly interconnected / Community (Brown) A song about being welcomed and how to work together as part of a community. "Part of a family interconnected, this is community; Welcoming strangers, visiting neighbours, this gives us dignity". Very singable song about building community. Works well for kids as well. A big favourite at Brunswick Uniting. Good for kids.  Sound sample, lyrics and songbook.
*Tune In: Kingdom Come: A song about God’s kingdom. Lots of words and good images. Sound sample and lyrics here. “But this community’s where God reigns. The kingdom’s in you, the kingdom’s in me. The kingdoms among us, it’s not yet to be”.
*VU457 / R183 / ELW522 / SFFS 2268 / HPP528 / GC(II)738 / CP061 / W&R695 As We Gather at Your Table (Daw) Beautiful, honest, encouraging words. Could be sung to HOLY MANNA, BEACH SPRING or NETTLETON, all very popular hymn tunes (did I mention that two of them are Sacred Harp tunes?), particularly good if you are celebrating communion this week. Lyrics.
*TiS 417 / AoV2-133 / ATW 448 / VU387 / StJ / WoV683 / ELW397 / AA94 / HPP237 / HPPS323 / URW203 Loving Spirit, Loving Spirit (Murray). There are about a zillion tunes set for this. I prefer FELICITY (by Colin Gibson TiS 417), but also like RESTORATION. Lyrics are here.
*TiS 411 / AHB 328 / NCH266 / UMH537 / VU194 / LBW160 / CP658 / CP(E) 425 / W&R331 Filled with the Spirit's power (Peacey) A rollicking hymn; a classic and the lyrics are still good to sing today. I prefer the tune WOODLANDS for this hymn.
*TiS 674 / Iona (Common Ground, Heaven Shall Not Wait) / CH253 Inspired by love and anger Powerful lyrics, simple English folk tune. Lyrics (search for "inspired").
*ATOK 390 Put on love every day, never hide your love away (Walker) A fun song for kids!  Good for kids.

John 6:35, 41-51
More about Jesus being the bread of life. Note that many of these songs will be suggested again next week because John just keeps going on about the bread of life. This means that you could introduce a new song this week, and sing it with more confidence next week when you repeat it!
*New Brunswick UC songs In Spirit we rise (Anderson) It would be great to sing this song about God's spirit working in and through us. "In Spirit we rise, rise, rise, to be bread for the world". Sorry, this isn't available yet online or in a songbook. I think it would be good to do this at BUC for the next couple of weeks.
*TiS 541 / CH674 / WoV722 / ELW535 / G(II)394 / GC562 / GC(II)529 / CP082 Hallelujah we sing your praises / Haleluyah! Pelo Tsa Rona. Joyous and simple song; "Christ the Lord to us said "I am wine I am bread" ". Good for kids.
*TiS 714 / AoV1-125 /ATE 270 / CH661 / UMH628 / VU466 / WoV709 / ELW472 / GA205 / G(II)588 / GC838 / GC(II)806 / RS928 / CP063 / W&R697 / Cha414 Eat this bread drink this cup (Batastini / Taize) Excellent, particularly if you have a capable cantor. Some resources say "Come to him and never be hungry", but other have "come to me / trust in me".
*ATW 474 You're like the sun that warms me / Bread of angels (Mann) This is a nice ballad, a favourite of many in our congregation. It may not be easy for a congregation without some introduction because the structure is a little tricky. Lyrics.
*TiS 569 / AHB 478 / NCH18/19 / CH167 / UMH127 / VU651 / LBW343 ELW618 / HPP432 / HPSS281 / CP565 / CP(E) 455 / W&R501 / Cha622 / 82Hml690 Guide me O thou great Jehovah / Redeemer (Williams) A rousing hymn of God’s presence and strength and making it to the other side. "Bread of heaven, feed me now and evermore." Sound sample and lyrics.
*TiS474 / AoV1-012 / ATE 295 / CH623 / SFFS 2236 / HPP553 / G(II)539 / GC839 / GC(II)743 / G(3)848  / CP465 / W&R649 / Cha284 / SP175 / URW054 / Lau475 Here in this place new light is streaming / Gather us in (Haugen). Excellent words, very well known. “Nourish us well and teach us to fashion lives that are holy and hearts that are true”. Lyrics and sound sample.
*TiS 535 / AoV1-049 / GA204 / G(II)597 / GC828 / GC(II)822 / G(3)945 I Am The Bread Of Life, you who come to me shall not hunger Different sources are very variable in how inclusive it is (earlier versions have "he who comes to me shall not hunger"), so check out your own source. Newer sources also have "And I will raise you up" rather than "I will raise him up". Spanish language sound sample. Lyrics and sheet music sample.
*TiS 239 / AHB 185 / ATE 236 / NCH48 / Lau746 Jesus the Christ said "I am the bread" / Jesus the Lord said "I am the bread" (Urdu) Good for kids and non-readers as it is very repetitive.
TiS 539 / CH671 / UMH629 / VU478 / WoV711 / ELW484 / GA191 / HPP531 / HPSS521 / GC815 / GC(II)816 / W&R705 / Cha429 You satisfy the hungry heart BICENTENNIAL This is quite nice, although I don't know it well. Sources vary in which verses they use, so feel free to pick and choose. You may prefer to use a soloist for the verses when you bring this to your congregation for the first time. Lyrics, music and quite nice sound sample here.
FFS03 As we Walk along beside you (Murray) Excellent words or recognising Christ in the word, the bread, the resurrection. A simple tune.
*AoVNG15 Bread of Life (Poirier) A nice gentle song. Would be good for distribution of communion. This was sung by the musicians on Maundy Thursday, and it would be good to sing it again.
*TiS 538 / AoV2-093 Feed us now Bread of life (Mann) One of my favourite communion songs. Simple to sing, and beautiful simple theology. “Piece of bread, cup of wine, Lord this food is good”. Lyrics (search for "feed us now"). Good for kids. I love how the liturgy in the link intersperses the words of institution with the singing of the song. I think it's so great that there are so many orders of worship on the Internet!
ATW 473 Bread for the world a world of hunger (Farrell) Very nice words. Tune a bit schmaltzy, but the words save it. A bit gutsy really. Good for a soloist during distribution of communion. MV197 Bread of life broken and shared (Gagnon) Quite nice verses and catchy chorus, which refers to this, and other famous bread-like readings. For communion.
AoV1-027 / AoVK-102 / GA200 / G(II)613 / GC847 / GC(II)807 / G(3)924 / Lau473 We come to share our story / Song of the Body of Christ (Haas) Simple tune and good words "We come to share our story, we come to break the bread, we come to know our rising From the dead". Sung to a traditional Hawai'ian tune.

Songs, Hymns, Music for Proper 13B / Ordinary 18B / Pentecost +10 (August 5 2012)

2 Samuel 11:26 - 12:13a
Nathan confronts David about his greed. David confesses.
See suggestions for Psalm 51 below also.

*Tune In / NCYC '07: Forgive us now (Brown) This is one of the best songs seeking forgiveness that I know. Lyrics, sound sample, and songbook. "Forgive us now, O mother love for all the idols we have built, For all the time we’ve worshiped there in company of dark despair. Forgive us mother of all hope”.
FFS19 For the hurt I create (Murray) Beautiful tunes (there are two) and words. Tune (ii) is most simple, so use that if you will sing it as a congregation, but tune (i) is also worth using if you have some good musicians who can sing it for your congregation. If using tune (ii) you may like to suggest to your congregation that they simply join in on the "forgive me, Lord, forgive" line, but make sure you teach it to them first, because the third one is different to the other three. "For the hurt that I create.... for the evil I condone... for works of peace I do not do... for hope and help that I refuse... forgive me Lord, forgive"
FFS20 Forgive forgive us Holy God (Murray / Gibson) Very easy tune for a congregation to sing (and there are 5 verses to learn it in!). The words focus on our desensitisation to violence and our greed, so a nice fit for this week's reading. The final verse has a focus on communion, but still makes sense if you are not celebrating the eucharist this week. Lyrics and a different tune (which is also very lovely indeed) can be found here.
*TiS 693 / AoV1-031 / GA212 Come as you are that's how I want you (Browne) This song is beautiful, gentle, simple, and very well known. Lyrics (search for "come as you are"). Slow and mushy sound sample. A good song to start the service.
Taize God is forgiveness / Bóg jest miłością "God is forgiveness, dare to forgive and God will be with you. God is forgiveness, love and do not fear". This simple chant will be good if you choose to focus on the theme of forgiveness. Lyrics (in many languages), music and sound samples here
You might like to sing a Kyrie

Psalm 51:1-12
A Prayer for forgiveness and a new heart
See also the suggestions for the 2 Samuel reading (above); You might like to sing a Kyrie.
*Tune In / NCYC '07: Forgive us now (Brown) This is one of the best songs seeking forgiveness that I know. Lyrics, sound sample, and songbook.
GA041 / G(II)53 / GC56 / GC(II)41 / G(3)51 Be Merciful O Lord (Haugen) Good refrain which could be used with or without the cantor part. Sound sample, sheet music sample and lyrics (search for "Merciful").
AoV1-034 Create in me O Lord a heart that is pure / I'll Sing Your Song (Marshall) Good honest song. Simple to sing.
*TiS 712 / AoV2-021 / ATE 269 / The tide has turned songbook Create in me a clean heart O God (Hannah) Good. A big favourite in our congregation. We're sang this every week of Lent this year.
*AoV1-158 / GA438 Create a new heart Holy Lord / A new heart for a new world (O'Brien/Watts) Very simple melody, excellent words "Create a new heart Holy Lord, beckon our lives through your word, open our eyes to your call, United as one for your world".
GA040 Create in Me a Clean Heart O God (O'Brien) Nice refrain and simple cantor part for this Psalm.
Cha743 Create in me a clean heart O God (Mueller) Very simple refrain and responsive reading. SFFS 2134 Forgive Us Lord / Perdon Senor (Lockward / Martinez) Call and response prayer of confession.
NCH784 Create in Me a clean heart (Diemer) Easy to sing. Nice words.
Online Resource Create in Me a pure Heart O God (Harding) A nice round, with an optional descant part.  Good for kids. Sample sheet music Purchase here (note that the sound sample is for a different song).
TiS 31 / HPSS195 / CP257 Have mercy on us living Lord (Hopson) Solid inclusive words (if you replace "Lord" with "God") and a simple hymn tune (PTOMEY)
Iona (Love and Anger) / StS067 Have mercy on us Lord / Khudaya rahem kar (Pakistan) A nice alternative. It would be nice to get your congregation to sing something from South Asia. Also works well in English. Sound sample
ATOK 399 Holding out your hand (Holmes) I like this one. Good for kids.
GC(II)409 Lord Jesus Christ son of the living God (Browning) A simple chant based on "The Jesus Prayer" with a beautiful (and optional) cantor which is really worth using. Nice sound sample and sheet music sample Sound sample  Lyrics and melody line.
*Worldmaking.net O Tender God, Have Mercy A gentle, modern version of the Kyrie. Sound sample, lyrics and theology here.
*TiS 729 / Iona (HSNW) Jesus Christ, Son of God have mercy upon us A very very simple call and response chant.
Psalm Project Wash Me Clean A nice, gentle reworking of the Psalm. Might be good to ask a musician to sing this one. Lyrics, theology and sound sample here.
*? TiS 744 Refresh my heart Lord (Bullock) I'm surprised at myself for suggesting this song, but I think it could work very well, especially if played in a laid back sort of way. Lyrics and chords.
Linnea Good Ah then these shattered broken bones (Good) Simple song; best if you have enough singers to cover all the parts.

Alternative Hebrew Scripture: Exodus 16:2-4, 9-15
The Israelites complain; God sends manna and quails. Enough to eat without hoarding.
*Recorded music Then the quail came (Blanchard) I love this song, and the words really bring the story of the quail and manna to tired travellers. Written by Michael Kelly Blanchard and recorded by Noel Paul Stookey (the Paul in Peter, Paul and Mary). I like the recording by Australian folk singer Peter Campbell about 13 years ago on his album “Rear View Mirror”. I'm not sure if this album is still available anywhere - track it down if you can! I think songs like this are really worth playing at church, with the lyrics projected or printed for people in the congregation to read while they listen. Lyrics. Sound sample (and check out the 70s album cover!)
*ATW 474 You're like the sun that warms me / Bread of angels (Mann) This is a nice ballad, a favourite of many in our congregation. It may not be easy for a congregation without some introduction because the structure is a little tricky. Lyrics.
*Online Resource
Manna for all (Bruce Harding). A simple chant “God of abundance, call us to action, trusting your promise, manna for all!”. Sample available, and option to purchase Sample and online purchase

TiS 569 / AHB 478 / NCH18/19 / CH167 / UMH127 / VU651 / LBW343 ELW618 / HPP432 / HPSS281 / CP565 / CP(E) 455 / W&R501 / Cha622 / 82Hml690 Guide me O thou great Jehovah / Redeemer (Williams) A rousing hymn of God’s presence and strength and making it to the other side. Sound sample and lyrics.
VU460 / R181 / ELW461 / *SFFS 2126 / G(II)589 / GC820 / GC(II)817 / RS 845 / Cha419 All who hunger gather gladly (Dunstan) The words are great; I would sing it to the tune HOLY MANNA. There is a contemporary tune (by Bob Moore) is also very nice, but may need to be introduced to your congregation. “All who hunger gather gladly, holy manna is our bread. Come from wilderness and wand’ring, here, in truth, we will be fed. You that yearn for days of fullness, all around us is our food. Taste and see the grace eternal, Taste and see that God is good”. Lyrics (scroll down).
GC840 / GC(II)818 / CP085 / 82Hml-343 Shepherd of Souls. An old-fashioned inclusive eucharistic hymn to a familiar tune. Lyrics, sheet music and sound sample here.
*TiS 156 / AHB 91 / AoV1-135 / ATA 123 / CH212 / UMH145 / VU409 / ELW556 / HPP267 / HPSS469 / G(II)546 / GC756 / GC(II)748 / CP003 / CP(E) 260 / W&R35 / Cha053 / URW186 / 82Hml-008 Morning has broken (BUNESSAN) Still good.

Psalm for the Exodus reading: Psalm 78:23-29
TiS 41 / United Methodist Psalter We shall listen, Lord, to your teaching (Kimbrough). A fairly formal cantor and response Psalm. It requires a confident leader as the response is not completely intuitive. The verses can be read or sung by a leader.
*TiS 182 / AoV2-010 / VU268 / SFFS 2047 / HPP13 Bring many names This is a beautiful song, but it's very long. Try singing one verse unison, then one women, one men, then all together again, to keep people interested in what they are singing. Lyrics can be found here.
*Emergent Psalter Give your ears my people to the lessons of the past (Everett) A good, slightly solemn Psalm refrain. Sheet music (refrain only).

Ephesians 4:1-16
Unity, spiritual growth and a million other things
*TiS 640 / AHB 561 / ATE 310 / NCH498 / UMH432 / VU593 / WoV765 / ELW708 / HPP446 / HPSS367 / G(II)296 / GC409 / GC(II)429 / G(3)505 / CP504 / W&R273 / Cha600 / URW116 / 82Hml-602 Jesu Jesu fill us with your love / Kneels at the feet of his friends (Colvin & people of Ghana) Lyrics. Good for kids
GC(II)667 / G(3)770 One Lord (True) Lovely words and relaxing ballad-like tune. "One Lord, one faith, one call to serve each other. One heart, one mind, one common ground; we stand as one". Sound sample. Lyrics and sheet music sample.
*AoV1-129 / CH665 / UMH62o / VU467 / ELW701 / HPP525 / G(II)599 / GC830 / GC(II)813 / CP073 / W&R689 / Cha393 / Lau832 One bread, one body. A classic. Don't play it too slow or it takes forever!! Particularly appropriate if you are celebrating communion.
AoVK-148 / ATOK 388 There is one body (Watts/O'Brien) A good energetic song of unity. Good for kids.
AoV2-148 There Is One Lord (Alstott) Beautiful refrain and verses are okay too.
GA346 / G(II)581 / GC809 / GC(II)796 / G(3)905 There Is One Lord, one faith, one baptism (Berthier) A simple chant, works well with or without the cantor. Sound sample. Lyrics and sheet music sample.
AoV1-130 / NCH444 / SFFS 2223 / HPP495 / G(II)533 / GC735 / GC(II)728 / G(3)835 / W&R595 / Cha494 We are one in the Spirit / They’ll know we are Christians by our love (Scholtes) A classic 60's song of unity and being an example to others. It's still pretty groovy, I reckon. We often syncopate it a bit at Brunswick. Lyrics and chords here. Good for kids.
MV141 We are all one people (Naytowhow) This Native American song really gets stuck in my head. I think it's really good. Might take some work to get your congregation going with it, though.
AoVK-21 Weave one heart (Haugen) Excellent song, with call and response verses "many colours woven into one"
*TiS 477 / Iona (LFB, Common Ground) / CH510 / StJ Jesus calls us here to meet him (Bell) Good words and a rollicking or gentle Scottish tune LEWIS FOLK MELODY (depending on how you play it!). Lyrics. 4th verse (not in TiS, but in Iona sources) leads to communion. Tune PDF and sound samples.
SFFS 2260 / G(II)585 / GC816 / GC(II)808 / G(3)946 Let Us Be Bread blessed by the Lord (Porter) Simple chant, with an optional cantor part. Sound sample. Lyrics and sheet music sample.
*VU457 / R183 / ELW522 / SFFS 2268 / HPP528 / GC(II)738 / CP061 / W&R695 As We Gather at Your Table (Daw) Beautiful, honest, encouraging words. Could be sung to HOLY MANNA, BEACH SPRING or NETTLETON, all very popular hymn tunes. Particularly good if you are celebrating communion this week. Lyrics
*TiS 398 / AHB 310 / AoV1-118 / NCH289 / CH489 / UMH475 / VU367 / GA375 / LBW508 / ELW804 / HPSS313 / GC465 / GC(II)471 / RS617 / CP645 / CP(E) 175 / W&R330 / Cha582 / Srce100 Come down O Love divine (Down Ampney/Vaughan Williams) Old fashioned, but still inclusive and very well known. Words and tune. Hymnals vary a lot in the lyrics with respect to thees and thys and words like "vesture".
*TiS 494 / W&R678 / Cha375 In water we grow (Wren) Great words, especially if you have a baptism this week. Tune is quite straightforward. Lyrics here (loads a pdf).

John 6:24-35
I am the bread of life; Note that we'll be following this bread theme for a couple of weeks, so this might be a good time to introduce a new song to your congregation and repeat it a few times over the next couple of weeks (or refamiliarise yourselves with an old favourite).
Some Communion Songs also have a focus on Bread.

Songs, Hymns, Music for Proper 12B / Ordinary 17B / Pentecost 8 (July 29 2012)

2 Samuel 11:1-15
David lays with Bathsheba, she gets pregnant, David plots Uriah's death.
Note that this theme keeps on going next week, so this might be a good opportunity to introduce a new song, and sing it again next week.

Psalm 14
Doesn't anyone around here believe in what is true?
*Emergent Psalter Fools say in their heart "There is no God" (Everett) An excellent, modern refrain which is very singable, and can be sung with a second refrain over the top from Psalm 53. Podcast on this Psalm, including sound sample. Sheet music (refrain only).*VU735 Dear God who loves all humankind (Parry) Simple familiar refrain. It's the first line of the old hymn "Dear Lord and Father of Mankind" with a responsive Psalm setting. This would be a nice way to do the Psalm this week.
GC(II)660 / G(3)750 Deliver Us O Lord of Truth (Steumpfle) Very challenging words to a good well known American folk tune (LAND OF REST - TiS 324). "Deliver us, O Lord of Truth, from speech unbacked by deed, from lives that by their faithlessness deny our spoken creed" (don't worry, it gets more positive in the later verses). Lyrics and sheet music sample. Sound sample.
*TiS 469 This is the truth we hold (Bridge) This is a new one for me. It has very positive words about Christ as our truth through the ages. The tune is also new, but is not difficult, especially if you play it through once before starting to sing this. "This is the truth we hold, source of the joy we share, hope that can make us bold, trusting the name we bear: that "Christ has died" and "Christ is risen, in Christ shall all be made alive".

Alternative Hebrew Scripture: 2 Kings 4:42-44
The man from Baal-Shalishah feeds many with little food.
*Tune In / NCYC 2009: God has laid a feasting table / Invitation (Whelan) Feminine imagery of God gathering her guests to a feasting table. Fun Cuban rhythm. Sound sample, lyrics and songbook
*ATW 475 Come to the banquet there’s a place for you (White) An excellent song by Melbourne singer and songwriter Faye White. Good for kids.
*AoV2-020 Come to the feast of Heaven and Earth / Table of Plenty (Schutte) “God will provide for all that you need, here at the table of plenty”. I love this song. It’s very straightforward and excellent words.

Psalm for the 2 Kings reading: Psalm 145:10-18
*TiS 100 / AHB 3 / NCH17 / CH147 / UMH62 / VU217 / LBW527 / ELW835 / GA395 / HPP261 / HPSS455 / GC534 / GC(II)523 / RS 670 / CP(E) / 250 / W&R23 / Cha022 All creatures of our God and King (Francis of Assissi) A good classic sing! Hymnals vary in how inclusive (or not) the lyrics are. Hymnals do this by using only "Alleluia Alleluia" or "Sing your praises", instead of the masculine "Oh praise him". NCH has "To you, O God, all creatures sing" and eliminates all kingly language. ELW has "All creatures worship God most high". Lyrics and sound sample.
*TiS 132 / AHB 65 / NCH277 / CH111 / UMH64 / VU315 / LBW165 / ELW413 / HPP243 / HPSS138 / G(II)332 / GC474 / GC(II)483 / CP001 / CP(E) 202 Holy Holy Holy Lord God Almighty (Heber / NICAEA) Many sources have good inclusive language for people and God (e.g. CH4 and TiS, but others don't so check your source!)
*TiS 152 / NCH4 / UMH89 / VU232 / LBW551 / ELW836 / HPP22 / HPSS464 / GC529 / GC(II)520 / CP425 / W&R59 / Cha002 / URW065 Joyful joyful we adore thee Note that this hymn is not always very inclusive. I prefer more modern translations (e.g. TiS, VU, NCH, GC(II) ). Older version lyrics and tune sample.
VU267 / W&R20 / SP288 / Lau897 Like a mighty river flowing (Perry) Lovely words of the presence of God in nature. Some of them are here.
*MV176 Three things I promise (Wren / Damon) Beautiful words of seeking to live faithfully from Brian Wren. The set tune is unfamiliar, but very beautiful, and if not familiar to your congregation would make a good reflective piece (for the congregation to sing in later weeks). You could also sing it to one of the suggested alternate tunes PROSPECT and WAREHAM if you like.
StJ / G(II)346 / GC506 / GC(II)508 You Are All We Have (O'Brien) A nice refrain and good cantor parts. Somewhat formal. Sound sample, sheet music sample and a different sound sample.

Ephesians 3:14-21
Prayer for strength and the knowledge and indwelling of Christ and God's fullness
*Worldmaking.net God of My Breathing (Bruxvoort-Colligan). Excellent words to a well-known hymn tune (SLANE).  "God of my breathing and God of my heart, Spirit embodied in all human parts, Would that this body, from head to the toes, Bring forth Your glory in all that I know". Sample and lyrics.
TiS 443 / AHB 357 / CP(E) 291 Come dearest Lord descend and dwell (Watts) Old fashioned, yet almost completely inclusive lyrics (change the "his" to God's in the third verse to make it fully gender-inclusive). Sung to the very familiar tune TALLIS CANON. Lyrics here. Tune here.
*TiS 548 / VU629 / HPSS340 / CP(E) 415 / W&R418 Eternal light shine in my heart I really love this beautiful inclusive and ancient prayer. It is not familiar, but would be beautiful sung by a soloist until your congregation grows to know it.
*Taize / MV075 / StS079 / SFFS 2118 / GC(II)479 / SP99 / URW395 Holy Spirit, Come to Us (tui amoris ignem) a joyful chant, no cantor required. Music and translations While listed here in Latin, it also sounds very beautiful in English.
TiS 478 / AHB 454 / CH639 / VU317 / LBW188 / ELW450 / CP436 / CP(E) 203 I bind unto myself today Hey, you know some people in my congregation actively hate this hymn and some people love it better than any other. I love some verses and hate others... Either way, it fits the reading well - you decide! Lyrics and tune here.
TiS 542 Far beyond our mind's grasp (Feliciano). These beautiful devotional words are sung to a traditional Filipino tune. The tune is not easy, but is very haunting once you get to know it. If it is new to your congregation, it would be good to ask a soloist to sing it.
MV119 God our protector (Bell) Simple chant "God our protector, keep us in mind, always give strength to your people. For if we could be with you one day in time it is better than a thousand without you" Could be used  on its own with or without an instrumental bridge.
*Worldmaking.net / CP086 / SP&P More Than We Can Ask A great chant for use during intercessions. Very simple and genuine. Good for kids. Sound sample and lyrics.

John 6:1-21
Suddenly we've switched to John for the feeding of the 5000 and Jesus walks on water.
*Tune In: Hail the fisherfolk (Brown) A bluesy litany of the saints, including the fishermen of yesterday and the fisherfolk of today. This song celebrates the many people who have followed God’s call through the ages. Lyrics, sound sample and songbook.
*Tune In / NCYC 2009: God has laid a feasting table / Invitation (Whelan) Feminine imagery of God gathering her guests to a feasting table. Fun Cuban rhythm. Lyrics, sound sample, songbook.
*TiS 537 / ATE 297 / NCH347 / CH673 / VU468 / StS123 / WoV754 / ELW674 / HPP536 / HPPS514 / PH514 / W&R698 / Cha422 / ZSS206 / URW096 Let us talents and tongues employ Great for kids, excellent Jamaican rhythm which you can have a lot of fun with. It's also very adaptable and works well with any instruments. “Loaves abound!”. lyrics and slighty tacky midi sample here
*TiS 179 / NCH273 / VU312 / GA379 / StJ / URW073 Praise with Joy the World's Creator One of my favourite hymns - strongly Trinitarian lyrics and excellent imagery. I particularly love the “One God in community” phrase. Some versions change "Son" to "Christ" to make it more inclusive. Lyrics (scroll down). "Praise the Christ who feeds the hungry"
Web resource “Where is bread?” the great crowd murmured. This hymn from Carolyn Winfrey Gillette to ABBOTS LEIGH (a good familiar tune) focusses on the issue of hunger then and now. Strong social jutice vision. "Where is bread?" the call is rising; Millions cry who must be fed. God, your answer seems surprising: "You, my Church, you give them bread."Words and music available here.
*AHB 565 Feed us now O Son of God (Peter John Douglas Allan) I like this old 1970s folky song. I don’t know why it didn’t make it into TiS. One of my childhood favourites. I think kids still like it, too.
*TiS 538 / AoV2-093 Feed us now Bread of life (Mann) One of my favourite communion songs. Simple to sing, and beautiful simple theology. “Piece of bread, cup of wine, Lord this food is good”. Lyrics (search for "feed us now"). I love how the liturgy in the link intersperses the words of institution with the singing of the song. I think it's so great that there are so many orders of worship on the Internet!
*TiS474 / AoV1-012 / ATE 295 / CH623 / SFFS 2236 / HPP553 / G(II)539 / GC839 / GC(II)743 / CP465 / W&R649 / Cha284 / SP175 / URW054 Here in this place new light is streaming / Gather us in (Haugen). Excellent words, very well known. “Nourish us well and teach us to fashion lives that are holy and hearts that are true”. Lyrics and sound sample.

UMH434 / VU702 / StJ / R249 / ELW725 / HPSS407 / W&R624 / Cha662 Cuando el Pobre / When a poor one / When the Poor Ones. The words to this are just wonderful liberation theology. Lyrics here.
*TiS 511 / AHB 433 / AoV2-098 / NCH330 / UMH618 / VU480 / LBW212 / ELW471 / HPP524 / HPPS513 / GC832 / GC(II)832 Let us break bread together. Good for kids and those who cannot read as it is quite repetitive. Note that the lyrics vary widely in different resources. Use whatever is most appropriate for your congregation.
*TiS 544 / Iona Since the world was young / God's Table I love the simplicity of the words in this song, it's easy to sing and chorus is so joyous. It frustrates me that it has such a masculine God, particularly since the imagery of God having a table and preparing a feast is drawn from the few places in the Scriptures where we actually have feminine images of God.... I wasn't sure whether to list this, but Jean mentioned it, and really, it is a terrific song!
Recorded music Five loaves and two fishes (Corinne May) I've listened to a few samples of this song, and it might work well played to your congregation, although it gets a bit schmaltzy for my taste. She has a beautiful voice! Lyrics are here, and you can listen to the whole song at YouTube and/or download the song from iTunes.

Songs, Hymns, Music for Proper 11B / Pentecost 8 / Ordinary 16B (22 July 2012)

2 Samuel 7:1-14a
David’s house and God’s house
See also the suggestions for Psalm 89 (just below)
*CH198 / MV001 / HPP550 / GC753 / GC(II)741 / G(3)850 / SP176 / URW058/ Lau458 Let Us Build a House / All are welcome (Haugen / TWO OAKS) This song has wonderful lyrics of hope for what a Christian community can be like, and a chorus that joyfully says “All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place”. Sheet music sample. Sound sample.
New Brunswick UCA Songs Take this space (Brown / Lees / McKinnon) This song was written for the opening of our updated church space and it would be good to sing it again this week.
*ATW 487 Make your home in me A simple beautiful invitation. Written by Melbourne songwriter and teacher, Fay White. “If you fly to the point of the day’s sunrise or westward across the sea, if you travel to the uttermost ends of the earth, there I will be; Make your home in me as I make my home in you. I am everywhere that you can be. Make your home in me”. I can't find a sample of this one, unfortunately.
Psalm 89:20-37
God's faithfulness to David
*TiS 46 / AoV2-96 / GA 518 My peace be upon you for ever / I will sing forever of your love, O Lord (Willcock) A very nice paraphrase of the psalm. The refrain is very simple and inclusive and can be used for either a read or cantor-sung Psalm. “My peace be upon you forever, my love be within your heart, my Spirit will keep you safe all your days”. This is also in New Song in an Ancient Land Vol 1 (in the Liturgy Library at BUC).
NCH29 / Iona (SBL) / GC538 / G(II)385 Let heaven your wonders proclaim This simple folk tune style tune has good, inclusive words. NCH and Iona books have a lovely arrangement for the verses, but it can also be sung in unison; especially nice with guitar if you have a guitarist in your congregation.
*AoVK-144 / ATN 87 When the day has begun / Walkin’ down the road (Mann) Great song for kids about God being with us. It's an oldy, and was overdone in my parish at least in the early 80s, but I think I can cope with it again now! Lyrics. Good for kids.
*Emergent Psalter Blessed be God forever Amen and amen (Everett) An excellent simple refrain. Sheet music (refrain only).
MV147 God help us to treasure (Oldham) I like this, but I can't tell you why because I'm in Abu Dhabi airport.
*ATE 216 / Iona (SBL) / CH126 / StJ / WoV795 / ELW555 / PH472 / G(II)365 / GC527 / RS 671 / CP417 / W&R15 O sing to the Lord / Cantai ao Senhor / Cantad al Señor (Traditional Brazilian) A good, fun and simple song that is easy to learn in Portuguese or Spanish too. Some versions also have multiple verses (e.g. CH). Sheet music sample. Sound sample (click on the play button).
*TiS 666 / AoV2-113 / AoVK-126 / ATOK 409 / NCH526 / Iona (Common Ground, Freedom is Coming) / CH516 / VU646/647 / WoV650 / ELW866 / SFFS 2235 / HPP153 / G(II)357 / GC513 / GC(II)516 / Cha442 / SP235 / Srce737 We are marching in the light of God / Siyahamba / Caminando. A very well known South African protest song. Good for kids. Lyrics (multiple translations).
Alternative Hebrew Scripture: Jeremiah 23:1-6
Bringing together the remnants of the flock; Looking forward to a world that is just
*TiS474 / AoV1-012 / ATE 295 / CH623 / SFFS 2236 / HPP553 / G(II)539 / GC839 / GC(II)743 / G(3)848  / CP465 / W&R649 / Cha284 / SP175 / URW054 / Lau475 Here in this place new light is streaming / Gather us in (Haugen). Excellent words, very well known. “Nourish us well and teach us to fashion lives that are holy and hearts that are true”. Lyrics and sound sample.
*MV007 Gather us in ground us in you (Hann) A simple chant which would be great for a quieter invitation to worship.
*AoV2-139 / GA525 / SP&P045 Gather us O God Body spirit soul and mind (Brown) Very simple song. Would work well as a gathering chant "Gather us O God, Body, spirit, soul and mind. Gather us, O God, One in union now with you"
AoV1-071 / GA530 / GC(II)742 / G(3)837 Gather Your People (Hurd) Excellent eucharistic theology. Sound sample. Lyric and sheet music sample.

Psalm for the Jeremiah reading Psalm 23
The Lord is my shepherd. Again.
*TiS 10 / AHB 16 / AoV1-144 / NCH479 / Iona (Common Ground) / CH14/16 / UMH136 / VU747/8 / StS099 / LBW451 / ELW778 / GA473 / HPP55 / HPSS170 / CP519 / CP(E) 594 / W&R86 / Cha0789 / Srce662 The Lord's my Shepherd I'll not want / God is my shepherd It's not inclusive, but I think it's more than a sentimental favourite. Good to sing to a different tune every now and then, e.g. Brother James' Air. NCH, VU and Chalice all have an inclusive language version. You know, we've only sung this twice at Brunswick in the last 5 years.
*MV126 Are you a shepherd? (Duck) Good and joyous. Lots of images of God: shepherd, teacher, mother, father. A catchy chorus. Good for kids.
*Tune In: Like the sun upon my skin / God’s Mercy A beautiful ballad about identifying God's mercy in the beauty of creation. Lyrics, sound sample and songbook available here.
*Tune In: The God that I know. A ballad drawing on God’s strength and comfort; not easy if unfamiliar. Lyrics and sample available here.
*NCYC2007 Lead me on (Gioia) A pretty cool gospel rock song from the NCYC before last.
*Recorded Music 23rd Psalm (Bobby McFerrin) A beautiful feminine rendering of the Psalm. From the album Medicine Man. Listen to it here on Youtube. Gave people some challenging images of God last year when we played it. If you'd like to sing it, it's also in the Unitarian Universalist book "Singing the Journey" and "Music for Liturgy" from St. Gregory of Nyssa.
*Recorded music I am your true shepherd (Meet me in the middle of the air) - Paul Kelly. A beautiful song mainly based on Psalm 23 except for that "middle of the air" bit. Listen to a nice a cappella rendition here. Lyrics. It's on Paul Kelly's 2005 album "Foggy Highway".
*ATN 84 / NCH490 / CH539 / UMH521 / LBW660 / WoV660 / ELW325 / HPP433 / HPSS363 / CP512 / W&R506 / Cha627 / ZSS69 / URW110 I want Jesus to walk with me An excellent simple song. There are also many good recordings of this song. A few years ago we listened to an Eric Bibb recording of this song (from his album Roadworks) during the distribution of communion. I think it worked very well.
TiS 233 / AHB 173 I will sing the wondrous story A good old fashioned sing (HYFRYDOL). Note that it uses masculine language for Christ, which may bother some. “I was lost but Jesus found me, found the sheep that went astray, raised me up and gently led me back into the narrow way”.
AoV1-033 / WoV690 / ELW423 / SFFS 2058 / G(II)29 / GC31 / GC(II)23 Shepherd Me O God (Haugen) A nice reworking of the 23rd Psalm. The chant could also be used on its own: “Shepherd me O God beyond my wants, beyond my fears, from death into life”. Sheet music, lyrics and a fairly unhelpful sound sample here.
G(II)458 / GC654 / GC(II)628 With a Shepherd's Care (Chepponis) Very nice words with feminine and masculine images for God. Would be very straightforward to sing. Painfully slow sound sample, lyrics and sheet music sample here.
*CH355 / VU210 / HPP81 / GC(II)525 / RS699 / CP630 You Lord Are Both Lamb and Shepherd (Dunstan) Beautiful words. Can be sung to many tunes. I like it to PICARDY or WESTMINSTER ABBEY. Sound sample, lyrics and sheet music sample here.

*CH716 / VU374 / FFS10 / SFFS 2128 / W&R477 / Cha575 Come and find the quiet centre (Murray) A good song for the beginning of worship. I would prefer to sing this to one of the more traditional melodies offered (Tune 1 in FFS) or BEACH SPRING (TiS 493).

*AoV1-091 / AoVK-68 / StS016 / G(II)527 / GC(II)720 / G(3)821 Peace before us peace behind us (Haas) love this one. Reflective. Careful not too get too schmaltzy because it's long. Less is more. It's good to do something while singing this song. Passing the peace slowly? I don't know... Schmaltzy and SLOW sound sample. Lead sheet. Good for kids.
TiS 778 / UMH666 / Cha436 Shalom to you (Eslinger) A simple song of peace to a traditional Spanish melody (SOMOS DEL SEÑOR).

Lyrics

"Together met, together bound by all that God has done, we'll go with joy, to give the world the love that makes us one". Lyrics and a very slow tune sample here.
*TiS 672 / GA554 Lord of earth and all creation (Thwaites) A call for renewal of creation and all God's created people in Australia. Two possible tunes. The newer tune is very good, but if your congregation can't do a new tune this week, it can also be sung to WESTMINSTER ABBEY which is very well known. Lyrics (split by words of mission and blessing).
*AoV1-129 / CH665 / UMH62o / VU467 / ELW701 / HPP525 / G(II)599 / GC830 / GC(II)813 One bread, one body. A classic. Don't play it too slow or it takes forever!! Particularly appropriate if you are celebrating communion.

Mark 6:30-34, 53-56
Jesus and the disciples go away and come back again. Stuff happens in the middle but we don't read about it. Rest.
*FFS28 God rest us (Michael Leunig/Gibson) I would love it if we could all teach this beautiful song to our congregations, so that they can call on it when they are tired. "God rest us. Rest that part of us which is tired. Awaken that part of us which is asleep. God awaken us, and awake within us. Amen". Perfect. Slow.
*AoV1-085 Like a child rests in its mother's arms ( Walker) A very beautiful and simple refrain; works well on its own. Good for kids
AoV2-049 My Soul Is At Rest (Watts) This is just completely beautiful. It is also on Trisha's album "Invokation".
TiS 33 / VU779 Rest in God alone (Batastini) A lovely simple and inclusive refrain that could be used on its own for this reading since it's actually a Psalm setting.
*Taize / CP563 In God alone my soul can find rest and peace / Mon Ame Se Repose (Berthier) A very beautiful chant from Taize. Sample music, and sound files to learn all the parts here. Good for kids
ATW 509 / CH435 You hear the lambs a-cryin' This old spiritual is quite haunting, and may not be familiar to your congregation. Might be nice to ask your musicians to sing it to them so they can learn it. To be honest, I'm never sure if I like this song in the context of a worship service, but maybe you do.
TiS 585 / AHB 500 / AoV1-054 / ATA 137 / NCH489 / CH540 / VU626 / LBW497 / ELW611 / GA468 / GC646 / GC(II)622 / G(3)724 / CP508 / CP(E) 469 / Srce280 / 82Hml-692 / Lau795 I heard the voice of Jesus say (Bonar) Hymnals vary a lot in their translations of this older hymn and in the tunes to which it is set.
*TiS 737 / Iona (Common Ground, HSNW, T1AU) Lord Jesus Christ lover of all (Bell) A beautiful chant. Can be used for intercessions. Note that some versions (T1AU at least) has a beautiful 4 part harmony arrangement with excellent moving parts in the lower registers.
