*TiS 638 / NCH175 / CH717 / UMH265 / LBW380 / ELW675 / PH380 / CP291 / CP(E) 346 / W&R638 / Cha503 / Lau430 O Christ the healer we have come Beautiful words and simple to sing. Good to sing during intercessions.  There are a lot of different tunes suggested for this hymn (INVERCARRY / KENTRIDGE), and they all seem pretty straightforward. If your congregation is really not at all confident with singing it can be sung to TALLIS' CANON. Lyrics.
Iona (Enemy of Apathy) / SP307  Sing my soul when hope is sleeping. "Sing, my soul, when hope is sleeping. Sing when faith gives way to fears; Sing to melt the ice of sadness Making way for joy through tears." Simple to sing.
*Iona (Heaven Shall not Wait) / VU19 / SP326 Kindle a flame to lighten the dark and take all fear away. A good chant to use if you will include candle lighting in the service. Sometimes a bit tricky to sing - there's a strangely large jump at the start.
*StS121 / FFS50 Nothing is lost on the breath of God (Colin Gibson). A beautiful song and very easy to sing even if new. "Nothing is lost on the breath of God, nothing is lost for ever; God's breath is love, and that love will remain, holding the world for ever. No feather too light, no hair too fine, no flower too brief in its glory; no drop in the ocean, no dust in the air, but is counted and told in God's story." Words and full sheet music. Sound sample.
*Seeds of Faith Do you know that I am your friend? / I’m Gonna Stick With You (Bruxvoort-Colligan) An excellent and fun song for kids. Lyrics, sound sample and songbook. Good for kids.

Psalm 130
Out of the depths I cry to you O Lord
*Iona (Sent By the Lord) / MV066 Senzenina? / What have we done? (South African) This beautiful chant from South Africa asks the question that we often ask when things go wrong beyond belief. It's important to know what the song means when singing it. If you have some part-singers in your congregation, this would be particular good. It's good to let people ask this question. It is also on the soundtrack for "The Power of One" so you could also play the recorded music if appropriate. Free sheet music (loads a pdf).
*TiS 683 / WoV735 / ELW603 / W&R416 God when human bonds are broken (Kaan) These words pick up an unusual theme, and fit really well with this reading. There are a couple of possible tunes, none of which are immediately familiar, but they are not difficult either.
*SFFS 2136 / NCH554 / GA227 / VU611 / G(II)636 / GC877 / Cha510 Out of the Depths O God we call to you (Duck) FENNVILLE A simple and honest hymn, which sings this Psalm from the perspective of a community trying to work out its faith together. Excellent words and the tune is quite straightforward. Lyrics and sheet music sample. Video with lyrics (click on "more info" near the Subscribe button for the lyrics).*
*Taize / CH276 / VU22 / ELW262 / GA283 / G(II)256 / GC332 / GC(II)340 / G(3)406 / CP094 / W&R166 / SP28 / URW396 / Lau88 Wait for the Lord (Berthier) Wait for the Lord whose day is near, wait for the lord, keep watch, take heart. A lovely simple Taize chant. Sheet music, translations and sound samples.
*AoVK-58 We wait in hope for the Lord (Ford) Simple a cappella round; also good for kids "We wait in hope for the Lord, God is our help and our shield. And so our hearts rejoice, for we trust in God's holy name". Good for kids.
Cha762 From the depths I cry to you God listen hear my voice (Goodrich) Simple sung response, and responsive reading *Linnea Good Out of the depths I cry (Bauman / Good) Simple refrain.
Online resource Out of the Depths (Harding) A simple four part arrangement which would be nice if you have a choir or quartet that could sing this. Available for purchase, and you can view a sample PDF here. Note that the sound sample is for a different song, so that's a bit confusing, really.
G(II)112 / GC126 Out of the depths / If You O God Laid Bare Our Guilt (Foley) A cantored Psalm with a simple response "If you O God laid bare our guilt, who could endure it, who could endure it". Sound sample and sheet music here (search for "If you O God laid bare").
NCH472 / UMH474 / VU670 / R297 / ELW875 / HPP434 / HPSS404 / G(II)637 / GC874 / GC(II)847 / G(3)955 / CP509 / W&R500 / Cha628 Precious Lord take my hand A classic gospel song.
TiS 667 / G(II)415 / GC591 How shall I sing to God (Wren) The words are excellent, but neither the tune in TiS or Gather hymnals is straightforward because of the difficult meter; this might be a good song for your musicians to present to start teaching the congregation so they can remember it in more difficult times. All lyrics and sheet music sample of the Gather hymnal melody (HOPE) here.

The next 3 are all variations of the same Gelineau (cantored) Psalm, but with different responses. They are all pretty good, so I'm listing them all! There is just one change needed to make the Psalm inclusive (just change "his word" to "God's word" and it will be fine).
GC128 Out of the depths / I place all my trust in you O God (Gelineau) The original response from Gelineau. Very simple. Words to the response are "I place all my trust in you O God, all my hope is in your saving word". Sound sample and sheet music here (search for "I place all my trust"). Note this one also has a (non-inclusve) Trinitarian formula at the end.
G(II)113 / GC127 Out of the Depths / With the Lord There Is Mercy (Gelineau / Haugen) This response is also quite simple, but a slightly different emphasis. "With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption". Sound sample and sheet music here (search for "With the Lord there is mercy").
*TiS 81 Out of the depths / With the Lord there is Mercy (Gelineau / Carroll) Simple response is "With the Lord there is mercy and fullness of redemption". We have used this at Brunswick Uniting and it went quite well.

Alternative Hebrew Scripture Wisdom of Solomon 1:13-15, 2:23-24
God doesn't like death, apparently.
You might find songs for Funerals helpful.
*MV027 Creator God you gave us life (Snowdon) A lovely song, with a stirring chorus. I think it would be quite straightforward to sing: "Through hands that paint majestic skies, and voices chanting melody, with words that reach beyond the page, we comprehend your mystery. Lyrics (loads a pdf).

Alternative to the Alternative: Lamentations 3:22-33
*TiS 617 / NCH413 / UMH517 / WoV736 / ELW626 / PH342 / W&R75 / SP164 / 82Hml-695 / Lau428 By gracious powers so wonderfully sheltered (Bonhoeffer / Pratt Green) Wonderful words by Bonhoeffer. Lousy tune. Words fit well to O Perfect Love if you find the tune too tricky. Can also be sung to BERLIN or INTERCESSOR. Lyrics.
VU267 / W&R20 / SP288 / Lau897 Like a mighty river flowing (Perry) Lovely words of the presence of God in nature. Some of them are here.
*TiS 156 / AHB 91 / AoV1-135 / ATA 123 / CH212 / UMH145 / VU409 / ELW556 / HPP267 / HPSS469 / G(II)546 / GC756 / GC(II)748 / G(3)855 / CP003 / W&R35 / Cha053 / URW186 / 82Hml-008 / Lau671 Morning has broken (Farjeon) This song makes me smile every time. Here's Yusuf Islam (when he was Cat Stevens) in 1976 (love those green boots).
*CP517 / W&R503 O God your constant care and love (Lanier) Quite good words about God's presence with us through our lives. Sung to a standard hymn tune. Lyrics and tune sample.

Alternative Psalm Psalm 30
PH181 Come Sing to God O Living Saints (Anderson / ELLACOMBE) Good, simple, inclusive, humble and realistic words based specifically on this Psalm. Sung to a well known hymn tune (I sing the mighty power of God). Many congregations choose to sing only the first and last verses; the middle two are much more challenging. Lyrics for 1st & last verse (search for “come sing”).
Iona (There is one among us) Lord you can turn all mourning into dancing An excellent simple refrain from John Bell “Lord you can turn all mourning into dancing, evenings of grief to mornings of great joy”
*TiS 647 / AoV2-012 / ATN 25 Comfort, comfort all my people (Mann) Easy to sing, beautiful lyrics. Chorus is “Comfort, comfort all my people, with the comfort of my word. Speak ye tender to my people, all your sins are taken away”. Lyrics, mp3 sample.
ATE 253 He turned my mourning into dancing This is not at all inclusive, but if you change the lyrics to make it addressed to God “You turned my morning into dancing”, it’s much much better.

Tune In: You in all our worries / All will finish well “In this world where injustice reigns, you are in the midst of pain”. Excellent words of reassurance in a difficult world. Sound sample, lyrics and songbook available here.
*NCH085 / SFFS 2082 / Cha623 / ZSS105 Woke Up This Morning (African-American Spiritual) A great Spiritual. If you don't have one of these sources, you can just make it up from this video.... This could be a good Sunday to make use of those choir stalls; could even get the kids to write their own lyrics... Surreal version here.  Good for kids.
*TiS 181 / AoV2-032 / GC(II)497 / CP589 Come O God of all the earth / Sing Out Earth and Skies (Haugen) Another big favourite. Sheet music, lyrics. Sound sample
*CH683 / VU420 / GC(II)469 / CP598 / W&R553 / SP156 / URW132 Go to the world Go into all the earth (Dunstan) Great words of sending out. Can be sung to a couple of different tunes. SINE NOMINE is the easiest and best known. Sound sample. Sheet music sample.
NCH433 / CH727 / UMH707 / VU703 / HPP474 / W&R515 / Cha638 In the bulb there is a flower (Sleeth) A simple song of hope symbolised in nature. Particularly good for those churches in colder Northern Hemisphere who have a while to go before Spring. Lyrics.
VU166 / SFFS 2210 Joy Comes with the Dawn (Light) Lovely words. The verses are very straightforward; it might be helpful to teach the chorus because there's a couple fof jumps. Lyric slide show!
*AoVK-125 / ATW 489 Turn our sadness upside down (Leigh Newton) Good for kids, and adults too. Simple tune, but not so simple that it’s boring. Lyrics (search in the page for "sadness"). Good for kids.

2 Corinthians 8:7-15
*TiS 721 / Iona (LFB) / URW431 / Lau124 He became poor that we may be rich (Iona) A simple chant. Timing is a little bit tricky, so you will need to take a little time to teach it initially. "He became poor, that we may be rich, loving the world and leaving his throne; King of all kings, and Lord of all Lords, flesh of our flesh and bone of our bone".
TiS 174 / UMH194 Morning glory starlit sky (Vanstone). Quite amazing words and a very singable tune. There are six verses so everyone will know the tune by the end – still, it would be good to play it through to the congregation before singing. Very challenging yet still poetic words. May be a bit old-fashioned for some? Lyrics can be found here. The lyrics could also be read as a poem.
TiS 288 / Iona Not the powerful not the privileged (Bell) Note that the lyrics are masculine for God in one instance in the 4th verse. The lyrics are great though, so perhaps balance this song with some feminine imagery elsewhere in the service! The tune is not difficult.
Recorded music Someday soon our time will come (Dead Heart Bloom) I don't know if this really fits, but it seems to fit the Pauline ideas of being courageous in faith. See what you think - I think this could work very well played after the sermon, if you are the type of preacher who likes to end with questions rather than answers. Make sure you make the lyrics available to your congregation; I had to listen 2 or 3 times to hear them well. You can download the lyrics here. Mp3 available from iTunes.

Mark 5:21-43

The healing of the woman with a haemorrhage and the raising of Jairus' daughter
*Tune In: God's Mercy. A beautiful ballad of healing: "Like the sun upon my skin, I can smile and take it in, and my wounds begin to heal, that's God's mercy". Lyrics and sound sample.
*Seeds of Faith Jesus’ hands are Healing Hands (Bruxvoort-Colligan). A simple and fun kid’s song. "Jesus hands are healing hands, full of love and grace”. Lyrics, sound sample and songbook available here. Good for kids.
*TiS 665 / AoV2-008 / Iona (Common Ground) / CH360 / VU117 / StJ / SP246 Jesus Christ is waiting (Bell) A good and well known hymn. Lyrics here (scroll down just a little bit).
*TiS 737 / Iona (Common Ground, HSNW, T1AU) Lord Jesus Christ lover of all (Bell) I don't know why this chant works so well for Maundy Thursday, but it does. Note that some versions (T1AU at least) has a beautiful 4 part harmony arrangement with excellent moving parts in the lower registers.
Lyrics.
TiS 692 Sometimes a healing world is comfort (Michaels) A good song about healing. The verses take a little getting used to and the chorus is very joyous and simple. Perhaps get your congregation to join in as they become confident - there are 5 verses to learn on.

*Iona (Love From Below / common ground) / CH718 / VU613 / G(II)401 / GC575 / GC(II)558 / CP292 We Cannot Measure How You Heal (Bell) Really very excellent words to a very familiar celtic air. Easy to sing; be careful not to get too fast; it's tempting but the words need a slower tune. Sheet music sample. Sound sample.
*CH570 / UMH512 / W&R495 When the storms of life are raging (stand by me) (Tindley) A good gospel song. It also fits very well with the Goliath reading "Lord, who never lost a battle, stand by me". Hymnals have a range of translations. Older style lyrics. We sing it pretty upbeat. Note, I am going to suggest this song for next week's gospel reading as well, so it might be worth teaching this week! Good for kids (unless you sing it like Elvis).
TiS 661 / UMH274 / W&R364 Woman in the night (Wren) A song about many women in the Bible and the women that we meet every day. Tune will be fine if you give the congregation a chance to join in only on the chorus until they are confident (8 verses, but they are short ones). Might be good used a few times with a few verses each time through the service.
*NCH274 / SFFS 2046 / CP390 Womb of Life and source of being (Duck / LADUE CHAPEL) Excellent words. The tune is unlikely to be familiar, and is just a little bit tricky. Some hymnals also list IN BABILONE which is easier and more familiar.
*MV132 Great sorrow prodded Jairus (Stilborn) A simple storytelling song with honest, inspiring lyrics.
*MV149 CoC35 Peace for our children (Lankshear-Smith) A simple and quite repetitive (in a nice way) song that prays for peace for children, women, men, families, nations… and the soul. Good for kids.

Songs, Hymns, Music for Proper 7B/Ordinary 12B/Pentecost 4 (24 June 2012)

1 Samuel 17:(1a, 4-11, 19-23), 32-49 or 1 Samuel 17:57-18:5, 18:10-16
David slays Goliath, bringing victory to the Israelites
*Traditional Only a boy named David This is fun and very old Sunday School song, which I think is still fun, espcially with actions! Free sheet music (loads a pdf). Good for kids.
*TiS 561 / AHB 467 / NCH494 / CH535 / LBW498 / CP(E) 621 / 82Hml-564/5 Who would true valor see / All who would valiant be / We who would valiant be (Bunyan) A lovely old hymn, with old-world imagery. I think it still works OK. TiS and NCH have inclusive language throughout, while other sources are quite varied. I really like the tune MONK'S GATE. Particularly nice with light instrumentation. A violin / flute and a drum may be all you need for this. One version of the lyrics.
*Iona (M&G, T1AU) / MV099 / GC(II)673 / G(3)763 / Lau996 Stand O Stand Firm (Cameroon) I love having an excuse to sing this simple and powerful song. Very easy for your congregation. You can make up cantor parts too “Oh my sisters…. Oh my brothers… Oh my children….” or you can name countries you are praying for in your intercessions. Good for kids. Scottish sound sample. Lead sheet.
*Online Resource Hear the message we now are proclaiming / El mensaje que hoy proclamamos. This jubilant Colombian song of liberty and new life for the poor and suffering would fit well with this reading. This energetic song is not hard to sing, and if the congregation sings only the chorus, while a cantor sings the rest, they will be able to easily sing along by the 3rd verse without stress.  Free sheet music.
*ATW 463 / Iona (T1AU) / ELW721 / SFFS 2219 / GC(II)451 / G(3)528 / W&R296 / URW436 Goodness is stronger than evil (Tutu / Iona) Words from Archbishop Desmond Tutu. "Victory is ours, victory is ours, through him who loves us". Some congregations change the last line to "Compassion is ours, compassion is ours...". It depends on the context in which you sing it, I suppose. Sound sample. Good for kids.

Psalm 9:9-20
God does not forget the needy.
The songs listed for the 1 Samuel reading would be good for this reading.
Lyrics.
*Iona (SBL) / MV068 / G(II)405 / GC581 / MV068 On the poor, on the poor / Kyrie Guarany (Sosa) A simple challenging Kyrie from Paraguay. Sound sample. Sheet music sample
*TiS 741 / AoV1-017 / ATE 282 / LBW368 / ELW407 / GA431 / SFFS 2200 / G(II)410 / GC586 / GC(II)566 / G(3)666 / Taize / W&R484 / Srce519 / URW390 / Lau929 O Lord hear my prayer (Berthier) A simple and very well known Taize chant. Works well during intercessions. You could read the Psalm between repeats of this chant, or just use as a chant as is. Good for kids.
*TiS 47 / AHB 46 / AoV1-175 / NCH25 / CH161 / UMH117 / VU806 / LBW504 / ELW806 / HPP1 / PH210 / GC614 / GC(II)588 / G(3)688 / CP528 / CP(E) 537 / W&R84 / Cha067 Srce2-441 / URW200 / 82Hml-680 / Lau955 O God our help in ages past (Watts) A good solid very well known hymn! The surprising thing about this one is that the language is inclusive for God in most sources. Not all sources are inclusive for humanity, so check. Lyrics and sound sample.
*Iona (LFB) / Lau930 Listen Lord (Iona / Bell) Beautiful chant-like chorus, can be used on its own or as a response, or used with the verses. Good to use for the intercessions.

Psalm for the 2nd Samuel Reading: Psalm 133
How good it is when kindred live in unity. Oil running down the beard and dew on mountains.

*Singing from the Lectionary Exclusive! Behold how good and Oh how pleasant (Noelle Damico) A beautiful chant that I remember every time I read this Psalm; I have an old photocopy of it and Noelle has given me permission to post it here, complete with my husband's guitarist scribbles. It can be sung as a simple chant, or sung with a responsive bilingual reading of the Psalm (Spanish/English) or really any way you like. You can access the file here. Please let Noelle know if you use this (revdamico_at_gmail.com). Good for kids.
*Emergent Psalter How good it is (Everett) A good 3/4 swung Psalm refrain to a read Psalm. Sheet music (response) here.
*NCH Psalter How pleasant to live in unity (Jeong) A simple Psalm refrain for a chanted or read Psalm.
*VU856 / CH90 / StJ / R212 / ELW649 / SFFS 2231 / Cha292 / Cha764b O Look and Wonder / Miren que bueno (Pablo Sosa). An energetic refrain, and verses are a paraphrase of the psalm. Lots of fun. Chalice also has it arranged as a Psalm response with reading if you prefer. Sample sheet music of melody here (bilingual) - search for "miren que bueno". Sound sample here.
Cha764a Unite us God unite us in your everlasting love (Anon) Simple sung response, and responsive reading.

*CH198 / MV001 / GC753 / GC(II)741 / RS 846 Let Us Build a House / All are welcome (Haugen / TWO OAKS) This song has wonderful lyrics of hope for what a Christian community can be like, and a chorus that joyfully says “All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place”. Sheet music sample. Sound sample. Lyrics (scroll down a little).
AoVK-113 Thank you O Lord for this world of ours (Barr) A good kids song in two parts.
Good for kids.
Psalm Project: Sharing the Road (Bruxvoort-Colligan) A cool rock song based on the Psalm with an excellent chorus. Sound sample, lyrics, theology and songbook available here. Good for kids.
Linnea Good In unity God blesses us (Bauman / Good) Simple refrain
*G(II)525 / GC727 / SP244 / URW335 How Good It Is, what pleasure comes (Duck) Good words celebrating the joy of a faithful community. Sung to a familiar shape note tune. Lyrics and sample sheet music. Midi file of tune.

2 Corinthians 6:1-13
Now is the day of salvation. Paul et al suffer much, but although seen as imposters, they are true.
*TiS 607 / AoV2-126 / ATN 95 / CH528 / VU684 / StJ / SFFS 2171 / HPP406 / G(II)524 / GC726 / GC(II)721 / G(3)828 / CP(E)519/ W&R587 / Srce 462 / Lau898 Make me a channel of your peace (Temple) Youtube video of Sinead O'Connor singing it and lyrics and MIDI file.
*CH527 / SP290 / 82Hml-593 Lord make us servants of your peace (Quinn) A nice alternative to "make me a channel of your peace". This is sung to the very familiar tune "O Waly Waly". It is also sung in the plural (us and we rather than Me and I), which is nice too. Lyrics can be found here.
*TiS 414 / NCH294 / CH616 / UMH192 / VU582 / HPP134 / PH433 / GC550 / CP(E) 198 /  W&R133 / Cha257 There's a Spirit in the Air (Wren) A good song of getting the business of following Christ done. Speaking out, caring for others, being changed. Hymnals vary in the tunes they use. I like the TiS tune, which I tend to think of it in 6/8 instead of 6/4). Lyrics and a sample of one tune that you could use.
NCH495 / HPP443 / HPSS343 / W&R581 Called as partners in Christ's service (Beecher) A good song of commitment - particularly good if you are commisioning people to new roles this week, and good for any other service too. Sung to a standard tune.
WoV659 O Sun of Justice / Jesu Dulcis Memoria (Plainsong) I really like these words. They can also be sung to TALLIS CANON if you get nervous about Plainsong.
*ATOK 390 Put on love every day, never hide your love away (Walker) A fun song for kids!  Good for kids.

Mark 4:35-41
Jesus calms the stormy waters
*CH570 / UMH512 / W&R495 When the storms of life are raging (stand by me) (Tindley) A good gospel song. It also fits very well with the Goliath reading "Lord, who never lost a battle, stand by me". Hymnals have a range of translations. Older style lyrics. We sing it pretty upbeat. Note, I am going to suggest this song for next week's gospel reading as well, so it might be worth teaching this week! Good for kids (unless you sing it like Elvis).
MV153 Body Mind and Spirit (Motum) A lovely gentle song about Christ as abundant life, resting within us stilling the stormy water. Easy to sing, and quite beautiful.
UMH476 / PH373 Lonely the Boat / Kahm Kahm hahn Born Sanaoon Simple Korean melody to this storytelling song. I would only sing the first 3 verses, although others may find the last two meaningful as well. Lyrics here (loads a pdf).
*TiS 728 Jesucristo reina reina ya This fun chorus from Argentina is just lots of fun, and our congregation hasn't sung it for a while (although the musicians often play it!). Good for kids.
FFS53 Out of the storms and seabirds' calling (Gibson) The song is about people who travelled across the seas to establish a church in New Zealand, but it would work for Australia too. "Out of the storms and seabirds' calling, far from the islands of their birth, leaving an old world half behind them, seeking new paradise on earth, voyagers all, they sailed the future, settled and made this place their home".
*BUC Resource Bring me home (Anderson) I'm not sure where to find this reflective song that Sheree wrote in 2006, but I think it would be really great to sing again.
*?Recorded music Storm (Lifehouse) This song could be very helpful, played for a congregation going through difficult times. I usually prefer songs that are more communal than personal, but hey... this would be really helpful for teenagers, I reckon. Youtube with lyrics
Cha181 The Storm Is Strong (Dunstan) Simple story telling hymn. Lyrics. Note that this congregation has split the verses to be sung partly by the leader and partly by the congregation.
R263 / ELW794 Calm to the waves (Bringle) I like these words, and the tune is simple. Lyrics. Tune sample.

Songs, Hymns, Music for Proper 6B/Ordinary 11B/Pentecost 3 (17 June 2012)

1 Samuel 15:34-16:13
Ruddy and handsome David is anointed. God doesn't see as we see.
*TiS 681 Lord let me see see more and more (Langmead) A prayer to see, hear, care, learn and love with God. Very straightforward to sing. It can get a bit "ploddy". Might be a good idea to use different instrumentation, alternate women and men for a verse or two and definitely use an a cappella verse! If you don't do this often, I can't recommend highly enough the odd verse without accompaniment in a hymn with more than 4 vereses. It helps the congregation to hear each other. Sound sample and sheet music.
*AoV1-021 / ATOK 402 / StS114 / G(II)488 / GC682 / GC(II)669 / G(3)761 / Lau858 God Has Chosen Me (Farrell) Energetic, and great words of justice. Can be rocky or smooth, however you like it. Good for kids. Sound sample and lyrics.
Psalm 20
God answers us in our time of need and gives us victory...
NCH Psalter Psalm 20 A lovely cantored Psalm. The refrain is "Answer us, O God, when we call".
TiS 554 / AHB 459 / ATOK 384 / NCH410 / UMH142 / LBW453 / ELW769 / HPP383 / HPSS282 If thou but trust in God to guide thee / If you but trust in God to guide you If your congregation is familiar with this hymn, I highly recommend looking at the NCH version which, unlike most others, has inclusive words. There is also variation as to whether the song is sung about "If we will trust in God" or "If you will trust in God". Sound sample and one version of the lyrics here.
HPSS169 / W&R445 In the Day of Need (Warren) A good simple paraphrase of the Psalm to a very hymny tune.
*AoV2-070 / ATW 496 / MV090 / StJ / G(3)719 Don't be afraid (Bell) Excellent. I love this song of reassurance. "Don't be afraid, my love is stronger. My love is stronger than your fear". This song can be used as a response to intercessions. Good for kids.
Iona (LFB) / Lau930 Listen Lord (Iona / Bell) Beautiful chant-like chorus, can be used on its own or as a response, or used with the verses. Good to use for the intercessions.
Source Unknown (BUC Church folders) Turn an ear to me O Lord / Answer when I call (Foley) This is based on Psalm 102, but I think it will also fit with this Psalm.

Alternative Hebrew Scripture:  Ezekiel 17:22-24
God will plant a little bit of a tree and it will become tall, and a place of shelter, etc;
Some of the songs suggested for the Mark reading (below) will also fit.
*StS116 I saw a tree by the riverside / The Tree Song (Ken Medema) A great kid’s song about roots growing down to the water, and leaves growing up to the sunshine, and bearing fruit, and all that great stuff. Good for kids. Video of Ken singing this song. Lyrics.
*Linnea Good Strong as living Trees A lovely haunting chant. Good for kids and adults alike.
*TiS 755 / ATA 196 / CH804 / VU884 / SFFS 2278 / HPP219 You shall go out with joy / The trees of the field This is a good hand clappy foot stomping song. Fun. Good for kids.

Psalm for the Ezekiel reading Psalm 92:1-4, 12-15
The righteous are like palm trees; give thanks....
Some of the songs suggested for the Ezekiel reading (above) will also fit.
CH056 How good it is to thank you Lord (Church Hymnary) A hymn version of this Psalm. Not amazing, but straightforward.
TiS 50 / Taize / CP464 It is good to trust in the Lord / Bonum est confidere (Berthier) A classic, and fairly formal chant from Taize including an ostinato.
GA054 / G(II)80 / GC86 Lord It Is Good (Bonighton) Could be quite good. Nice energetic tune, and interesting Cantor part. This is quite majestic; Needs a cantor for the verses. Wouldn't work with read verses as the refrain is very short. Sound and sheet music sample.
Emergent Psalter The righteous flourish and grow (Everett) A nice simple refrain with the verses to be read over improvised music. Sheet music sample (refrain only).
NCH476 /  CH565 / VU716 / WoV781 / LBW294 / ELW596 / GA454 / SFFS 2212 / HPP395  / G(II)427  / GC603 / GC(II)598 / G(3)685 / CP401 / W&R424 / Cha619 / SP296 / URW170 My life flows on in endless song (Lowry) A wonderful hymn. Lots of great recordings of this are available too. It's not so great if it is not familiar to your congregation, but once known, it is worth hanging on to.

2 Corinthians 5:6-10, (11-13), 14-17
Paul gets a bit circuitous again.
*AoV2-007 / AoVNG110 See I Make All Things New (O'Brien, Watts) I really love this song. “New, as night turns to morning, the spirit is calling I’m with you, I make all things new”. A nice acapella sound sample (search for "See,"). I usually play it with more of a jazz feel.
*TiS 671 / AoV2-121 Made in God's Likeness (Lewis/Spence) Excellent Australian imagery. This is one of my very favourite songs. It is not difficult if you have a good musician at the helm. If it is new to your congregation, they will be able to join in on the verses by the time you get to the 3rd one. The change in tone with the verse really lifts this song. Good for kids.
Iona (Sent By The Lord) / CH275 / VU34 / R101 / ELW247 / SFFS 2232 / CP588 / W&R157 / SP10 / URW415 Come now O Prince of peace / O-So-So (Lee) A lovely simple and gentle song, inclusive for God and people. One of very few songs from Asia in Western hymnals.
*TiS 688 Come to be our hope O Jesus (Marachin) This is a really fun Latin American song from the World Council of Churches Assembly in Canberra. It's not easy the first time, but once you've heard it, it's very catchy and good for kids. The words are really excellent, despite a slightly clunky translation. Use some maracas. It would be worth teaching to your congregation! Good for kids.
*ATA 200 / CH530 / VU639 / CP(E) 548 / URW109 One more step along the world I go (Carter) A good fun kid's song from Sydney Carter which many of their parents will remember. "And it's from the old I travel to the new, keep me travelling along with you". Lyrics and a really slow and clunky sound sample.
*NCH387 / HPSS443 / GC(II)646 / CP524 O Christ the great foundation (Lew) Excellent words of salvation and justice from Timothy Tingfang Lew, sung to the tune of "The church's one foundation" (AURELIA). There is a second possible tune (ABREU), which is more challenging. Lyrics. Note that the translation in the NCH is slightly different, and more inclusive.
*TiS 687 God gives us a future (Smith) Great words to a very easy hymn tune. Careful not to let it get the tune get too pompous; the words are not! "God gives us a future, daring us to go into dreams and dangers on a path unknown. We will face tomorrow in the Spirit's power, we will let God change us for new life starts now!". Lyrics here (scroll down). The hymn has been split into to two parts to include the blessing and words of mission.
*TiS 217 / AHB 148 / NCH43 / CH519 / UMH384 / VU333 / LBW315 / ELW631 / GA463 / HPP48 / HPSS376 / GC622 / GC(II)613 / G(3)641 / CP485/6 / CP(E) 516 / W&R358 / Cha517 / Srce457 / URW100 / 82Hml-657 Love divine all loves excelling (Wesley) Can't possibly sing this song too often! A beautiful classic song and most hymnals use a very inclusive version of this hymn, even the AHB! Lyrics and sound sample.

Mark 4:26-34
Mustard seeds....
Seeds of Faith: The seed song (Bruxvoort-Colligan) Supremely silly and fun. A good song to sing for the kid’s talk, and get them involved in the actions. Lyrics and sound sample here. Good for (smaller) kids
*TiS 382 / AoV2-131 / ATN 15 / NCH238 / CH417 / UMH311 / VU186 / LBW280 / ELW570 / HPP210 / G(II)318 / GC444 / GC(II)456 / G(3)534 / CP237 / CP(E) 153 / W&R311 / Cha230 / 82Hml-204 / Lau278 Now the green blade riseth (NOEL NOUVELET) I love these words and this simple French folk tune. I particularly like this played to guitar, but TiS has an excellent piano arrangement too. Lyrics and tune sample.
NCH433 / CH727 / UMH707 / VU703 / HPP474 / W&R515 / Cha638 In the bulb there is a flower (Sleeth) A simple song of hope symbolised in nature. Particularly good for those churches in colder Northern Hemisphere who are heading into Spring. Lyrics.
*WoV658 / ELW506 / URW078 The word of God is source and seed "The Word of God is source and seed; It comes to die and sprout and grow. So make your dark earth welcome warm; Root deep the grain God bent to sow." There's a very helpful commentary including the lyrics of the hymn here.
*NCH 528 / UMH583 / WoV753 / Cha478 You are the seed / Sois la semilla. This is a simple song to sing, and the words are very cheering. “You are the seed that will grow and new spout; you’re a star that will shine through the day”. Good for older kids who can read all the words.
*MV 174 Soil of God (Holy Ground) This is probably most appropriate for last week’s reading, but would also fit for this week. The tune is quite siple and the words are good “Soil of God, you and I, stand ready to bear seeds of faith nourished by God’s tender care”.
*Tune In: Kingdom Come (Lees). A song about what the kingdom might be like, with plentiful images from the parables. Sample and lyrics here.
*Taizé / AoVNG125 / MV146 / GC(II)637 The Kingdom of God is justice and peace and joy in the holy spirit. A joyful chant. I normally sing it a bit more bouncy than the sample on the Taize site. Good for kids. Sample and lyrics.
ATA 181 Faith like a mustard seed (Prewer) A simple round. I would just sing the first verse. Good for kids
UMH275 The kingdom of God is like a grain of mustard seed
Gospelling to the beat See the little seed (McRae) A simple little song for kids. Not fully inclusive.
Recorded music From little things big things grow (Paul Kelly) This tells the story of a Native Title claim which has very little to do with this reading except the acknowledgement that small steps can achieve something big. There's also a children's book based on this song which could make a good story for kids.

Songs, Hymns & Music - Proper 5B/Ordinary 10B/Pentecost 2 (June 10, 2012)

1 Samuel 8:4-11, (12-15), 16-20, (11:14-15)
The people want a king as ruler instead of God, even though kings are rotten; This wasn't easy to find songs for - the Psalm below will also fit.
*Taizé / AoVNG125 / MV146 / GC(II)637 The Kingdom of God is justice and peace and joy in the holy spirit. A joyful chant. I normally sing it a bit more bouncy than the sample on the Taize site. Good for kids. Sample and lyrics.
*Tune In: Kingdom Come (Lees) A song about what the kingdom might be like, with plentiful images from the parables. Sample and lyrics.
*NCYC'97 Insansa ku mwamba (Traditional Zambian) A good African song. Joy in God's Kingdom, Joy in God, Joy in Heaven. NCYC'97 has an extra vocal part which is really simple and effective. Good for kids.

Psalm for the Samuel reading: Psalm 138
God is great, strengthens us, protects us, God regards the lowly
*Linnea Good I lifted my voice and spoke your name, your word of answer swiftly came a very simple congregational response to the Psalm being spoken. It would be great to do this. Need a confident reader who can preferably lead the singing, or an attentive musician to come in at the right spot.
*Emergent Psalter They shall sing of the ways of the Lord (Everett) Simple psalm refrain and Psalm spoken over music in between the refrains. Sheet music (antiphon only).
GC(II)700 / G(3)799 Lord you lead through sea and desert / You are strong you are holy (Dunstan) Simple version of this psalm with a strong chorus. I don't know if our congregation would like it though. Sheet music. Sound sample
AoV2-002 / AoVK-5 / StS049 / SFFS 2218 / G(II)461 / GC649 / GC(II)627 / G(3)721 / URW158 / Lau776 I will come to you in the silence / You are mine (Haas) Tune is a bit mushy and requires a cantor for the verses (tricky!). The lyrics are excellent and full of strength. Chorus is easy to sing. Keyboard sample. Sample sheet music
Iona (SBL) / CH140 / MV181 / WoV727 / ELW554 / G(II)341 / GC495 Lord Your Hands Have Formed This World / The Earth is the Lord's (Oliano) Good words of creation to a lovely, and not too difficult, Phillippino melody. Lyrics (first verse only) Tune.
TiS 86 / Srce793 With my whole heart I will praise you O Lord (Duba) Ps 138 This refrain is fine. Verses should be read, perhaps during some background music.
*SFFS 2082 / Cha623 / ZSS105 Woke Up This Morning (African-American Spiritual) A great Spiritual. If you don't have one of these sources, you can just make it up from this video.... This could be a good Sunday to make use of those choir stalls... Good for kids.
ATW 480 On the day I called (Farrell)
GC(II)700 Lord you lead through sea and desert / You Are Strong You Are Holy (Dunstan) Simple version of this psalm with a strong chorus.

Genesis 3:8-15
Adam and Eve afraid of God after eating the apple
*Recorded Music The Garden (Bobby McFerrin) This song is about the Garden, and the Fall, and I think the lyrics fit well for this reading; would be useful to project the words and some images for this? Video and lyrics.
*Tune In: God is walking in the garden (Brown) A gentle song, and the first verse refers to this reading.  Reference recording, lyrics and songbook. Good for older kids.

Psalm for the Genesis reading:  Psalm 130
Out of the depths I cry to you O Lord*Iona (Sent By the Lord) / MV066 Senzenina?
*SFFS 2136 / NCH554 / GA227 / VU611 / G(II)636 / GC877 Out of the Depths O God we call to you (Duck) FENNVILLE A simple and honest hymn, which sings this Psalm from the perspective of a community trying to work out its faith together. Excellent words and the tune is quite straightforward. Lyrics and sheet music sample. Video with lyrics (click on "more info" near the Subscribe button for the lyrics).*
*Taize / CH276 / VU22 / ELW262 / GA283 / G(II)256 / GC332 / GC(II)340 / CP094 / W&R166 Wait for the Lord (Berthier) Wait for the Lord whose day is near, wait for the lord, keep watch, take heart. A lovely simple Taize chant. Sheet music, translations and sound samples.
*AoVK-58 We wait in hope for the Lord (Ford) Simple a cappella round; also good for kids "We wait in hope for the Lord, God is our help and our shield. And so our hearts rejoice, for we trust in God's holy name"
NCH472 / UMH474 / VU670 / R297 / ELW875 / HPP434 / HPSS404 / G(II)637 / GC874 / GC(II)847 / CP509 / W&R500 Precious Lord take my hand A classic gospel song.

2 Corinthians 4:13-5:1
Value in non-earthly things; having trouble finding songs for this...

Mark 3:20-35
They think Jesus has gone crazy; he rejects his family, but embraces his new community.
*MV178 / AA158 / SFFS 2225 /  SP&P215 / W&R602 / Cha486 / ZSS91 Who Is My Mother Who Is My Brother (Murray) These lyrics are really solid and inspiring. Sources vary widely with the tunes they provide. MV is a swung tune, which will need to be taught, but the version in W&R is quite straightforward.
*ATFG561 / Tune In: Part of a fam'ly interconnected / Community (Brown) A song about being welcomed and how to work together as part of a community. "Part of a family interconnected, this is community; Welcoming strangers, visiting neighbours, this gives us dignity". Very singable song about building community. Works well for kids as well. A big favourite at Brunswick Uniting. Good for kids. Sound sample, lyrics and songbook.
*Worldmaking.net Brother Jesus right beside me (Bruxvoort-Colligan) This is a great rock song, good for little kids and a favourite of much older kids too. We haven't sung this for a couple of years, and it would be good to do it again. Lyrics and a very silly sound sample that does no justice to the song at all. Good for kids.
*TiS 650 / AoV2-169 / ATA 191 / CH694 / NCH539 / VU595 / ELW659 / AA08 / SFFS 2222 / HPP442 / G(II)476 / GC683 / GC(II)661 / CP500 / CP(E) 393 / W&R391 / Cha490 / SP263 / URW117 Brother, sister, let me serve you / Won't you let me be your servant? (Gillard) I think you all know this one. Lyrics. NCH has a nice turn on the lyrics with "Won't you let me be your servant?" as the first line.

I reckon this week might be a good week for just singing some favourites! You don't have to base every song on the Lectionary, you know.

Songs, Hymns and Music for Trinity Sunday (June 3, 2012)

General Trinitarian hymns (reading-based selections follow)
*TiS 179 / NCH273 / VU312 / GA379 / StJ / URW073 Praise with Joy the World's Creator One of my favourite hymns - strongly Trinitarian lyrics and excellent imagery. I particularly love the “One God in community” phrase. Some versions change "Son" to "Christ" to make it more inclusive. Lyrics (scroll down).
NCH278 / Cha062 / URW198 Creator God creating still (Parker Huber) Excellent hymn of hope for the future sung to a well known tune (ST ANNE). Lyrics and a critique.
*ATW 459 I don't believe in a God up in the sky / God Version 1.0 An excellent rock song about how we think about God, or not! Lyrics and mp3. Good for kids.
*TiS 182 / AoV2-010 / NCH11 / CH134 / VU268 / SFFS 2047 / HPP13 / CP395 / Cha010 Bring many names beautiful and good (Wren) This is a beautiful song, but it's very long (especially if sung too slowly). Try singing one verse unison, then one women, one men, then all together again, to keep people interested in what they are singing. Lyrics.
PH135 / G(II)333 / GC476 / W&R139 God Is One Unique and Holy (Wren) Good words focussed on God's unity although many-faceted. Inclusive and great imagery. The tune is quite simple. Lyrics, sheet music sample and tune sample.
AoV2-084 Father and Mother Creator And Poet (Sears) Trinitarian song with a Creation focus. Sound sample and lyrics.
*NCH355 / UMH648 / VU514 / HPSS523 / W&R149 God the Spirit guide and guardian (Daw) Excellent, inclusive Trinitarian lyrics of God's guidance and blessing on leaders in the church community. Set to a variety of well known hymn tunes including HYFRYDOL (my favourite!), JEFFERSON, BLAENWERN and BETHANY. Lyrics.
CP(E) 463 Holy Trinity of Love (Gaunt) Good solid words. Lyrics.
*G(II)331 / GC472 / GC(II)488 / G(3)563 How Wonderful the Three-in-One (Wren) Stunning words sung to an old American Shape Note melody. Melody line, chords and lyrics.
*FFS47 Maker of mystery (Marnie Barrell/Gibson) Feminine trinitarian imagery. Tune is not hard, but can also be sung to the more familiar DOWN AMPNEY.
*NCH467 / CH117 / VU320 / WoV769 / ELW735 / SFFS 2050 / HPP242 / Cha083 Mothering God you gave me birth (Janzen) Lovely words to the well known tune MARYTON. Feminine trinitarian imagery. I like the tune MOTHER JULIAN (CH4 117(I)) best. Lyrics and one tune.
*CH114 / AA110 O threefold God of tender unity (Wallace) Excellent inclusive Trinitarian words to a simple Celtic air. Lyrics (scroll down).
*MV043 / GC(II)484 The play of the godhead (Bringle / Batastini) Lovely words and a very simple, intuitive tune. "The play of the Godhead, the Trinity's dance, embraces the earth in a sacred romance". Lyrics, sheet music sample and fairly plain and slow tune sample.
*NCH274 / CH118 / SFFS 2046 / CP390 / Cha014 Womb of Life and source of being (Duck / LADUE CHAPEL) Feminine trinitarian imagery. An easier tune, listed in some hymnals is IN BABILONE. Others have LADUE CHAPEL which is a little less intuitive. Lyrics.
PH136 Sovereign Lord of All Creation (Cross) Good standard words to a good standard tune. Nice images.
*AoVK-30 / ATW 419 / Iona (Common Ground, CAYP) / CH757 / MV002 / WoV717 / ELW819 / SFFS 2274 / HPP551 / GC(II)744 / SP&P022 / SP179 Come all you people (Uyai mose) Joyful and pretty easy really for the congregation. If you have WoV or SP&P, they each have a nice Trinitarian version of this. Come and praise the "Most high" / "Saviour" / "Spirit". Sound sample. Good for kids.
*URW126 Give thanks to the Source (Duck) Excellent words to a lovely lilting tune.
MV056 O Come let us praise (Shwe) A good song From Burma. Quite beautiful - will need to be carefully taught to Western ears.

Isaiah 6:1-8
God on the throne surrounded by the seraphim. Angels call God Holy. They bring release from sin; God asks who will go. The prophet is unworthy, but says “Send me”.
*TiS 693 / AoV1-031 / GA212 Come as you are that's how I want you (Browne) Isaiah didn't feel particularly worthy either... This song is beautiful, gentle, simple, and very well known. Lyrics (search for "come as you are"). Slow and mushy sound sample. A good song to start the service.

Taize / MV075 / StS079 / SFFS 2118 / GC(II)479 / SP99 / URW395 Holy Spirit Come to Us / Veni sancte spiritus / Tui amoris (Berthier) Best if you have a cantor, but works well if you don't, too. Sheet music, translations, sound samples.
AoV2-015 / Iona (M&G) / CH773 / MV189 / StJ / TFF140 / ELW529 / SFFS 2273 / G(II)502 / GC705 / RS 806 / W&R659 / ZSS148 Jesus we are here / Jesu Tawa Pano (Matsikenyiri / Zimbabwe) Simple and fun. Much better in the original Shona text (rhythmically speaking) but works OK in English. Good for kids.
VU575 / SFFS 2153 / HPSS369 / W&R574 / Cha614 I'm Gonna Live So God Can Use Me (African American traditional) Good simple tune and meaningful words. Easy to sing and play around with. Good for kids, non-readers and for people for whom English is a second language.
TiS 658 / AoV1-090 / ATE 296 / CH251 / UMH593 / VU509 / WoV752 / ELW574 / HPP541 / HPSS525 / G(II)492 / GC(II)671 / CP(E) 470 / W&R559 / Cha452 / Srce328 I the Lord of sea and sky / Here I am Lord (Schutte). Lyrics, sheet music sample and tune sample here (search for Here I am Lord). Good for kids.
W&R584 / Cha454
Come Celebrate the Call of God (Wren) Good words to a lilting intuitive tune. This song is written to recognise a commissioning or the gift of a particular person's call, but it can also be sung with "our" instead of "her" to make it a song for a whole congregation. Lyrics (downloads a pdf).
TiS 674 / Iona (Common Ground, Heaven Shall Not Wait) / CH253 Inspired by love and anger Powerful lyrics, simple English folk tune. Lyrics (search for "inspired")
HPSS135 / G(II)333 / GC476 / W&R139
God Is One Unique and Holy (Wren) Good words focussed on God's unity although many-faceted. Inclusive and great imagery. The tune is quite simple. Lyrics, sheet music sample and tune sample here (search for Unique).
TiS 132 / AHB 65 / NCH277 / CH111 / UMH64 / VU315 / LBW165 / ELW413 / HPP243 / HPSS138 / G(II)332 / GC474 / GC(II)483 / CP001 / CP(E) 202
Holy Holy Holy Lord God Almighty (Heber / NICAEA) Many sources have good inclusive language for people and God (e.g. CH4 and TiS, but others don't so check your source!)
TiS 180 / UMH105 / W&R58 / Cha013
God of many names (Wren) If this is new it will need to be taught to your congregation as the tune is not intuitive, but it is worth knowing. The chorus is particularly appealing to kids. Lyrics (downloads a pdf)
*TiS 749 / AoV1-154 / AoVK-131 / ATE 305 / NCH360 / Iona (SBL, Freedom is coming) / CH800 / UMH497 / VU572 / WoV773 / ELW809 / HPP340 / G(II)484 / GC677 / GC(II)674 Send me Jesus / Thuma mina You all know this one, right? Good for kids.
*ATOK 412 / Iona (SBL, Common Ground) / CH250 / MV212 / SFFS 2184 Sent by the Lord am I / Sent out in Jesus name / Enviado soy de Dios (Traditional Cuban) / Great rhythm, good words and not too hard to sing (provided you sing it a little slowly the first time!) I prefer the MV translation "Sent out in Jesus' name".
TiS 753 / StS034 / R185 / ELW525
You are holy you are whole A fun and joyous latin-rhythmed song; can also be sung with two parts at the same time. Lyrics here in English, Spanish and Swedish (and a sound sample). Good for kids.

Some Holy Holies (If you are looking for a new one, this might be a good Sunday to introduce it for the Pentecost Season)
FFS33 Holy Holy Holy (responses for communion) Simple tune and good words. An inclusive Holy Holy that's not jarring at all.
MV203 O Holy holy holy god (Kervin) A set of communion responses to a simple and well known English tune (Kingsfold) which is really similar to another English tune (Star of the County Down).
TiS 723 / AoV2-092 / ATOK 381 / Iona (M&G, Common Ground) / CH769 / UMH65 / VU944, VU951 / StJ / R176 / ELW473 / SFFS 2007 / G(II)395 / GC563 / W&R737 / Cha111 / ZSS48 Holy holy holy / Santo santo santo (Argentinian folk song) Better in Spanish, would make BUC people uncomfortable in English, but that may not be a bad thing. We are not so good at devotional worship sometimes.
*TiS 764 / ATOK 380 / SFFS 2256 Holy holy holy Lord (Iona community) Holies and Hosannas in an excellent two part call and response. The two parts overlap a little bit, so will need to be familiar, or introduced carefully if not familiar to your congregation; this has become a favourite at Brunswick.  Good for kids.
AoV1-173
Holy Holy Holy Lord (Chung Ham) Simple chant. "Holy holy holy Lord; praise and honour are yours, for you alone are worthy to receive the glory and praise."
TiS 722 Holy holy holy Lord / Sanctus Dominus II (Taize) A good opportunity to use a cantor and invite the congregation to chant the ostinato. This would be a simple way of bringing some of the "wonder" to your congregation if you have a capable cantor (it's not that hard really!)
Worldmaking.net Holy Holy Holy One A more energetic Holy holy. Sound sample, lyrics and theology here.
TiS 763 Holy holy holy Lord God of power (Farrell) A nice quiet variation.
*TiS 761 / GA124 Holy holy holy Lord God of power and might (Smith) This is the Holy Holy we normally sing for Communion at Brunswick.
GC(II)192 Holy Holy Holy Lord (Beneath the Tree of Life) (Haugen) (Communion response) A good Holy holy. Sheet music and sound sample (search for "beneath the tree")
GC(II)198 Holy Holy Holy Lord (Do this in memory of me) (Haas) (Communion response) Another good Holy holy holy Sheet music and sound sample (search for "do this in memory")
*AoV1-196 / GA097 / GC(II)288 / GC166 / G(II)144 / GC(II)147 Holy Holy Holy Lord, God of power (Haugen) (Communion response) My favourite Holy Holy, from the Mass of Creation Sheet music and sound sample (search for the song number).
AoV2-081 Holy Holy Holy Lord of power and might (Bell/Maule) Communion responses. Thes are also good, but I can't remember what I liked about them.
GC(II)182 Holy holy holy Lord, God of power and might (Janco) Communion responses A nice joyful (or majestic) Sanctus depending on how you do it. Sheet music and sound sample
Psalm 29
*NCH Psalter 29: The voice of God is full of majesty (Hurd). A very simple and beautiful refrain with a paraphrase of the Psalm that is inclusive without losing any of the majesty of this Psalm. Can be used with a reader or cantor. Highly recommended.

Simple tune. Needs a good Native American-style drum beat. This could work well with kids, especially if you get them to drum. Lyrics.
*TiS 447 / AHB 61 / CH112 / VU313 / LBW400 / ELW673 / CP560 / CP(E) 267 God whose almighty word / Lord your almighty word chaos and darkness heard / Thou, whose almighty word A good hymny hymn, very familiar, with the memorable “Let there be light” line at the end of each verse. TiS lyrics are fairly inclusive, but VU is better. Older style lyrics and sound sample.
*TiS 392 / NCH308 At the dawning of salvation Good hymn words of Easter theology and Christ’s presence at Creation to a fun standard American folk tune (NETTLETON)
*TiS 753 / StS034 / R185 / ELW525 You are holy you are whole (Harling) A fun and joyous latin-rhythmed song; can also be sung with two parts at the same time. Lyrics in English, Spanish, Swedish and a sound sample.  Good for kids.

AoV2-089 / Taize / MV086 / SFFS 2156 Give peace to every heart / Da Pacem Cordium (Berthier) A good, simple Taize chant. Sound samples, sheet music (not cantor lines though).
*AoV1-190 / UMH431 / HPP308 / G(II)529 / GC731 / GC(II)723 / W&R614 / Cha677 Let There Be Peace on Earth and let it begin with me (Miller/Jackson) Well known, and great for older kids. AoV changes "Brothers all are we, let me walk with my brother" to "We are family. Let us walk with each other". Good for kids. Lyrics.

The tune in Chalice hymnal is really nice (CANDLER) or O WALY WALY which is used in URW is very straightforward. Other sources use JERUSALEM, which is a bit too militaristic for me. Lyrics and JERUSALEM sample
*TiS 210 / AHB 141 / NCH42 / CH352 / UMH57 / VU326 / LBW42 / ELW295 / HPP74 / PH466 / CP306 / CP(E) 534 / W&R96 / Cha005 / Srce506 O for a thousand tongues to sing (Wesley) A classic. I particularly love NATIVITY for these words, and it's such a fun tune. My son, who is 8, loves it. In the AHB, Christ is masculine, but I think that's okay. Lyrics and one possible tune.

Romans 8:12-17
Being led by the Spirit and God’s adopted children.
Tune In: Father of Earth, Mother of Sea. A latinesque song about the Spirit being with those who are victims, prisoners and the sick, as well as present in our prayers. Sample here.

Good for kids. Lyrics and sample here.

TiS 465 / AHB 399 / Iona (SBL) / CH116 Our God in heaven / Father in heaven / Loving Creator grant to your children (Niles) I really like this hymn, especially the Philippino folk melody to which its set. Newer versions of the hymn from the Christian Conferenc eof Asia have altered the lyrics to "Our God in heaven, Creator God" in the first verse. Other versions, such as CH4 have "Loving Creator, Parent and God"
*MV157 I am a child of God (Harding) A simple song with powerful words. Very easy to learn. I would just sing the first verse this week, as a round. It's important to remember that God speaks through children. Good for kids.

John 3:1-17
Nicodemus and the famous John 3:16
*GtB God is love and love is giving (Langmead) A simple kids' song about God's love. A round.  Good for kids.
TiS 721 / Iona (LFB) / URW431 He became poor that we may be rich (Iona) A simple chant. Timing is a little bit tricky, so you will need to take a little time to teach it initially.

ATOK 316 From the air and from the light (Mann)
*Taize / CP530 By night we hasten in darkness (Berthier) One of my favourite Taize chants. Sheet music, lyrics, translations and sound samples.
*NCH297 / CH736 / VU706 / StJ / AA45 / HPSS528 / W&R518 / Cha649 Give thanks for life the measure of our days (Murray) This song is also good for funerals and is sung to the familiar tune SINE NOMINE. "Give thanks for life, the measure of our days, mortal we pass through beauty that decays, yet sing to God our hope, our love, our praise: Alleluia, Alleluia!". Lyrics (scroll down).
* Worldmaking.net Holy Holy Holy One (Bruxvoort-Colligan) An energetic rocky song about God's love. Sound sample, lyrics etc.
*TiS 494 / W&R678 / Cha375 In water we grow (Wren) Great words, especially if you have a baptism this week. Tune is quite straightforward. Lyrics here (loads a pdf).
ATW 451 Jesus Saviour of the world (Schubert) Simple chant-like song.
*Taize / MV100 Lord God you love us, source of compassion (Berthier) A very simple refrain, which would work well as a response during prayers of confession or of intercession. Sound sample, sheet music and translations.
TiS 174 / UMH194 / CP(E)259 / 82Hml-585 Morning glory starlit sky (Vanstone / KENOSIS) Quite formal words, but very very beautiful song of God's boundless love "Drained is love in making full, bound in setting others free, poor in making many rich, weak in giving power to be". The tune is not difficult, but will need to be taught to a congregation if not familiar. The lyrics could also be read as a poem, and challenges the image of Christ as monarch, but also affirms God's reign. Lyrics.
*AoV1-003 / HPP258 / GA394 / G(II)342 / GC497 / GC(II)495 / RS638 The heavens are telling the glory of God / Canticle of the Sun (Haugen) Energetic waltz of cosmic praise with great lyrics "Come dance in the forest, come play in the field, and sing, sing to the glory of the Lord".
