There is one problem for me with O for a thousand tongues , and that is the line about 'you dumb'. Having ministered in a congregation that included members of the Deaf community, I became acutely aware of how much they object to that word being used to describe them. In Auslan, as in general English usage, the word 'dumb' means 'stupid', not 'mute'. I haven't yet been able to resolve this, except by either omitting the verse, or giving an explanation first.

Thanks Peter,
I have heard this raised before, and have not heard of a good solution. You could use the word "mute" instead of "dumb"? Not sure if that would work well though.
I might ask it of the Facebook group, and I'll tell you if anyone comes up with a solution.
best, Natalie

Peter, Voices United has "Hear him you deaf, you voiceless ones, your tongues again employ".... seems to work pretty well.
