*TiS 179 / NCH273 / VU312 / Iona (Heaven Shall Not Wait) / StJ / GA379 / URW073 Praise with joy the world's Creator My all time favourite Trinitarian hymn. Simple well known tune (Praise my soul the king of heaven), wonderful imagery in the words. I particularly love the “One God in community” phrase. Some versions change "Son" to "Christ" to make it more inclusive. Lyrics (scroll down).
NCH278 / Cha062 / URW198 Creator God creating still (Parker Huber) Excellent hymn of hope for the future sung to a well known tune. ST ANNE
*ATW 459 I don't believe in a God up in the sky / God Version 1.0 An excellent rock song about how we think about God, or not! Lyrics and mp3.
*TiS 182 / AoV2-010 / NCH11 / CH134 / VU268 / SFFS 2047 / HPP13 / CP395 Bring many names beautiful and good (Wren) This is a beautiful song, but it's very long (especially if sung too slowly). Try singing one verse unison, then one women, one men, then all together again, to keep people interested in what they are singing. Lyrics.
PH135 / G(II)333 / GC476 / W&R139 God Is One Unique and Holy (Wren) Good words focussed on God's unity although many-faceted. Inclusive and great imagery. The tune is quite simple. Lyrics, sheet music sample and tune sample.

NCH467 / CH117 / VU320 / WoV769 / ELW735 / HPP242 Mothering God you gave me birth (Janzen) Feminine trinitarian imagery. I like the tune MOTHER JULIAN (CH4 117(I)) best. Lyrics (posted by someone who found it all a bit too much, apparently - the comments that follow the post are also interesting if you have time to read through).

*MV043 / GC(II)484 The play of the godhead (Bringle / Batastini) Lovely words and a very simple, intuitive tune. "The play of the Godhead, the Trinity's dance, embraces the earth in a sacred romance". Lyrics, sheet music sample and fairly plain and slow tune sample.
*NCH274 / CH118 / SFFS 2046 / CP390 / Cha014 Womb of Life and source of being (Duck / LADUE CHAPEL) Feminine trinitarian imagery. An easier tune, listed in some hymnals is IN BABILONE. Others have LADUE CHAPEL which is a little less intuitive. Lyrics.
PH136 Sovereign Lord of All Creation (Cross) Good standard words to a good standard tune. Nice images.
*AoVK-30 / ATW 419 / Iona (Common Ground, CAYP) / CH757 / MV002 / WoV717 / ELW819 / SFFS 2274 / HPP551 / GC(II)744 / SP&P022 / SP179 Come all you people (Uyai mose) Joyful and pretty easy really for the congregation. If you have WoV or SP&P, they each have a nice Trinitarian version of this. Come and praise the "Most high" / "Saviour" / "Spirit".
*URW126 Give thanks to the Source (Duck) Excellent words to a lovely lilting tune.
MV056 O Come let us praise (Shwe) A good song From Burma. Quite beautiful - will need to be carefully taught to Western ears.

Genesis 1:1-2:4a

The first creation story

*CH809 Praise God the Source of life and birth (Duck) Excellent inclusive doxology which can be sung instead of "Praise God from whom all blessings flow" to Old Hundredth. Highly recommended!
*CH242 Is this the way you made the world (Gay) Wow! This song has a great tune, and wonderful wondering words. Highly recommended.
Seeds of Faith Breath of Life (a creation story) (Bruxvoort-Colligan). A simple chant, with a narration of the creation story. The chant could be used on its own, but the creation story is also very beautiful. “Breath of life, breathe in me, you have created all I see… you have created even me”. Take a look at the website and listen to the sample to see what it’s like. Click on Music, then Seeds of Faith.
*TiS 447 / AHB 61 / CH112 / VU313 / LBW400 / ELW673 / CP560 / CP(E) 267 God whose almighty word / Lord your almighty word chaos and darkness heard / Thou, whose almighty word A good hymny hymn, very familiar, with the memorable “Let there be light” line at the end of each verse. TiS lyrics are fairly inclusive, but VU is better. Lyrics here.
*NCH462 / UMH109 / VU265 / WoV757 / ELW684 / HPSS134 / GC580 / RS711 / CP410 / W&R32 / Cha335 Creating God Your Fingers Trace (Rowthorn) A good Trinitarian hymn about Creating, Sustaining and Redeeming God. There are many possible tunes. I like the Presence tune better. Lyrics and a sound sample.
*TiS 156 / AHB 91 / AoV1-135 / ATA 123 / CH212 / UMH145 / VU409 / ELW556 / HPP267 / HPSS469 / G(II)546 / GC756 / GC(II)748 / CP003 Morning has broken (BUNESSAN)
*TiS 418 / AoV2-075 / Iona (EoA, Common Ground) / CH593 She sits like a bird brooding on the waters / Enemy of Apathy (Thainaky) One of my all time favourite hymns. If you do not know this, you should really take a look at it! Very easy to sing if it is not sung too fast. Lyrics can be found here (scroll down).
CP256 Yours the hand that made creation (Rose)
*VU380 / SFFS 2122 / CP656 She Comes Sailing on the Wind (Light) Excellent feminine imagery. The verses are quite tricky if your congregation is not familiar with them. This is a big favourite at our church. Lyrics here (with lots of other good feminine songs - scroll down).
*SSSL31 (Songs from the Still Strange Land) From the beginning / Let the light shine (Quintrell/Simper) Good song, tricky accompaniment, but once you get it it's okay. Will need to be taught to most congregations, or could be presented by the musicians at some point in the service.
*ATW 469 Wind is moving on the waters (Holmes) Nice earthy round. Very simple.
*Online Resource Let There Be Light (Harding) A simple Taize-style chant "God said let there be light, and there was light, and there was light". Very easy and available for download (with free sample) here.
*CP408 Wind upon the waters (Haugen) I really love the words to this song. “Wind upon the waters, voice upon the deep, rouse your sons and daughters, wake us from our sleep, breathing life into all flesh, breathing love into all hearts, living wind upon the waters of my soul.” Note to our liturgists, I have a copy of this at home if you would like to use it.
*TiS 392 / NCH308 At the dawning of salvation Good hymn words of Easter theology and Christ’s presence at Creation to a fun standard American folk tune (NETTLETON)
*TiS 135 / AHB 70 / AoVK-110 / NCH31 / CH137 / UMH147 / VU291 / WoV767 / HPP35 / HPSS267 / RS 635 / CP415/6 / CP(E) 251 / W&R30 / Cha61 / Srce21 All things bright and beautiful Royal Oak The TiS version has beautiful Australian imagery. If your congregation only has the AHB or other versions of the music, it is worth making copies of the TiS lyrics; the congregation will know the tune. Verse 2 and 5 have masculine language for God.
*TiS 671 / AoV2-121 Made in God's Likeness (Lewis/Spence) "Called to create a new world for the Lord". Excellent Australian imagery. This is one of my very favourite songs and it also picks up the Great Commissioning in Matthew. It is not difficult if you have a good musician at the helm. If it is new to your congregation, they will be able to join in on the verses by the time you get to the 3rd one. The change in tone with the verse really lifts this song. Lyrics (search for "Made in").
*TiS 187 / AoV2-130 / CH149 / StS122 Let all creation dance I just love the imagery of this one, and it's a very joyous and familiar hymn tune too. Lyrics (downloads pdf).

Try singing one verse unison, then one women, one men, then all together again, to keep people interested in what they are singing. Lyrics.*TiS 179 / NCH273 / VU312 / StJ / URW073 Praise with Joy the World's Creator One of my favourite hymns - strongly Trinitarian lyrics and excellent imagery. Lyrics (scroll down or search).

*NCH058 / CH618 / AA125 Spirit of love you move within creation (Murray) Good words with a theme of the Spirit working a loom. A range of tunes for this, both familiar and new. I like the Colin Gibson tune (WEAVER), but it can also be sung to PERFECT LOVE.

Sources vary in their set tunes. TiS has a good tune (TENDERNESS) with a nice minor key change to the relative minor for the second verse. Can also be sung to BUNESSAN, if you need a familiar tune. Youtube video with all lyrics.
*NCH274 / SFFS 2046 / CP390 Womb of Life and source of being (Duck / LADUE CHAPEL) Excellent words. The tune is unlikely to be familiar, and is just a little bit tricky.
*SP81 Word that formed creation (Haugen) Really lovely words of creation to the familiar tune NOEL NOUVELET. Note to BUC: I have a copy of this.

*AoV1-003 / HPP258 / GA394 / G(II)342 / GC497 / GC(II)495 / RS638 The heavens are telling the glory of God (Canticle of the Sun) (Haugen) Energetic waltz of cosmic praise. For some reason the sun is male, but it would be easy to make the lyrics more inclusive. Sound and sheet music sample.
ATW 462 When I consider God's design (Hand in hand) Good words of all creation celebrating together. Tune is good, too. Lyrics.
*TiS 187 / AoV2-130 / CH149 / StS122 Let all creation dance I just love the imagery of this one, and it's a very joyous and familiar hymn tune too. Lyrics (downloads pdf).

2 Corinthians 13:11-13
What a great benediction; the OCD people among us (me included) must like the "Put things in order" bit.... *AoV1-043 Breathing now the life of God / Warm Our Hearts (Marshall) Simple round. "Breathing now the life of God the Spirit in us singing, come light up our hearts with joy! Heal and clear our eyes to see! Warm our hearts with peace. Warm our hearts with peace.” Short songs like this are great for kids. When teaching a song that breaks into a round, it’s best to work with as little accompaniment as possible; no accompaniment is best.
*NCH249 / GA517 Peace I leave with you my friends (Norbert) Slow, simple and excellent words. A congregation will pick this up the first time through, I think.
FFS07 Bring peace to us (John Murray) A simple chant with two possible tunes. Both are good. The first is a round. "Bring peace to us, bring peace through us, O God bring peace"
*Iona (LFB) / G(II)407 / GC583 God give us peace that lasts (Bell) Lovely words and a simple hymn tune. Prayer for peace, hope and love. This can also be sung to LOVE UNKNOWN. "God give us peace that lasts, not through the fear of might, but through the force of love, and love of life and right. Where costly wars and weapons lure, Show us our Lord among the poor". Lyrics, sound sample and sheet music (search for "Gifts that Last")
GC(II)722 Jesus give us your peace (Mahler) Gospel song. It kind of merges personal peace with global peace. "Jesus bring us your peace, bring us together, let all the fighting cease…" Lyrics, sound sample and sheet music (search for "Give us your peace")
*AoV1-091 / AoVK-68 / StS016 / G(II)527 / GC(II)720 Peace before us peace behind us (Haas) love this one. Reflective. Careful not too get too schmaltzy because it's long. Less is more. Lyrics, sound sample, and melody line sheet music here (search for "prayer of peace").

*GGives2 What does peace look like to you (Dyson) A really nice simple song for kids about peace. Lots of questions about what peace might mean from images of nature, to an end to war. The last verse talks about a "bridge from God to man" which could be changed to "bridge from God to us".

*Tune In Peace In Our Time (Brown) A groovy bossa nova song of peace and action for peace. Lyrics. Sound sample. Songbook.
TiS 782 / UMH665 / VU964 / Cha437 Go now in peace (Sleeth) A good simple benediction that can be sung as a round. If you have xylophones or marimbas, kids could be involved in playing the accompaniment in TiS. Careful because it can end up really clunky on piano alone.

Songs and Hymns for Pentecost A (June 12, 2011)

Acts 2:1-21
The coming of the Holy Spirit. Note that most of the songs listed for this reading are good for many of the other readings this week.
BUC resource (Tune In II): Tower of Mercy (Brown) A new song from Dave. It would be great to have the musicians play this. "O sweep us into your great breath of life"
*Tune In: Spirit of the Father, Spirit of our Mother / Alive in me Catchy boppy pop song about God's spirit within us and within the world. Music sample, sound sample and lyrics Music sample, sound sample and lyrics.
*TiS 418 / AoV2-075 / Iona (EoA, Common Ground) / CH593 / GA372 / Cha255 / URW165 She sits like a bird brooding on the waters (Bell/THAINAKY) My favourite holy spirit song. Beautiful words and very easy to sing, provided it is not played too quickly The Iona recordings are generally very quick, but there are a lot of words to fit in, so keep it elegantly moderate in speed! Lyrics (scroll down). This will be suggested next week too, so if you want to teach it, now is a good time.
SP&P025 Breathe on me O breath of God (Austin) A lovely simple song which can be sung as "breathe on me" or "breathe on us" depending on whether you want a personal or communal song.
*VU380 / SFFS 2122 / CP656 She Comes Sailing on the Wind / She flies on (Light) Excellent feminine imagery. The verses are quite tricky if your congregation is not familiar with them. You can suggest that they just join in on the chorus if you are concerned. In Australia, this must have been sung at an NCYC at some stage, and certainly at ASCM gatherings, so there are versions of it about. This is a big favourite at our church. Lyrics (with lots of other good feminine songs - scroll down). This will be suggested next week too, so if you want to teach it, now is a good time.
*FFS11 Come teach us Spirit of our God (Murray/Jillian Bray) Excellent words and a good tune.
*AoV1-095 / G(II)324 / GC459 Envia Tu Espíritu My favourite holy spirit song. A catchy latin rhythm; verses are in English and the chorus is Spanish – not too hard for non-Spanish speakers, though.

NCH272 / VU195 / HPSS128 On Pentecost they gathered A simple story-telling hymn. Tune is a simple traditional tune. Lyrics (plus some nice prayers and other stuff) on this website (scroll down).
AoV2-058 Pulsing Spirit rippling river (Dufner) I've just written down in my notes that this is excellent but I can't remember why and I don't have the book this week. Lyrics.
*FFS58

And very easy. Please try to sing it in its original language (Yoruba), it sounds a bit inane in English and it’s not hard!! Encourage your congregation to dance a simple side-to-side step to this; they will enjoy it even more. If we can’t go a little crazy on Pentecost, what hope is there for us, really? A good song to help us remember that our faith is global, and to think of the church and all people in Africa. Sound sample (Thanks Thom!)
*AoV2-061 / ATE 249 As a dream receive your hist'ry (Tanner) A big favourite by a South Australian guy. There are actions too! The chorus is particularly excellent “We will rise up on wings like eagles, run and not be tired, show us your dreams and visions, warm our hearts with tongues of fire, tongues of fire”. Lyrics

Words and tune. Hymnals vary a lot in the lyrics with respect to thees and thys and words like "vesture".
TiS 422 / CH594 / CP(E) 179 Come Holy Spirit come inflame our souls with love (Forster / DIADEMATA) Excellent words to a well known hymn tune. Some small word substitutions are needed to make it gender inclusive for God.
G(II)536 / GC739 / GC(II)729 / RS837 / Cha485 Diverse in Culture Nation Race Excellent. The tune is very simple and familiar (TiS 443) and the words are really excellent (except I know that some people in our congregation don't like the word "race"). Lyrics and sound sample (search for diverse).

TiS 415 / CH588 Praise the Spirit in creation Amazing words. Tune is unfamiliar, but good.
VU207 / HPSS124 / CP041 Spirit of God Unleashed on Earth I like this one. Tune sample and lyrics here.
NCH286 / ATE 218 / VU375 / WoV684 / ELW396 / HPP239 / W&R326 Spirit spirit of gentleness (Manley) Lovely, gentle song. Very easy to sing, but can get slow and ponderous if you're not careful.
Taize / TiS 752 / WoV686 / ELW406 / G(II)326 / GC464 / GC(II)478 Veni Sancte Spiritus (Taize) A more formal Taize chant. Particularly good if you have a cantor. I find it a bit boring without one.
NCH271 / UMH538 / VU196 / HPSS131 / CP249 / W&R333
Wind who makes all winds blow Excellent words. Familiar tune (ABERYSTWYTH).
ATW 469 Wind is moving (Holmes) Nice earthy round.
*Unusual Source: Blow through me Breath of God (Miriam Therese Winter) This chant is very beautiful. It takes a few listens for the congregation to pick it up, or you could ask the musicians to play it as a prayer for the congregation. "Like a pipe, like a flute, like a reed making melody". This can be found in "Songlines, Hymns, Songs, Rounds and Refrains for Prayer and Praise,Crossroad, New York, 1996" or "Womantalk Woman Prayer" (1987)
*Taize / MV075 Holy Spirit, Come to Us (tui amoris ignem) a joyful chant, no cantor required. Music and translations While listed here in Latin, it also sounds very beautiful in English.
Iona / GA377 Come Holy Spirit (Bell) A simple call and response chant.
*GA183 Come Holy Spirit the spirit of Wisdom (Willcock) I just found this song, and it's really great! It's in 7/8 so has a real drive to it, and the words are also excellent about God-with-us and the coming of the Spirit of justice. I think it would really suit many congregations - even though it's in 7/8 it's not hard.
VU381 Spirit of life come unto me (McDade) A lovely simple song beckoning the Spirit. It's a little bit "me, me, me", but a good song of personal devotion.

Alternate Hebrew Scriptures: Numbers 11:24-30
The Hebrew Pentecost: The Spirit shared with the 70 Elders
(The songs above would suit!)

Psalm 104:24-34, 35b
All the great multitudes of the earth point to God's glory
*TiS 135 / AHB 70 / AoVK-110 / NCH31 / CH137 / UMH147 / VU291 / WoV767 / HPP35 / HPSS267 / RS 635 / CP415/6 / CP(E) 251 / W&R30 / Cha61 / Srce21 All things bright and beautiful Royal Oak The TiS version has beautiful Australian imagery. If your congregation only has the AHB or other versions of the music, it is worth making copies of the TiS lyrics; the congregation will know the tune. Verse 2 and 5 have masculine language for God.
*Taize / AoV2-142 / SFFS 2013 / GC(II)576 / CP360 Bless the Lord my soul (Berthier) A beautiful and very well known Taize chant. Sound samples, sheet music.
TiS 175 / GtB Did you ever see a kookaburra laugh A fun kid's song. "Where do all the good things come from?"
TiS 137 / AHB 77 / AoV1-123 / NCH28 / CH181 / UMH92 / VU226 / LBW561 / ELW879 / GA427 / HPP259 / HPSS473 / GC572 / GC(II)548 / RS697 / CP429 / CP(E) 253 / W&R40 / Cha56 For the beauty of the earth (Pierpont) Acknowledges that all these things are gifts from God. Sources vary in how inclusive this hymn is. Check your own source. NCH is fully inclusive. The two most common tunes are probably DIX (TiS 314) and LUCERNA LAUDONIAE. I prefer DIX. Lyrics (including verses not found in many hymnals) and tune samples here.
*TiS 571 / AHB 480 / CH529 / UMH438 / VU416 / CP467 / CP(E) 430 / W&R718 Forth in thy name O Lord I go A nice old minstrelly tune, and timeless words about committing all our works to God. Lyrics.
*TiS 163 / AHB 112 / NCH556 / UMH150 / LBW463 / ELW771 / HPPS268 / W&R644 / Cha651 God who stretched the spangled heavens Good words of creation of nature and cities and creative possibilities for the future. AHB has old masculine language, but it works okay; TiS and other sources are better. There are many possible tunes. I like it best to HOLY MANNA as in the link. Lyrics and sound sample.
*MV015 / GA186 Holy Sacred Spirit (Brown) Gentle chant. Can be used without the cantor part. "Holy Sacred Spirit, breathe your breath on us"
*TiS 152 / NCH4 / UMH89 / VU232 / LBW551 / ELW836 / HPP22 / HPSS464 / GC529 / GC(II)520 / CP425 / W&R59 / Cha002 / URW065 Joyful joyful we adore thee Note that this hymn is not always very inclusive. I prefer more modern translations. Older version lyrics and tune sample.
*TiS 187 / AoV2-130 / CH149 / StS122 Let all creation dance I just love the imagery of this one, and it's a very joyous and familiar hymn tune too. Lyrics (downloads pdf).
G(II)90 / GC101 / GC(II)60 Lord Send Out Your Spirit (Lisicky) Could be fun to use just the refrain as a round. I would sing it much quicker than the sample. Sheet music sample. Sound sample.
AoVK-123 / NCH3 / Iona (M&G) / UMH148 / VU308 / WoV794 / ELW837 / HPSS271 / G(II)338 / GC499 / CP407 / W&R26 / Cha58 / URW232 Many and Great O God are your works / Wakantanka Taku Nitawa (Lacquiparle) Good words. Simple tune. Needs a good Native American-style drum beat. Lyrics.
TiS 65 Send forth your spirit o Lord and renew the face of the earth (Murray) Cantored Psalm. Refrain is simple and inclusive. Verses do not use inclusive language for God.
*TiS 166 / AHB 102 / StB 35 Sing a new song sing a new song Excellent inclusive words from Australian poet James McAuley. The last verse annoys me a bit, but the rest is excellent. Lyrics.
AoVK-113 Thank you O Lord for this world of ours (Barr) A good kids song in two parts.
*AoV2-051 / G(II)325 / GC463 / GC(II)481 Spirit Blowing through Creation (Haugen) Excellent. Don't rush or it's hard to get all the words out.
*TiS 188 Where wide sky rolls down and touches red sand (Smith) Great Australian imagery sung to a familiar hymn tune. Lyrics (scroll down).

1 Corinthians 12:3b-13
All different gifts, all one body
*Iona (Heaven Shall Not Wait) When our Lord walked the earth (Bell / PERSONENT HODIE) Familiar and easy tune, excellent words. Chorus is “God became our neighbour, granting with his favour, Power to speak and heal, grace to know what’s real, wisdom, insight and faith, love and understanding.”
*TiS 671 / AoV2-121 Made in God's Likeness (Lewis/Spence) Excellent Australian imagery. This is one of my very favourite songs. It is not difficult if you have a good musician at the helm. If it is new to your congregation, they will be able to join in on the verses by the time you get to the 3rd one. The change in tone with the verse really lifts this song.
*TiS 421 Where the Spirit is there's freedom (Harling) Fun and good. Can be sung with the congregation in two halves singing each part, which is not too hard once they have the hang of singing it in unison. Lyrics.
*TiS 412 / AHB 324 / ATE 251 / G(II)328 / GC468 / CP651 / W&R130 God sends us the Spirit to befriend and help us / Spirit Friend I like this song from Malawi, but the lack of inclusive language for God sometimes drives me a bit crazy. In Tom Colvin's book "Come Let us walk this road together" he uses more inclusive language than many hymnals that include this song. That is, he writes “God sends us the Spirit” instead of “God sends us His Spirit” and "Spirit of our Maker" rather than “Spirit of our Father”. Less inclusive lyrics and a strange sound sample.
*Tune In: Alive in me (Spirit of the Father, Spirit of our Brother, Spirit of the Living One, Alive in me). Catchy boppy pop song about God's spirit within us and within the world. Music sample, sound sample and lyrics here.
*AoV2-003 / ATOK 313 / CH543 / StJ / R127 / ELW715 / GC(II)512 Longing for light we wait in darkness / Christ, be our light (Farrell). One of my favourites, especially if someone can sing or play the descant line in the later verses. Sound and sheet music sample here.
*AoV1-130 / NCH444 / SFFS 2223 / HPP495 / G(II)533 / GC735 / GC(II)728 / We are one in the Spirit / They’ll know we are Christians by our love A classic 60's song of unity and being an example to others. It's still pretty groovy, I reckon. We often syncopate it a bit at Brunswick. Lyrics and chords here.
*AoVK-40 / NCH524 / UMH585 / ELW677 / HPP466 / G(II)358 / GC514 / GC(II)514 This little light of mine AoVK version has excellent verses that actually make the chorus make sense. Check them out if you have a copy. In the meantime, watch Bruce Springsteen sing it here. It's amazing...
*Tune In: We will sing a new song to the world An energetic song about the gospel, about singing all the new tunes and rhythms that God provides and creating a new earth. A good sending-out song. Sound sample and lyrics here.
AoV1-071 / GC(II)742 Gather Your People (Hurd) Excellent words and eucharistic theology. Good if you are celebrating communion this week. Lyrics, sheet music and sound sample.
TiS 414 / CH616 / UMH192 / VU582 / HPP134 / HPSS433 / GC550 / CP(E) 198 There's a Spirit in the Air (Wren) Great words, to a joyful tune (it looks less so in TiS, but think of it in 6/8 instead of 6/4). All lyrics, melody line music and painfully slow keyboard sample here (I would sing it more than twice this speed if you don't want your congregation to pass out because of lack of breath!) - search for "There's a spirit in the air".
NCH495 / HPP443 / HPSS343 / W&R581 Called as partners in Christ's service (Beecher) A good song of commitment - particularly good if you are commisioning people to new roles this week, and good for any other service too. Sung to a standard tune.
TiS 422 / CH594 / CP(E) 179 Come Holy Spirit come inflame our souls with love (Forster / DIADEMATA) Excellent words to a well known hymn tune. Some small word substitutions are needed to make it gender inclusive for God.
AoV2-013 / AoVK-108 Different Gifts yet we are one (Russell) Perfect words for this passage. Tune is a bit tricky.
*TiS 411 / AHB 328 / NCH266 / UMH537 / VU194 / CP658 / CP(E) 425 / W&R331 Filled with the Spirit's power Excellent inclusive words to a very well known hymn tune.
NCH163 / VU588 / GA522 / G(II)534 / GC736 / Cha492 Many are the lightbeams (Cypriam of Carthage) Nice words "Our one light is Jesus". The Marty Haugen tune is joyful. This would be good for kids as there are not too many words. Lyrics, sound sample, sheet music sample (search for "light beams").
AoV1-086 / G(II)530 / GC733 / GC(II)727 We are many parts, we are all one body I like the chorus much better than the verses, but they are really okay too. The sound sample at Hymnprint is horrifically slow, but look at the sheet music there.
*AoV1-129 / CH665 / UMH62o / VU467 / ELW701 / HPP525 / G(II)599 / GC830 / GC(II)813 One bread, one body. A classic. Don't play it too slow or it takes forever!! Particularly appropriate if you are celebrating communion.
*AoVK-148 / ATOK 388 We are one body (Trish Watts / Monica O'Brien). A good boppy song. Excellent words; good for kids especially.
StJ / GC(II)645 We Are the Body of Christ / Somos el Cuerpo de Cristo Bilingual verses and choruses. Will be good for a congregation where both languages are spoken. Sound sample and Sheet music sample.

John 20:19-23
The "little Pentecost"; Peace be with you
*NCH249 / GA517 Peace I leave with you my friends (Norbert) Slow, simple and excellent words. A congregation will pick this up the first time through, I think.
*Tune in: We are the dream that's longing / Jesus is waiting. An honest catchy rock song about our hesitation to follow and Jesus not only waiting, but continuing to work and change the world. A good sending-out song. Sound sample, lyrics and songbook available here.
ATOK 343 When disciples were frightened / Jesus come and stand among us (Mann) Lyrics here.
*CH786 May the God of peace go with us (Jamieson) A lovely benediction to a traditional Scottish tune. "May the God of peace go with us as we travel from this place; may the love of Jesus keep us firm in hope and full of grace".
*GGives2 What does peace look like to you (Dyson) A really nice simple song for kids about peace. Lots of questions about what peace might mean from images of nature, to an end to war. The last verse talks about a "bridge from God to man" which could be changed to "bridge from God to us".
NCH288 / UMH503 / Cha260 Let it breathe on me (Lewis-Butts) Simple song welcoming the Spirit. I get the feeling this could be tacky, but I don't think it needs to be.
*Seeds of Faith Peace Be With You (Bruxvoort-Colligan) A very simple kids song about peace, and sharing peace. Sound sample and lyrics.
*Tune In Peace In Our Time (Brown) A groovy bossa nova song of peace and action for peace. Lyrics. Sound sample. Songbook.

Alternate Gospel: John 7:37-39
The promise of living water from Christ
*StJ / GC(II)505 / W&R444 / URW144 / Srce2-502 / URW144 Rain Down (Cortez) A good simple gospel song. A very easy chorus, and good verses too. Lyrics and sheet music. Sound sample.
*AoV2-006 / The tide has turned Deeper River / There's a river running deep within the silence of our souls (Digby Hannah). An excellent song of restoration for tired desert-like souls.
*ATW 435 Wellsprings / Like the woman of old. Another song of seeking water in the desert. A favourite of our congregation.
*NCH 45 Christ is the Mountain of Horeb which is flowing Puerto Rican pasodoble folk melody. Very repetitive and easy. Can start slow and get fast, which is always a winner move.
G(II)526 / GC728 / GC(II)725 / URW419 Peace Is Flowing Like a River (Anon) A simple chorus. Great for kids and older people. You won't need to provide words for this after the first couple of verses, because only the first word changes. If you don't provide all the words, sometimes people look around them and notice each other.
*TiS 665 / AoV2-008 / Iona (Common Ground) / CH360 / VU117 / StJ / SP246 Jesus Christ is waiting (Bell) A good and well known hymn. Lyrics here (scroll down just a little bit).

Songs and hymns for Easter 7A (June 5th 2011)

This post replaces my first ever blog post, made for Easter 7A 2008! I can't believe how much this has grown, and feel very glad that my relaxing hobby has become such a useful resource.

Acts 1:6-14
The Ascension: the promise of Christ’s return. The promise of the Spirit. The disciples get together to pray (constantly) before they commence their mission without Christ incarnate.
See here for Ascension songs.
The theme of constant prayer makes use of a Taize chant at various points through the service appealing. Some suggestions:

*Taizé / TiS 741 / AoV1-017 / ATE 282 / LBW368 / ELW407 / GA431 / SFFS 2200 / G(II)410 / GC586 / GC(II)566 / W&R484 / Srce519 / URW390 O Lord hear my prayer (Berthier) A simple and very well known Taizé chant.
*Taizé / CP563 In God alone my soul can find rest and peace / Mon Ame Se Repose (Berthier) A very beautiful chant from Taizé. Music and sound samples for practice here.
Taizé / MV075 / StS079 / SFFS 2118 / GC(II)479 / SP99 / URW395 Holy Spirit Come to Us / Veni sancte spiritus / Tui amoris (Berthier) Best if you have a cantor, but works well if you don't, too. Sheet music, translations, sound samples.
*Taizé / TiS 730 / AoV1-152 / ATOK 387 / CH775 / UMH488 / WoV740 / ELW616 / HPP214 / HPSS599 / G(II)293 / GC404 / GC(II)422 Jesus remember me (Berthier)

*Traditional / StJ / GC(II)567 As I went down to the river to pray (Folk song) Dunno about the "Good old way" bit, but the encouragement to pray together with each other is a good theme, and the song is a favourite in our congregation. I'm not sure if we've ever sung it as a congregation, but it would be good to do so. Here's the clip from O Brother Where art thou, which made it so popular.
*TiS 419 / AHB 596 / NCH270 / CH592 / UMH544 / VU205 / WoV685 / ELW403 / HPP222 / PH314 / CP635 / CP(E) 185 / W&R327 Like the murmur of the dove's song Excellent words and a simple tune. Each verse ends with "Come holy spirit, come". Lyrics and organ sample. I quite like the idea of songs that look forward to Pentecost.
Picks up the coming of the spirit and the ceaseless voice of prayer.

Psalm 68:1-10, 32-35

Let God arise and God's enemies be scattered. God cares for the poor. *TiS 38 / VU787 / GA046 / G(II)63 / GC67 God In Your Goodness / You Have Made a Home for the Poor (Bonighton or Cooney) Each hymnal has a different way of writing the verses, some need a cantor, but all could work well with someone reading the verses. Both versions of the refrain are very straightforward.
TiS 704 / AoV2-090 / Iona (M&G) / CH824 / VU431 / WoV786 / ELW846 / SFFS 2067 / G(II)369 / GC536 / W&R741 / ZSS56 / URW398 Amen We Praise Your Name O God / Siakudumisa (South African) A simple and popular Amen. Not wild about the GIA hymnals English version.
*
MV221 I am walking a path of peace (Tissandier) A good and very simple song for the end of the service.
*MV144 / SP&P073 Like a healing stream
(Harding) Gentle folksy ballad with a lot of water imagery - healing stream, gentle rain, river strong and mighty sea. Would need to be introduced, but would catch on pretty quickly, I think. Sound sample, sheet music sample, and pdf for purchase.
VU267 / W&R20 / SP288 Like a mighty river flowing (Perry) Lovely words of the presence of God in nature; it's quite summery, so better for those in the Northern Hemisphere at this time of year. Some of them are here.
*NCH005 / VU243 Praise to God praise to God for the greenness (Hanaoka) 's beauty; sung to a simple Japanese tune. A good hymn for kids who can read.
*AoV1-137 / ATOK 403 / GA306 / G(II)286 God Of Abraham lead us (Farrell) This one is great. Just don't try to sing all 17 verses! Choose what you like… I love this energetic call and response with the response "Lead us to your kingdom". You can sing with a cantor and response, or you could split your congregation in the middle doing half and half, or you could just have people singing all the way through. Lyrics (downloads a pdf).

1 Peter 4:12-14; 5:6-11
Rejoice in suffering. Be disciplined. Be humble because God cares for you.
*Taizé / MV075 / StS079 / SFFS 2118 / GC(II)479 / SP99 / URW395 Holy Spirit Come to Us / Veni sancte spiritus / Tui amoris (Berthier) Best if you have a cantor, but works well if you don't, too. Sheet music, translations, sound samples.
*Iona (Many & Great, There is One Among Us) /MV99 / GC(II)673 Stand O Stand Firm (Cameroons) I love having an excuse to sing this simple song from the Cameroons. Very easy for your congregation. You can make up cantor parts too “Oh my sisters…. Oh my brothers… Oh my children….” or you can name countries you are praying for in your intercessions. Good for kids. Sheet music, lyrics and sound sample (search for Stand Firm)
*TiS 590 / AHB 165 / AoVK-117 / NCH506 / UMH526 / VU663 / LBW439 / ELW742 / HPP408 / PH403 / CP532 / W&R473 / Cha585 / Srce 776 What a Friend we have in Jesus There is a bit of masculine language, but the song has so many other good things about it. I like both tunes. AOVK has different lyrics, written specifically for kids, which I think are worth singing.
*TiS 561 / AHB 467 / NCH494 / CH535 / CP(E) 621 Who would true valor see / valour see (Bunyan) A lovely old hymn, with old-world imagery. I think it still works OK. TiS and NCH have inclusive language throughout. CH and CP(E) do not have inclusive language, even for humanity. I really like the tune MONK'S GATE. Particularly nice with light instrumentation. A violin / flute and a drum may be all you need for this. Inclusive lyrics (loads a Word document). Last time I sang this was at a Science Fiction Service.

John 17:1-11

Jesus’ parting prayer on our behalf. God’s care for us. Prayer for unity.
*Tune In: Shepherd of the night (Loukes) "Have you ever felt the velvet night wrap you in her warmth". A lovely song with a theme of God’s protection. This is tricky for a congregation, so you might want to ask the musicians to play this. Lyrics, sound sample and songbook.
*Worldmaking.net Brother Jesus right beside me (Bruxvoort-Colligan) This is a great rock song, good for little kids and a favourite of much older kids too. We haven't sung this for a couple of years, and it would be good to do it again. Lyrics and a very silly sound sample that does no justice to the song at all.
*TiS 613 / AHB546 / ATOK 405 / NCH211 / CH166 / LBW469 / ELW765 / SFFS 2197 / HPP265 / GC578/ GC(II)560 / CP506 / CP(E)507 / W&R469 / URW179 / 82HmL-482 Lord of all hopefulness Lord of all joy (Struther) Beautiful words, which I prefer to sing to the well known Irish tune SLANE. Would be a good choice for the final song. Not all hymnals are inclusive. Lyrics. Tune sample.
*Tune In: Father of Earth, Mother of Sea (Brown) A good latin-rhythmed song that seeks Christ’s presence. Lyrics and a sample on this website.
*Tune in The God that I Know (Anderson) A beautiful ballad with female and male images of a loving, embracing God. “He comes with his arms open wide, a sheltering place I can hide”. If this is not familiar to your congregation it would be a good song for a soloist. Sound sample, sheet music sample and songbook.
*Tune In: Like the sun upon my skin / God’s Mercy A beautiful ballad about identifying God's mercy in the beauty of creation. Lyrics, sound sample and songbook available here.
*TiS 411 / AHB 328 / NCH266 / UMH537 / VU194 / LBW160 / CP658 / CP(E) 425 / W&R331 Filled with the Spirit's power (Peacey) A rollicking hymn; a classic and the lyrics are still good to sing today. I prefer the tune WOODLANDS for this hymn.
*AoV1-129 / CH665 / UMH62o / VU467 / WoV710 / ELW701 / HPP525 / G(II)599 / GC830 / GC(II)813 / W&R689 / Cha393 / SP221 One bread, one body. A classic. Don't play it too slow or it takes forever!! Particularly appropriate if you are celebrating communion. Lyrics.
*GC(II)644 / W&R577 / SP167 Summoned by the God who made us / Sing a New Church (Dufner) Excellent words of Christian unity and justice to the well-known tune NETTLETON (TiS 392). Would be a good final hymn. Lyrics and sheet music here.
