Slower Kyries
*TiS 729 / Iona (HSNW) Jesus Christ, Son of God have mercy upon us A very very simple call and response chant.
GC(II)137 / G(3)192 Kyrie (Mass of Creation) (Haugen) Nice refrain, and the cantor verses seem quite good as well. Refrain could be used on its own. Can be sung in both English and Greek. Sound sample. Sheet music sample.
Iona (T1AU) / CH777 / MV067 / URW411 Kyrie Eleison (Bell) A simple call and response Kyrie with an optional vocal or keyboard drone.
*Iona (SBL) / MV068 / G(II)405 / GC581 / MV068 On the poor, on the poor / Kyrie Guarany (Sosa) A simple Kyrie from Paraguay; We sang this at Brunswick on Ash Wednesday. The English translation varies depending on the source. Sound sample. Sheet music sample. Good for kids.
*TiS 736 / AoV2-095 /ATOK 392 / CH776 / Iona (M&G) / UMH483 / VU946 / WoV602 / GA133 / G(II)272 / GC272 / GC(II)249 / RS 385 / SP184 / Cha298 / URW412 Kyrie Eleison (Russian / Ukrainian) Very simple and beautiful Kyrie. Often used. It is very easy to teach the bass part to the men in your congregaton (even those who think they can't sing!). Lovely sound sample. Sheet music sample.Good for kids.
*TiS 734 / ATOK 379 / Iona (M&G) / MV070 / GA134 / SP183 / URW410 Kyrie Eleison (Ghana / Reindorf) Another common favourite. Again, easy to teach your men the bass drone.
Music by Heart 23 Lord have mercy (Everett / Snodgrass) Good for prayer of confession; will need a little time to teach the two congregational parts.
*TiS 735 / AoV1-002 / ATE 238 / UMH484 / VU945 / HPP573 Kyrie kyrie eleison / Kyrie 1 (Taize / Berthier) Probably the simplist Kyrie out there. There are cantored verses; it's also nice as a repetitive chant on its own. Sheet music and sound samples.
Online resource Kyrie (Bayles / Dodd) A good responsive Kyrie with heartfelt prayer. Free sheet music here.
FFS13 E te Ariki (Lord have mercy) (Render) A Maori Kyrie to a beautiful relaxed tune. Needs to be sung in Maori, and this would not be hard.
*TiS760 / GC(II)209 Kyrie Eleison (Mass of Remembrance) (Haugen) A nice simple Kyrie with or without Cantor part. Sound sample. Sheet music.
CH648 Lord have mercy (MacMillan) Simple minor key Kyrie. Written in English
MV069 Kyrie Eleison (Kervin) A very simple Kyrie chant. Sheet music and quite formal sound sample.
Music by Heart 38 Kyrie Eleison / Mercer Kyrie eleison (Haskel) A lovely layered Kyrie that can be taught during the worship service (3 layers).
Music by Heart 39 Kyrie eleison / on five notes (Haskel) Another lovely layered Kyrie that can be taught during the worship service. I think I like this one just a little better (4 layers).
*Iona (Love and Anger) / StS067 / PfAS051G (Alternate Refrain 1)  Have mercy on us Lord / Khudaya rahem kar (Pakistan) A nice alternative, and can be used as a refrain to the Psalm. It would be nice to get your congregation to sing something from South Asia. Also works well in English. Sound sample
PfAS051G (Alternate Refrain 2) Lord have mercy have mercy upon us / Nkosi Nkosi yiba nenceba (South Africa) A simple Kyrie that can be used as a Psalm refrain.
PfAS051I Lord Have Mercy (Brumm) A simple call and response Kyrie. Good for kids if you sing it with some energy.

Energetic Kyries
ATA 119 / SFFS 2127 Come and See / Kyrie (Hamm) The first verse of this is based on the Gospel of John, but the chorus is a simple and energetic Kyrie with a lovely descant that could be used on its own.

Recorded music Kyrie Eleison (Hildegard /
Braslavsky) A lovely recording of this very old Kyrie. Listen.

Songs and Hymns for Proper 12C / Ordinary 17C / Pentecost +9 (July 25th 2010)

Hosea 1:2-10
God is really angry and fed up with those Israelites, but there will be forgiveness.
Some Kyries would also fit well.
Tune In / NCYC '07: Forgive us now (Brown). “As we forgive may we be healed, as we reach out….” An excellent ballad seeking forgiveness in a sinful world. Lyrics and sound sample.
Iona (Enemy of Apathy) The love of God comes close (Iona) A good song of God's forgiveness; God is masculine (at least in the version I have). Simple melody. Lyrics (downloads a pdf). Very slow music sample.
FFS19 For the hurt I create (Murray) Beautiful tune and words. Might be a bit tricky.
FFS20 Forgive forgive us Holy God (Murray / Gibson) Simple tune and excellent words.
AoVNG55 / Taize God is forgiveness / Bog jest miloscia (Taize) "God is forgiveness, love and do not fear". A simple Taize chant which seems to suit this reading quite well. Sheet music, lyrics in many languages, sound samples.
Iona (Sent By the Lord) / MV066 Senzenina? / What have we done? (South African) This beautiful chant from South Africa asks the question that we often ask when things go wrong beyond belief. It's important to know what the song means when singing it. If you have some part-singers in your congregation, this would be particular good. It's good to let people ask this question. It is also on the soundtrack for "The Power of One" so you could also play the recorded music if appropriate. Free sheet music here (loads a pdf).

Psalm 85
God turns from hot anger and forgives. Lots of stuff about faithfulness and righteousness
AoVNG55 / Iona (WWHW) / G(II)74 / CP113 Come O Lord and Set Us Free (Ducote / Daigle/ Balhoff) Good simple, inclusive refrain with a pretty groovy cantor line. Lyrics, sheet music sample, sound sample (search for Daigle and click on the music symbol).
TiS 409 / AHB 322 / CH595 / UMH543 / VU202 / StJ / W&R328 / Cha250O Breath of life come sweeping through us (Elizabeth Porter Head) This is a really wonderful hymn with inclusive lyrics. Not all verses are in all hymnals. Lyrics.
CH198 / MV001 / GC753 / GC(II)741 / RS 846 Let Us Build a House / All are welcome (Haugen / TWO OAKS) This song has wonderful lyrics of hope for what a Christian community can be like, and a chorus that joyfully says “All are welcome, all are welcome, all are welcome in this place”. Sheet music sample. Sound sample. Lyrics (scroll down a little).
TiS 217 / AHB 148 / NCH43 / CH519 / UMH384 / VU333 / LBW315 / ELW631 / GA463 / HPP48 / HPSS376 / GC622 / GC(II)613 / CP485/6 / CP(E) 516 / W&R358 / Cha517 / Srce457 / URW100 Love divine all loves excelling A beautiful classic song and most hymnals use a very inclusive version of this hymn, even the AHB! Lyrics and sound sample.
MV222 May the peace of God be your peace (McLaren) A lovely benediction. Will need to be taught first.
CH659 / MV173 / StJ / W&R389 Put peace into each other’s hands (Kaan) Good words for communion; tune is quite simple and flows nicely. Lyrics (downloads a pdf).
TiS 690 / CH259 / StS115 Beauty for brokenness hope for despair (Kendrick) Themes of healing from personal and universal suffering and a rousing chorus. Lyrics.

Colossians 2:6-15, (16-19)
“Do not let anyone disqualify you”…. a tricky reading, but I liked that phrase.
Iona (Many & Great, There is One Among Us) /MV99 / GC(II)673 Stand O Stand Firm (Cameroons) I love having an excuse to sing this simple song from the Cameroons. Very easy for your congregation. You can make up cantor parts too “Oh my sisters…. Oh my brothers… Oh my children….” or you can name countries you are praying for in your intercessions. Sample sheet music, lyrics and Scottish sound sample.
VU457 / R183 / ELW522 / SFFS 2268 / HPP528 / GC(II)738 / CP061 / W&R695 As We Gather at Your Table (Daw) Beautiful, honest, encouraging words. Could be sung to HOLY MANNA, BEACH SPRING or NETTLETON, all very popular hymn tunes (did I mention that two of them are Sacred Harp tunes?), particularly good if you are celebrating communion this week. Lyrics.
Brunswick UCA New Songs Come out and Shout (Brown) I think this would work well with this reading; a good song of good news. Since this is new, it would be good to have the musicians present it to the congregation.
TiS 367 / AHB 287 / NCH242 / CH412 / UMH306 / VU159 / LBW135 / ELW366 / HPSS119 / GC446 / GC(II)459 / CP212 The strife is o'er the battle done There are two possible tunes for this hymn. I prefer to sing this hymn to the tune by James Minchin (THE STRIFE IS O’ER), which is found in the Australian Hymn Book, rather than the more traditional minstrellish VULPIUS. The newer tune is pretty groovy (I loved it as a kid!), and has lots and lots of alleluias. The words also vary a lot between hymnals. So, the best would be a combination of the TiS words and the AHB tune 287 (ii).
NCH438 / UMH377 / LBW346 / ELW785 / HPP390 / W&R428 / Cha561 / Srce784 When peace like a river (Spafford) An older American hymn. Hymnals vary in how old fashioned the lyrics are, and only some include the chorus. Lyrics and tune (really terrible old lyrics).

Luke 11:1-13
Jesus teaches The Lord’s Prayer; everyone who asks receives.
PH349 Let All Who Pray the Prayer Christ Taught (Troeger) I don't have a copy of this, but the lyrics look very good. Can anyone comment on this?
Tune In: Kingdom Come: A song about how things are not what we expect in God’s kingdom. Lots of words and good images including "there's no blacklist or admission fee" Sound sample and lyrics
GC(II)565 Lord increase our faith (Haas) Quite nice simple song of devotion and turning to God. Sound sample. Sheet music and lyrics.
ATFG575 / VU400 / WoV775 / ELW752 / SFFS 2193 / HPP403 / W&R489 / Cha305 / ZSS156 Lord Listen to Your Children Praying (Medema) A simple, repetitive song which would be fun to play around with - you could do it fast or slow. Sound sample and lyrics. A jazzier sound clip.
TiS 607 / AoV2-126 / ATN 95 / CH528 / VU684 / StJ / SFFS 2171 / HPP406 / G(II)524 / GC726 / GC(II)721 / CP(E)519/ W&R587 / Srce 462 Make me a channel of your peace (Temple) Youtube video of Sinead O'Connor singing it and lyrics and MIDI file.
URW453 Our Father in Heaven (Oppenheimer) A simple call and response arrangement of the more modern translation of the Lord's Prayer. I think this could work very well every time we say it.
URW454 Our Father in Heaven (Plainsong) I wish I had the guts to try to get my congregation to sing some Plainsong chant. This version has the modern translation.
Online resource Our Father above us and all around us (McLaren) Brian McLaren's simple way of chanting the Lord's prayer. Video.
GC(II)7 Our Father in Heaven (Lord's Prayer) (Haas) A simple and only slightly schmaltzy arrangement of the more modern translation. Sound sample. Sheet music.
Cha308 Our Father which art in heaven (West Indian) This is the one with a Jamaican "Hallowed be thy name" response to a called verse. Fun, but old school lyrics.
URW455 Holy one our only home, hallowed be your name (Mission) An excellent inclusive verson of the Lord's Prayer by a Native American woman. The tune and words are really beautiful.
TiS 465 / AHB 399 / Iona (SBL) / CH116 Our God in heaven / Father in heaven / Loving Creator grant to your children (Niles) I really like this hymn, especially the Philippino folk melody to which its set. Newer versions of the hymn from the Christian Conference of Asia have altered the lyrics to "Our God in heaven, Creator God" in the first verse. Other versions, such as CH4 have "Loving Creator, Parent and God".
Source Unknown Indwelling God infused throughout all existence (Fred F Keip) This is a rewritten Lord's prayer. It's a bit wordy, but quite helpful in reframing the Lord's Prayer with less baggage. Ed Murray who is part of the Singing the Lectionary Facebook group has written a good plainsong-like tune for this.
TiS 745 / AoV1-048 / ATN 34 / SiS96 / CH641 / UMH405 / VU356 / GA456 / HPP370 / PH333 / GC615 / GC(II)600 / CP458 / W&R349 / Cha354 / Srce593 Seek ye first the kingdom of God (Lafferty) A classic. Versions vary widely in the inclusiveness of their versions. A tip: GA and VU has made this gender inclusive for God by simply replacing "his righteousness" with "God's righteousness". Easy, really.
ATFG574 You are our Father you live in heaven (Warmun and Tiwi communities) Australian Aboriginal version of the Lord's Prayer.
TiS 526 / AHB 451 / CP(E) 505 Lord Jesus Christ you have come to us (Appleford) The second verse is particularly appropriate. I haven't sung this for ages; not sure why. Lyrics.

Songs and Hymns for Proper 11C / Ordinary 16C / Pentecost +8 (July 18th 2010)

Amos 8:1-12
Putting profits before honesty. Turning feasting to mourning, a famine of God’s word.
StS033 GA515 / G(II)516 / GC716 / GC(II)709 Let Justice Roll Like a River (Haugen) Verse 3 of this song is particularly appropriate for this passage. The song is quite simple, particularly if you use a soloist for the verses if this is new to you. Sound sample (I don't like this sample much) and sheet music sample and lyrics.
TiS 674 / Iona (Common Ground, Heaven Shall Not Wait) / CH253 Inspired by love and anger Powerful lyrics, simple English folk tune. Lyrics (search for "inspired")
TiS 689 / ATE 286 / GtB Lord hear my praying, listen to me / Sorrowing song. (Mann) Powerful words of prayer to a simple tune. Words are straightforward about asking difficult questions of God. Lyrics (loads a pdf).
ELW710 / CP575 Let streams of living justice (Whitla) Excellent words about social justice, set to a tune (THAXTED) based on Holst's Jupiter from The Planets. I don't think this is a great congregational tune; where it is well known it's associated with entirely different patriotic lyrics. Unfortunately, the words don't fit to many other tunes. Anyway, the lyrics are great, particularly the powerful 2nd verse which is not in Common Praise, apparently (not sure about ELW). Might be worth using as a poem / prayer. Lyrics (scroll all the way to the bottom).
NCH593 / UMH519 / LBW562 / ELW841 / HPP304 / PH563 / W&R729 / Cha631 / ZSS113 Lift every voice and sing (Johnson) This suggestion is for those readers in the USA, where this song speaks about liberation of those who were in slavery in that country. Lyrics and tune sample.
TiS 657 / CH263 / VU700 / AA50 / CP(E) 447 / Cha656 God of freedom God of justice (Murray / Guthrie Foote) Powerful lyrics. Can also be sung to PICARDY if you have trouble with the unfamiliar tune. Lyrics and midi.
Tune In / NCYC '07: Forgive us now (Brown). “As we forgive may we be healed, as we reach out….” An excellent ballad seeking forgiveness in a sinful world. Lyrics and sound sample.

Psalm 52
Lamentation for trusting in wealth rather than trusting God.
Songs for the Amos passage also fit here.
Tune In / NCYC '07: Forgive us now (Brown). “As we forgive may we be healed, as we reach out….” An excellent ballad seeking forgiveness in a sinful world. Lyrics and sound sample.
NCH Psalter Trust in the steadfast love of God for ever and ever (Marshall) A very simple refrain with a cantored or read Psalm.
AoV2-055 / G(II)513 / GC711 / GC(II)716 May we find richness / Harvest of Justice (Haas) Simple to sing, and good words. Sample sheet music, lyrics and a slo-o-ow tune sample.
Emergent Psalter I am like an olive tree (Everett) A modern, intuitive peaceful refrain. I just love this one.

Colossians 1:15-28
Some nice Christology “image of the invisible God, first-born of creation…. all things created through him and in him”. Reconciliation through Christ’s death, our lives as witness, Christ as Paul’s inspiration and energy.
W&R104 / URW102 Hidden Christ Alive for Ever (Wren) Wonderful and inspiring words of Christ in all things. Can be sung to HYFRYDOL or HOLY MANNA, so would be easily sung by most congregations. A good song for just after the sermon. Lyrics in this article (downloads a pdf) - search for "orbits" to find the lyrics.
TiS 688 Come to be our hope O Jesus (Marachin) This is a really fun Latin American song from the World Council of Churches Assembly in Canberra. It's not easy the first time, but once you've heard it, it's very catchy. The words are really excellent, despite a slightly clunky translation. It would be worth teaching to your congregation! We sang this a couple of times during Advent.
Brunswick UCA resource: Love is the Power (Anderson). Suggestion for the congregation at Brunswick as this is not published yet, but it is in our church folders. It’s a while since we've sung it, but it went down well last time. It's a little bit tricky.
AA036 Every day I will offer you (Murray) “Everyday, in your Spirit, I’ll find the love and energy”… Good song of commitment. Might be good as closing song. This is also in other books of songs by Shirley Murray.
TiS 617 / NCH413 / UMH517 / WoV736 / ELW626 / HPSS342 / W&R75 By gracious powers so wonderfully sheltered Wonderful words by Bonhoeffer. A range of tunes. The tunes BONHOEFFER (NCH) and O PERFECT LOVE work well. I'm not a big fan of the tune in TiS (HIGHWOOD). Lyrics. The 5th verse is omitted in some hymnals.
MV 145 / CP418 Draw the circle wide (Light) A great song about welcoming all people. “Christ the still point of the circle” fits well with the reading this week. Lyrics (downloads a Word document).
AoVK-28 / ATOK 376 Faith hope and love (Watts) This is so easy, and so cool. If you have some groovy musicians, this can even be a very funky rock song. Very easy, and great for kids and non-readers. I think I suggest this about once a month, which may be getting excessive.
TiS 691 Faith will not grow from words alone Excellent strong words of a questioning faith to a familiar hymn tune. Maybe I suggest this often too.
TiS 720 / AHB 295 / AoVK-85 / AoV2-046 / ATOK 319 / NCH236 / Iona (M&G, T1AU) / CH345 / VU958 / StJ / GA107 / SFFS 2026 / HPP571 / GC(II)261 / RS 396 / W&R5 / Cha41 / ZSS76 / URW370 Halle halle hallelujah (Trad Caribbean) I think this passage deserves a hearty Hallelujah and this is one of my favourites. Note that GA and CH have verses!

Luke 10:38-42
Martha and Mary
Taize / CP563 In God alone my soul can find rest and peace / Mon Ame Se Repose (Berthier) A very beautiful chant from Taize. Music and sound samples for practice here.
TiS 693 / AoV1-031 / GA212 Come as you are that's how I want you (Browne) This song is beautiful, gentle, simple, and very well known. Lyrics (search for "come as you are").
TiS 748 / GtB There once was a man as mean as could be (Hannah) Good song for kids and Vs 3 is great for this passage.
Iona (LFB) / G(II)503 / GC701 / RS818 God It Was who said to Abraham (Bell) Easy Celtic style tune. Good story words. Verse 4: Christ is was who said to Martha "Listen first, then make the tea!". Note that God is masculine; I don't know if John Bell has addressed that in more recent editions of Love From Below. Lyrics and sheet music. Slow sound sample.
Gospelling to the Beat One man was Peter he lived by the sea (Llewellyn) A simple kid's song "stop what you're doing and follow me"
Liturgy for the Whole Church p153 Martha and Mary (Bock) A dramatic reading for two women.

Songs and Hymns for Proper 10C / Ordinary 15C / Pentecost +7 (July 11th 2010)

Amos 7:7-17
Sometimes God leads us to speak the truth and that can get us in trouble.
NCH588 / StJ / WoV763 / ELW717 Let justice flow like streams (Parker Huber) Amos 7:7-9 Excellent words to the very familiar tune ST THOMAS. This must be the only hymn in existence with the words "plumb-line" in it. I would not have found this without WoV, Pastor Tim - Thank you! Lyrics (downloads a pdf of a pretty amazing service - lyrics are on p3)
AoV2-102 / GA509 Who will speak if we don't (Haugen) Excellent challenging words.
TiS 689 / ATE 286 / GtB Lord hear my praying, listen to me / Sorrowing song. (Mann) Powerful words of prayer to a simple tune. Words are straightforward about asking difficult questions of God. Lyrics (loads a pdf). This song will work for next week as well, so now is a good time to introduce it.
This song will work for next week as well, so now is a good time to introduce it.
WCC website: Hear the message we now are proclaiming / El mensaje que hoy proclamamos. This jubilant Colombian song of liberty and new life for the poor and suffering would fit well with this reading. Free sheet music!
Tune In / NCYC '07: Forgive us now (Brown). “As we forgive may we be healed, as we reach out….” An excellent ballad seeking forgiveness in a sinful world. Lyrics and sound sample. This song will work for next week as well, so now is a good time to introduce it.

Psalm 82
God as judge, desiring justice.
MV028 / StJ / FFS25 / GC(II)507 God of the Bible / Fresh as the morning (Murray) Good words, that seem to be full of sunshine, but also power. I particularly like the tune by Alonso in MV, as the chorus is really very wonderful. I think it's worth learning. I think this song would be a really good "fit" for our congregation. Lyrics, sheet music sample, sound sample.
Iona (M&G) / CH267 Blest be God blest be God for ever (Martinez / DANDASOY) Beautiful words to a beautiful, but tricky Philippino melody (unless you have a Philippino congregation, in which case it's just a familiar folk tune). This would be great to ask a small group to sing, if you have some good singers in your congregation. Works nicely with a guitar.t

Colossians 1:1-14
Thanks for the community, thanks to God for forgiveness of sins.
MV 145 / CP418 Draw the circle wide (Light) A great song about welcoming all people. “Let the dreams we dream be larger than we’ve ever dreamed before; let the dream of Christ be in us, open every door”. Lyrics (downloads a Word document).
Iona (Love From Below) / SFFS 2283 / GC(II)786 For All the Saints Who’ve Shown Your love (Bell) These beautiful lyrics are some of the best words giving thanks for the lives of others that I've come across. There are two tunes for this hymn. Love From Below uses the tune "ALL SAINTS" which is a nice tune, but not familiar, although not hard to learn. The Gather hymnals publish a slightly different version of the lyrics, sung to O WALY WALY which is "The water is wide", so much more familiar. Lyrics and sheet music sample. Sound sample.
TiS 549 / CH538 / VU430 / CP(E) 439 God be in my head and in my understanding (Davies) I like these words from the Book of Hours, but I have never been able to work out when you might use it in congregational worship. Perhaps sung just before the sermon? It's not a great congregational tune. If you use this song, please comment - either here, or in the Facebook group. Sheet music video of all parts while you listen to a beautiful choral version.
TiS 470 / CH742 / UMH708 / LBW26 / ELW264 / CP(E) 227 / W&R531 / Cha476 Rejoice in God’s saints today and all days! (Pratt Green) Great words about all the different saints and the importance of remembering them. Works well to the tune PADERBORN, but would be even simpler sung to LAUDATE DOMINUM which would be more familiar. Lyrics and some tune samples, or LAUDATE DOMINUM tune sample.
Tune In: Community (Brown) A song about being welcomed and part of a community. Sound sample and lyrics.
AoVK-28 / ATOK 376 Faith hope and love, this is what we long for (Watts) A groovy, easy, fun song. Great for kids and youth.
NCH398 / MV044 / W&R599 Shadow and Substance (Damon) Good clear words of being Christ's community in all our diversity. A simple tune. Lyrics (downloads a pdf).

Luke 10:25-37
Love your neighbour, love God. The Good Samaritan.
TiS 650 / AoV2-169 / ATA 191 / CH694 / VU595 / ELW659 / AA08 / SFFS 2222 / HPP442 / G(II)476 / GC683 / GC(II)661 Brother, sister, let me serve you. I think you all know this one.
NCH590 / CH621 Spirit of Jesus, if I love my neighbour. Challenging words of offering help from a position of privilege and seeking to be set free from the entrapment of possessions “If I am hugging safety or possessions, uncurl my spirit as your love prevails, to join my neighbours, work for liberation, and find my freedom at the mark of nails”. Could also be sung to the tune PERFECT LOVE if your congregation woudl have trouble with the newer tune.
NCH 541 They asked “Who’s my neigbor and whom should I love?” Great words from Jan Wesson, and a simply folkish tune that’s a bit like Sydney Carter’s hymn tunes. Challenging words that pick up the good Samaritan reading, but also very appropriate for this week’s reading.
ATW 498 / Iona (T1AU) / MV 196 We will take what you offer. An excellent simple short song that works well either as an upbeat chorus or as a reflective chant. "We will take what you offer. We will live by your word. We will love one another. And be fed by you Lord". Sound sample here.
ATOK 390 Put on love every day, never hide your love away. A groovy song for kids!
TiS 640 / AHB 561 / ATE 310 / NCH498 / UMH432 / VU593 / WoV765 / ELW708 / HPP446 / HPPS367 / G(II)296 / GC409 / GC(II)429 Kneels at the feet of his friends / Jesu, Jesu, Fill us with your love.
TiS 629 / AHB 558 / AoV2-136 / ATA 197 / CH544 / VU600 When I needed a neighbor were you there (Carter) A classic folk church song. Well known and fits well with this theme. My son has been singing this a lot since we last sang it. Obviously it's catchy. "And the creed and the colour and the name won't matter"... Lyrics.
TiS 681 Lord let me see see more and more (Langmead) An excellent song - kind of long with 5 verses, but very simple lyrics on some quite tricky themes. The tune is very natural to sing as well. Free sheet music. Conditions of use and more songs by Ross Langmead.
ATN 18 / NCH552 From the crush of wealth and power (Gibbons) Good words about stepping out with courage to help those in pain and "bind all their wounds again". Well known tune (BRIDEGROOM). Lyrics (scroll down).
CH115 / MV089 / Iona (Love from Below)
Love is the touch of intangible joy (Robertson / Bell) Great words and a simple tune. "God is where love is, for love is of God". Lyrics here (loads a pdf).
R137 / ELW341 / SFFS 2187 / G(II)549 / GC759 / GC(II)752 / W&R627 / Cha471 Now it is evening / At evening (Pratt Green) A song of justice and caring for others who are lonely, hungry in the city. The set tune is really good and simple, but it can also be sung to BUNESSAN. Mostly makes sense for evening services only, but maybe it could work in the morning…?
CH258 / UMH434 / VU702 / StJ / R249 / ELW725 / PH407 W&R624 Cha662 SgTJ1027 When the hungry who have nothing share with strangers / Cuando el Pobre / When the poor ones (Olivar / Manzano) Lk Wow… This song has a beautiful and interesting (but easy to sing) tune and really moving words ending with the phrase "God goes with us on the pathways of our lives" or "Then we know that God still goes that road with us" in each verse. I prefer the English translation in Church Hymnary (Bringle). Very highly recommended. Lyrics in English, Spanish and chords. Slightly odd, but helpful sound sample.
Online resource The Good Samaritan (Dietrich) A funny song for kids (and adults!) to listen to with a cool video.

Songs and Hymns for Proper 9C / Ordinary 14C / Pentecost +6 (July 4th 2010)

2 Kings 5:1-14
Naaman’s healing; he wished it needed something special but really it was very simple.TiS 638 / NCH175 / CH717 / UMH265 / LBW380 / ELW675 / PH380 / Cha503 / CP291 / CP(E) 346 / W&R638 O Christ the healer we have come Beautiful words and simple to sing. TiS 182 / AoV2-010 / NCH11 / CH134 / VU268 / SFFS 2047 / HPP13 / CP395 Bring many names beautiful and good (Wren) This is a beautiful song, but it's very long (especially if sung too slowly). Try singing one verse unison, then one women, one men, then all together again, to keep people interested in what they are singing. Lyrics.

Psalm 30
God heals. Turns mourning into dancing. Anger is but for a moment; Weeping may linger, but joy comes in the morning.
PH181 Come Sing to God O Living Saints (Anderson / ELLACOMBE) Good, simple, inclusive, humble and realistic words based specifically on this Psalm. Sung to a well known hymn tune (I sing the mighty power of God). Many congregations choose to sing only the first and last verses; the middle two are much more challenging. Lyrics for the first and last verse (search for “come sing”).
Iona (There is one among us) Lord you can turn all mourning into dancing An excellent simple refrain from John Bell “Lord you can turn all mourning into dancing, evenings of grief to mornings of great joy”Tune In: You in all our worries / All will finish well “In this world where injustice reigns, you are in the midst of pain”. Excellent words of reassurance in a difficult world. Sound sample, lyrics and songbook here.
TiS 647 / AoV2-012 / ATN 25 Comfort, comfort all my people (Mann) Easy to sing, beautiful lyrics. Chorus is“Comfort, comfort all my people, with the comfort of my word. Speak ye tender to my people, all your sins are taken away”. Lyrics, mp3 sample.
TiS 670 / AoVK-138 / ATE 258 / CH692 Jesus put this song into our hearts (Kendrick) A fun Yiddish tune that gets even more fun if you get faster and faster as you go. Try teaching your congregation a simple side to side “dance” step. If you teach them and make it clear that it’s okay, you’ll be surprised how many people dance to God. Great for kids, too.
AoVK-125 / ATW 489 Turn our sadness upside down (Leigh Newton) Good for kids, and adults too. Simple tune, but not so simple that it’s boring. Lyrics (search in the page for "sadness").
TiS 242 / AHB 183 / AoV1-018 / ATN 27 / CH404 / UMH261 / VU352 / HPP163 / PH302 / G(II)481 / GC708 / GC(II)689 / CP(E) 468 / W&R118 I danced in the morning / Lord of the Dance (Carter / SIMPLE GIFTS). Lyrics and tune sample.

Sheet music sample. Sound sample (click on the play button).
MV187 We give our thanks / Reamo leboga (Traditional Botswana) A great song to sing for the offering. Sound sample (scroll to the 3rd album). We usually sing it much more quickly than this sample.
ATE 253 He turned my mourning into dancing This is not inclusive, but some versions change the lyrics to make it addressed to God “You turned my morning into dancing” which is better.
Tune In: You in all our worries / All will finish well “In this world where injustice reigns, you are in the midst of pain”. Excellent words of reassurance in a difficult world. Sound sample, lyrics and songbook.
NCH85 I woke up this morning with my mind set on Jesus A joyful and very simple freedom song. Many versions with lots of different words out there. Youtube video. Lyrics. Tacky midi sample.

Galatians 6:(1-6), 7-16
Hmmmm…. very Pauline… if you sow to to the Spirit, you will reap eternal life – don’t give up!
TiS 422 / CH594 / CP(E) 179 Come Holy Spirit come inflame our souls with love (Forster / DIADEMATA) Excellent words to a well known hymn tune. It is not gender-inclusive for God.
TiS 672 / GA554 Lord of earth and all creation (Thwaites) Good Australian words. Two possible tunes. The newer tune is very good, but if your congregation can't do a new tune this week, it can also be sung to WESTMINSTER ABBEY which is very well known. Lyrics (split by words of mission and blessing).
UMH581 / LBW423 / ELW712 / PH427 / GC681 / GC(II)668 / Cha461 / CP585 / W&R575 / URW204 Lord Whose Love in Humble Service / Lord whose love through humble service (Bayly) Good solid words of mission to a familiar tune (IN BABILONE or BEACH SPRING). Lyrics and tune sample.
TiS 630 / AHB 554 The law of Christ alone can make us free Great words by Australian poet James McAuley; not gender inclusive for God. The tune may be tricky if not familiar, so you may need to introduce the melody to your congregation.
TiS 421 Where the Spirit is there's freedom (Harling) Fun and good. Lyrics.

Luke 10:1-11, 16-20
The 70 sent out with nothing, to be welcomed and to heal. Rejoice that your name is written in heaven.
MV140 As long as we follow / Na nzela na lola (Kabemba) A simple song from the Congo. "As long as we hope there is a future for creation. We know this, we know this, God's reign will surely come". Youtube video of a pretty cool church choir.
ATOK 348 / Iona (HSNW) / G(II)496 / GC692 / GC(II)697 Come with me / Sing hey for the carpenter (Iona) Excellent. I love this one. Very joyous, and a big favourite in our congregation. Lyrics. I think its strange that some have changed it to "sing yes for the carpenter".
TiS 409 / AHB 322 / CH595 / UMH543 / VU202 / StJ / Cha250 O Breath of life come sweeping through us (Elizabeth Porter Head)
Iona (Heaven Shall Not Wait) When our Lord walked the earth (Bell / PERSONENT HODIE) Familiar and easy tune, excellent words. Chorus is “Power to speak and heal, grace to know what’s real, wisdom, insight and faith, grace and understanding”

It's also very adaptable and works well with any instruments. “Loaves abound!”. lyrics and slighty tacky midi sample here.
Tune in: We are the dream that's longing / Jesus is waiting. An honest catchy rock song about our hesitation to follow and Jesus not only waiting, but continuing to work and change the world. A good sending-out song. Sound sample, lyrics and songbook available here.

Songs and Hymns for Proper 8C / Ordinary 13C / Pentecost +5 (June 27th 2010)

2 Kings 2:1-2, 6-14
Elijah taken up by a chariot, Elisha’s devotion and inheritance of the Spirit of God
Litury for the whole church p140 and p142 Elijah passes his mantle (Bock) A dramatic reading for three readers and a skit for two people with a narrator based on this reading.
AoV2-061 / ATE 249 As a dream receive your hist'ry (Tanner) A big favourite by a South Australian guy. There are actions too! I think this would work well with this reading if you think about the inheritance that we also receive from our forerunners in the faith. Lyrics here.
New Brunswick UC songs In Spirit we rise (Anderson) It would be great to sing this song about God's spirit working in and through us and good to do it again soon before the congregation forgets it. Sorry, this isn't available yet online or in a songbook.
TiS 711 / ATOK 334 / Iona (M&G) / VU383 / SFFS 2124 / G(II)330 Come O Holy Spirit / Wa Wa Wa Emimimo (Nigeria) This song is just fun. And very easy. Please try to sing it in its original language (Yoruba), it sounds a bit inane in English and it’s not hard!! Encourage your congregation to dance a simple side-to-side step to this; they will enjoy it even more. If we can’t go a little crazy on Pentecost, what hope is there for us, really? A good song to help us remember that our faith is global, and to think of the church and all people in Africa. There is a sample here (it's very white, and mostly in English, but it's all I could find!)
TiS 398 / AHB 310 / AoV1-118 / NCH289 / CH489 / UMH475 / VU367 / GA375 / LBW508 / ELW804 / HPSS313 / GC465 / GC(II)471 / RS617 / CP645 / CP(E) 175 / W&R330 / Cha582 / Srce100
Come down O Love divine (Down Ampney/Vaughan Williams) Old fashioned, but still inclusive and very well known. Words and tune here. Hymnals vary a lot in the lyrics with respect to thees and thys and words like "vesture".
TiS 422 / CH594 / CP(E) 179 Come Holy Spirit come inflame our souls with love (Forster / DIADEMATA) Excellent words to a well known hymn tune. Some small word substitutions are needed to make it gender inclusive for God.
TiS 419 / AHB 596 / NCH270 / CH592 / UMH544 / VU205 / WoV685 / ELW403 / HPP222 / HPSS314 / CP635 / CP(E) 185 / W&R327 / Cha245 Like the murmur of the dove's song Excellent words and a simple tune. Each verse ends with "Come holy spirit, come" . Lyrics and organ sample here.
TiS 409 / AHB 322 / CH595 / UMH543 / VU202 / StJ / Cha250
O Breath of life come sweeping through us (Elizabeth Porter Head)
NCH271 / UMH538 / VU196 / HPSS131 / CP249 / W&R333
Wind who makes all winds blow Excellent words. Familiar tune (ABERYSTWYTH).
Blow through me Breath of God (Miriam Therese Winter). I’m not sure of the source of this beautiful chant, but we have some photocopies of this at church and it’s very beautiful. It takes a few listens for the congregation to pick it up, or you could ask the musicians to play it as a prayer for the congregation. "Like a pipe, like a flute, like a reed making melody". This can be found in "Songlines, Hymns, Songs, Rounds and Refrains for Prayer and Praise,Crossroad, New York, 1996" or "Womantalk Woman Prayer" (1987)
Taize / MV075 Holy Spirit, Come to Us (tui amoris ignem) a joyful chant, no cantor required. Music and lyrics in many languages here. While listed here in Latin, it also sounds very beautiful in English.
Iona / GA377 Come Holy Spirit (Bell) A simple call and response chant.
GA183 Come Holy Spirit the spirit of Wisdom (Willcock) I just found this song, and it's really great! It's in 7/8 so has a real drive to it, and the words are also excellent about God-with-us and the coming of the Spirit of justice. I think it would really suit many congregations - even though it's in 7/8 it's not hard.

Psalm 77:1-2, 11-20
God hears us in our trouble, even though God has the power over the seas and the wind
VU791
God bend your ear and hear my prayer (Honore) A lovely simple and intuitive chant with an inclusive, responsive reading of this Psalm. Highly recommended.
Iona (LFB) Listen Lord (Iona / Bell) Beautiful chant-like chorus, can be used on its own or as a response, or used with the verses. Good to use for the intercessions.
TiS 741 / AoV1-017 / ATE 282 / LBW368 / ELW407 / GA431 / SFFS 2200 / G(II)410 / GC586 / GC(II)566 / Taize / W&R484 / Srce519 O Lord hear my prayer (Berthier) A simple and very well known Taize chant.
Taize / TiS 739 / AoV2-041 / ATOK 404 / VU290 / GA269 / SFFS 2054 / G(II)451 / GC639 / GC(II)626 / CP568 / W&R421 Nothing Can Trouble / Nada te turbe (Berthier) Excellent and quite well known Taize chant. Spanish lyrics are not too hard for non-Spanish speakers. Sheet music, sound samples, lyrics and translations.
CH570 / UMH512 / W&R495 When the storms of life are raging (stand by me) (Tindley) A good gospel song; one of those ones that clicks instantly. "God who rules the wind and water, stand by me". Hymnals have a range of translations, and it's public domain so you can make up verses too. For a more old-style version, lyrics are here.
Family resource I called to God for help (Whelan) My son Daniel (age 6) wrote his first song last week. It's about lightning hitting a tree, Daniel calling for help, and God helping when needed. A universal theme, I guess. Really, I'm just writing this for fun.

Galatians 5:1, 13-25

Freedom and persistence. Works of the Flesh vs. Fruits of the Spirit. Triumph of the Spirit; being good neighbours.
Melody line sheet music, lyrics and Scottish sound sample here (search for Stand Firm). Free sheet music from the World Council of Churches.
AoV1-061 / ATOK 355 / SFFS 2194 / G(II)521 / GC723 / GC(II)707 / ZSS110 / SgTJ1035 Freedom is coming Excellent and lots of fun, especially if you have a keen African-style drummer in your congregation. It's really worth teaching the parts to your congregation before the service. It can get a bit boring if the congregation don't know they get to listen to the other parts! Partial sheet music, sound sample (search for Freedom)
TiS 613 / ATOK 405 / NCH211 / CH166 / LBW469 / ELW765 / SFFS 2197 / HPP265 / GC578/ GC(II)560 / CP506 / CP(E)507 / W&R469 / URW179 Lord of all hopefulness Lord of all joy Excellent straightforward Irish tune (Slane), and beautiful words. Would be a good choice for the final song. Lyrics. Tune sample.
CH611 Holy Spirit fill our hearts (Unknown) A lovely simple song. Good to teach to kids in Sunday School perhaps.
GtB God is love and love is giving (Langmead) A simple kids' song about God's love. A round. We sang this a few months ago, but not since. It would be good to repeat it.
TiS 640 / AHB 561 / ATE 310 / NCH498 / UMH432 / VU593 / WoV765 / ELW708 / HPP446 / HPSS367 / G(II)296 / GC409 / GC(II)429 / CP504 Jesu Jesu fill us with your love / Kneels at the feet of his friends A very well known classic.
NCH401 / W&R388 O god in whom all life begins (Daw) Excellent words of living as a community of faith. Sung to a simple English melody.
AA123 / VU361 Small things count (Murray / Bray) Good simple morality song for kids. Easy to sing.
Unknown source But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy and peace (Unknown) This is a simple chorus I still remember from Holiday Club at the Lutheran church in the next town when I was in Primary School. It's probably from Scripture in Song, but I don't know. I'd love to know if anyone knows where I can track it down - not that you'd need the sheet music, really.
NCH286 / ATE 218 / VU375 / WoV684 / ELW396 / HPP239 / W&R326 Spirit spirit of gentleness (Manley) Lovely, gentle song. Very easy to sing, but can get slow and ponderous if you're not careful. Lyrics and kind of odd sound sample.
ATA 184 Spring follows winter (love is the law) (Mann) Lovely words to a familiar traditional English (?) melody. Mostly inclusive.
GGives2 The spirit produces love (Tolquhurst) A nice short boppy kids song directly quoting this passage.
ATA 202 / GGives1 We're gonna move when the Spirit says move (Boucher) Fun song. There's a lot of kid's songs for this passages (note that none of them list the "Works of the Flesh").

Luke 9:51-62
It's not easy to follow Christ; you can't put it off.
CH195 / AA061 Here to the house of God we come (Murray / Gibson) Good honest words and a simple, but unusual tune.
TIS 624 / W&R453 Christ be my leader by night as by day. Excellent words of following Christ in times of struggle to a traditional Scottish melody. Lyrics
ATOK 413 / Iona (HSNW) / CH533 / VU567 / StS039 / R276 / ELW798 / GA502 / SFFS 2130 / HPP317 / G(II)510 / GC700 / GC(II)687 / CP430 / CP(E) 622 / W&R350 / URW060 Will you come and follow me / The Summons (Iona / KELVINGROVE) A classic, but it has been overdone sometimes. Don't sing it too slowly or it really drags and takes forever!
TiS 686 / ATE 292 Lord Jesus we belong to you / Because we bear your name (Robin Mann). A straightforward and practical song asking God to help us to follow Christ well, with a refrain of "because we bear your name". Lyrics.
TiS 561 / AHB 467 / NCH494 / CH535 / CP(E) 621 Who would true valor see / valour see (Bunyan) A lovely old hymn, with old-world imagery. I think it still works OK. TiS and NCH have inclusive language throughout. CH and CP(E) do not have inclusive language, even for humanity. I really like the tune MONK'S GATE. Particularly nice with light instrumentation. A violin / flute and a drum may be all you need for this. Inclusive lyrics (loads a Word document).
