Songs and Hymns for Maundy Thursday (April 1st 2010

Exodus 12:1-4, (5-10), 11-14
The sacrifice and eating of the Passover lamb
AoV1-196 / GC171 / GC(II)152 / RS 329 Jesus, Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) from Haugen’s Mass of Creation. My favourite “Jesus Lamb of God”, I think. Sheet music sample and (slow) sound sample here.
GC213 / GC(II)319 / RS 469 / URW414 Jesus Lamb of God from Joncas’ Psallite Mass. Okay, this one is my favourite too, but I think I like it twice the speed of the sample at Hymnprint.net. Sheet music sample and (slow) sound sample here.
Sing Alleluia Jesus Lamb of God This might be written by Betty Polkinghorne. A very melodic and lovely Agnus Dei. I’m quite sure this is in the Sing Alleluia book, but I’m not sure where else. This probably isn't very helpful, but I will try to track this song down.
GC(II)174 Jesus Lamb of God (Agnus Dei) (Proulx) A simple chant. Cantor and response. Sound sample (slow). Sheet music.
TiS 545 / Iona (LFB) / CH676 / VU482 Shout for joy! The Lord has let us feast. A very joyous communion song. Lyrics can be viewed here.
Worldmaking.net O Christ, Lamb of God An updated Kyrie. Lyrics and sound sample here.

Psalm 116:1-2, 12-19
A vow to the Lord, and lifting the cup of salvation…?
GC109 I Will Walk in the Presence of God (Daigle) A simple lilting refrain. Inclusive verses. This could maybe be used as a chant on its own.
TiS 71 / VU617 / HPSS362 / G(II)97 / GC108 I will walk in the presence of the Lord (Proulx) A beautiful cantored Psalm. The refrain is very simple. Doesn’t make sense without the cantor.
TiS 741 / AoV1-017 / ATE 282 / LBW368 / ELW407 / GA431 / SFFS 2200 / G(II)410 / GC586 / GC(II)566 / Taize / W&R484 / Srce519 / URW390 O Lord hear my prayer (Berthier) A simple and very well known Taize chant.

1 Corinthians 11:23-26, John 13:1-17, 31b-35
The words of institution; You might also like to look at the Communion songs page.
NCH344 / Iona (Enemy of Apathy) / GA385 / G(II)611 The time was early evening (Bell) Great words to a familiar Celtic folk tune. We sing this one often on Maundy Thursday. "Oh the food comes from the baker, the drink comes from the vine..." Lyrics.
TiS 538 / AoV2-093 Feed us now Bread of life (Mann) One of my favourite communion songs. Simple to sing, and beautiful simple theology. “Piece of bread, cup of wine, Lord this food is good”. Lyrics can be found here (search for "feed us now"). I love how the liturgy in the link intersperses the words of institution with the singing of the song. I think it's so great that there are so many orders of worship on the Internet!
TiS 707 / Iona (Common Ground, LFB) Bread is blessed and broken (GRACE IN ESSENCE) Very simple. Good for distribution of communion. Lyrics can be found here.
SFFS 2261 Life-Giving Bread as our hearts are transformed (Manolo) Simple chant
ELW466 / FFS38 / SFFS 2255 In the Singing in the silence (Murray) Lovely words, simple tune.
TiS 536 / AHB 453 / VU130 / HPSS094 / W&R275 / Cha385 An upper room did our Lord prepare (O Waly Waly) I really love this song. Perhaps this is strange, but I used to sing this to put my baby to sleep when I ran out of verses of the traditional words to this tune.
TiS 357 / ATA 147 When his time was over the palms lay where they fell Beautiful and mournful.
TiS 640 / AHB 561 / ATE 310 / NCH498 / UMH432 / VU593 / WoV765 / ELW708 / HPP446 / HPSS367 / G(II)296 / GC409 / GC(II)429 / CP504 Jesu Jesu fill us with your love / Kneels at the feet of his friends
Brunswick Uniting Church folders Harvest our love (Brown). This song is just perfect for every communion service ever.
Linnea Good Psalm 166 is particularly beautiful and simple “I love you God; I know you listen. You listened on the day I cried. When I called out to you in anguish, you were my presence and my guide”.
TiS 737 / Iona (Common Ground, HSNW, T1AU) Lord Jesus Christ lover of all (Bell) I don't know why this chant works so well for Maundy Thursday, but it does. Note that some versions (T1AU at least) has a beautiful 4 part harmony arrangement with excellent moving parts in the lower registers.
ATA 135 / VU132 Bitter was the night (Carter) Lyrics based on Peter's denial of Christ. Lyrics (scroll down).
Iona (T1AU) / Cha430 Lo I Am With You to the end of the world (Iona / Bell) Simple repetitive verses, in a nice minor key. Sound sample.
ATW 472 As we take this bread (Dyson) A lovely simple communion chant.
ATOK 397 / Iona (LFB) / CH658 / VU462 / CP610 / Cha391 Before I take the body of my Lord / These I lay down A pre-communion confession. Lovely tune which is easy to sing. Lyrics.
TiS 707 / Iona (Common Ground, LFB) Bread is blessed and broken (GRACE IN ESSENCE) Very simple. Good for distribution of communion. Lyrics can be found here.
TiS 714 / AoV1-125 /ATE 270 / CH661 / UMH628 / VU466 / WoV709 / ELW472 / GA205 / G(II)588 / GC838 / GC(II)806 / RS928 / CP063 / W&R697 / Cha414 Eat this bread drink this cup (Batastini / Taize) Excellent, particularly if you have a capable cantor. Some resources say "Come to him and never be hungry", but that can easily be changed to "come to me / trust in me".
ATW 478 / Iona (T1AU) / CH799 / URW420 This is the body of Christ (Bell) A very simple and gentle chant for distribution of communion "This is the body of Christ, broken that we may be whole; This cup, as promised by God, true to God's word, cradles our Lord: food for the good of the soul." Note, I did a sneaky little lyric change there... see if you can find it.

Communion / Eucharist hymns

Songs of preparation:
Tune In / NCYC 2009:
God has laid a feasting table / Invitation (Whelan). Feminine imagery of God gathering her guests to a feasting table. Fun Cuban rhythm. Sample and songbook here.
Tune In II Harvest our love (Brown) Let's not just talk about harvesting food, but offer God our lives as well. This song was written after Tune In was published, so only available at Brunswick Uniting so far.
NCH335 Come gather in this special place (Kirkland / Porter) Lovely words to a sort of minstrelly sort of sacred harp style hymn tune. I love the line "There's room for thousands side by side".
ATW 475 / NCYC'01 / SP&P008 Come to the banquet there’s a place for you. An excellent song by Melbourne singer and songwriter Faye White. "Though you maybe have no money, though you maybe feel unworthy, in your strength and in your weakness you are welcome, come."
SFFS 2233 This, this is where children belong (Ritchie) A simple song about the inclusion of children in the church. It would be great to sing this at a baptism, or during communion as the kids come back in. In our church, the kids go out for Sunday School and come back in at communion - it would be great to welcome them with this song.
ATN 77 / G(II)542 / GC749 O Welcome All You Noble Saints of Old / In Christ There Is a Table Set for All We often sing "We and God at Table are sat down" instead of the original "God and man at table are sat down" from ATN 77, however, the Gather hymnals use "In Christ there is a table set for all" which I also really like! Good for celebration of communion Lyrics, sample sheet music, tune sample (search for "table set for all").
NCH343 Jesus took the bread (Duck) Good communion hymn, particularly focused on the actions of Jesus at the first communion.
AoV1-074 Come To The Water (Andersen) A beautiful paraphrase of this reading. Strongly recommended. Familiar to many, but easy to sing if not.
Iona (Love and Anger) / CH763 / MV193 God bless to us our bread (Traditional Argentinian) A lovely simple grace for meals and for communion. Good if you will be sharing a meal as a community. More Voices has Spanish and French lyrics as well as English. "God bless to us our bread, and give bread to all those who are hungry, and hunger for justice to those who are fed. God bless to us our bread". This is one of our family's regular table graces!
TiS 516 / AHB 438 / NCH336 / CH664 / UMH623 / VU459 / HPP521 / HPSS520 / CP(E) 304 / Cha416 Here O my Lord I see thee face to face / Here gracious Lord, we see you face to face (Bonar) I prefer the more chant-like setting of this (Adoro to Devote), but I know the hymn-like tune (ST AGNES) is probably more familiar. Some translations are more inclusive than others. Best if you are serving communion during your service.
AoV1-071 / GC(II)742 Gather Your People (Hurd) Excellent words and eucharistic theology. Good if you are celebrating communion this week. Lyrics, sheet music and sound sample.
AoV1-129 / CH665 / UMH62o / VU467 / ELW701 / HPP525 / G(II)599 / GC830 / GC(II)813 One bread, one body. A classic. Don't play it too slow or it takes forever!! Particularly appropriate if you are celebrating communion.
TiS 477 / Iona (LFB, Common Ground) / CH510 / StJ Jesus calls us here to meet him. Good words and a rollicking or gentle Celtic tune (depending on how you play it!). Lyrics. 4th verse (not in TiS, but in Iona sources) leads to communion.
TiS 259 / Iona (Love From Below) Among us and before us Lord you stand (Bell). Good words for an inclusive communion. The set tune (GATEHOUSE) will need to be taught. It can also be sung to SURSUM CORDA. Lyrics (downloads a word document).
SFFS 2261 Life-Giving Bread as our hearts are transformed (Manolo) Simple chant

ATOK 397 / Iona (LFB) / CH658 / VU462 / CP610 / Cha391 Before I take the body of my Lord / These I lay down A pre-communion confession. Lovely tune which is easy to sing. Lyrics.
AA039 / GA192 / In Every Corner Sing For the bread and wine and blessing (Murray) Very straightforward tune. Good eucharist song. Really good song of healing.
VU456 / AA100 / HPSS515 Now to your table spread (Murray) A communion hymn that recognises global faith and global responsibility. Sung to the familiar tune LOVE UNKNOWN
VU460 / R181 / ELW461 / SFFS 2126 / G(II)589 / GC820 / GC(II)817 / RS 845 / Cha419 All who hunger gather gladly (Dunstan) Words are great; I would sing it to the tune "holy manna".
G(3)948 At the Table of Jesus (Alonso) A friendly, simple communion song (verses and chorus) to the tune of 'Tis a gift to be simple. Lyrics and lead sheet. Sound sample.
MV197 Bread of life broken and shared (Gagnon) Quite nice verses and catchy chorus, which refers to this, and other famous bread-like readings. For communion.
AoV1-027 / AoVK-102 / GA200 / G(II)613 / GC847 / GC(II)807 / G(3)924 / Lau473 We come to share our story / Song of the Body of Christ (Haas) Simple tune and good words "We come to share our story, we come to break the bread, we come to know our rising From the dead". Sung to a traditional Hawai'ian tune.

To bless the elements as they are brought forward:
WoV759 / ELW691 / Cha379 Accept O God the gifts we bring (Bergeron Folkemer) offertory A good song for bringing forward the elements before communion / during the offering; sung to a lovely folk tune (BARBARA ALLEN)

For the distribution:
ATW 478 / Iona (T1AU) / CH799 This is the body of Christ (Bell) A very simple and gentle chant for distribution of communion "This is the body of Christ, broken that we may be whole; This cup, as promised by God, true to His word, cradles our Lord: food for the good of the soul." Not inclusive language.
ATW 472 As we take this bread (Dyson) A lovely simple communion chant.
TiS 707 / Iona (Common Ground, LFB) Bread is blessed and broken (GRACE IN ESSENCE) Very simple. Good for distribution of communion. Lyrics can be found here.

Some resources say "Come to him and never be hungry", but that can easily be changed to "come to me / trust in me".
TiS 511 / AHB 433 / AoV2-098 / NCH330 / UMH618 / VU480 / LBW212 / ELW471 / HPP524 / HPSS513 / GC832 / GC(II)832 / W&R699 / Cha425 Let us break bread together on our knees / with the Lord (Trad/US Folk) A good one for people to join in on without needing to look at lyric sheets or projections.
ATW 473 Bread for the world a world of hunger (Farrell) Very nice words. Tune a bit schmaltzy, but the words save it. A bit gutsy really. Good for a soloist during distribution of communion.

After communion
TiS 531 / VU481 / ELW330 / NCH76 / HPP578 Sent forth by God’s blessing (particularly if you celebrate communion/eucharist this week). Note that not all hymnals are gender inclusive for God on this one. NCH is. “The seed of God’s teaching, our hungry souls reaching, shall blossom in action for all humankind”… Lyrics and electronic tune here.
AoV1-185 / GA202 Take of my bread and eat / Our Supper Invitation (Bates) lovely communion song. Very easy to sing, and good words. "Take of my bread and eat, drink my new wine, Take of my life and live, branch of my vine".
ATA 170 Take this bread I give to you (McGuire) A nice simple communion song.
GA322 / G(II)299 / GC(II)433 We Remember One Who Loved Us (Joncas) Very nice words and a soothing simple melody. "We remember one who loved us well, shared our life, it's joy and sorrow"

TiS 530 / AHB 450 / CH675 / UMH634 / VU483 / CP(E) 315 / W&R715 Now let us from this table rise (Kaan) Good words to sing after communion. It's largely inclusive, apart from a male Christ which is not too bothersome. I prefer it to NIAGARA but other sources have different tunes.
URW126 Give thanks to the Source (Duck) communion; trinity Excellent words to a lovely lilting tune.
W&R704 / URW130 We Meet as Friends at Table (Wren) Excellent words of community. Sung to a familiar tune (MERLE'S TUNE). This hymn could be sung partly before distribution and sing the final two verses after communion. "With food and drink for sharing the table soon is spread, the freedom-meal of Jesus is crowned with wine and bread, and all, without exception, may eat, and speak, and stay, for this is Christ's own table, where none is turned away."
