Amos 8:1-12
Putting profits before honesty. Turning feasting to mourning, a famine of God’s word.
StS033 GA515 / G(II)516 / GC716 / GC(II)709 Let Justice Roll Like a River (Haugen) Verse 3 of this song is particularly appropriate for this passage. The song is quite simple, particularly if you use a soloist for the verses if this is new to you. Sound sample (I don't like this sample much) and sheet music sample and lyrics.
TiS 674 / Iona (Common Ground, Heaven Shall Not Wait) / CH253 Inspired by love and anger Powerful lyrics, simple English folk tune. Lyrics (search for "inspired")
TiS 689 / ATE 286 / GtB Lord hear my praying, listen to me / Sorrowing song. (Mann) Powerful words of prayer to a simple tune. Words are straightforward about asking difficult questions of God. Lyrics (loads a pdf).
ELW710 / CP575 Let streams of living justice (Whitla) Excellent words about social justice, set to a tune (THAXTED) based on Holst's Jupiter from The Planets. I don't think this is a great congregational tune; where it is well known it's associated with entirely different patriotic lyrics. Unfortunately, the words don't fit to many other tunes. Anyway, the lyrics are great, particularly the powerful 2nd verse which is not in Common Praise, apparently (not sure about ELW). Might be worth using as a poem / prayer. Lyrics (scroll all the way to the bottom).
NCH593 / UMH519 / LBW562 / ELW841 / HPP304 / PH563 / W&R729 / Cha631 / ZSS113 Lift every voice and sing (Johnson) This suggestion is for those readers in the USA, where this song speaks about liberation of those who were in slavery in that country. Lyrics and tune sample.
TiS 657 / CH263 / VU700 / AA50 / CP(E) 447 / Cha656 God of freedom God of justice (Murray / Guthrie Foote) Powerful lyrics. Can also be sung to PICARDY if you have trouble with the unfamiliar tune. Lyrics and midi.
Tune In / NCYC '07: Forgive us now (Brown). “As we forgive may we be healed, as we reach out….” An excellent ballad seeking forgiveness in a sinful world. Lyrics and sound sample.
Psalm 52
Lamentation for trusting in wealth rather than trusting God.
Songs for the Amos passage also fit here.
Tune In / NCYC '07: Forgive us now (Brown). “As we forgive may we be healed, as we reach out….” An excellent ballad seeking forgiveness in a sinful world. Lyrics and sound sample.
NCH Psalter Trust in the steadfast love of God for ever and ever (Marshall) A very simple refrain with a cantored or read Psalm.
AoV2-055 / G(II)513 / GC711 / GC(II)716 May we find richness / Harvest of Justice (Haas) Simple to sing, and good words. Sample sheet music, lyrics and a slo-o-ow tune sample.
Emergent Psalter I am like an olive tree (Everett) A modern, intuitive peaceful refrain. I just love this one.
Colossians 1:15-28
Some nice Christology “image of the invisible God, first-born of creation…. all things created through him and in him”. Reconciliation through Christ’s death, our lives as witness, Christ as Paul’s inspiration and energy.
W&R104 / URW102 Hidden Christ Alive for Ever (Wren) Wonderful and inspiring words of Christ in all things. Can be sung to HYFRYDOL or HOLY MANNA, so would be easily sung by most congregations. A good song for just after the sermon. Lyrics in this article (downloads a pdf) - search for "orbits" to find the lyrics.
TiS 688 Come to be our hope O Jesus (Marachin) This is a really fun Latin American song from the World Council of Churches Assembly in Canberra. It's not easy the first time, but once you've heard it, it's very catchy. The words are really excellent, despite a slightly clunky translation. It would be worth teaching to your congregation! We sang this a couple of times during Advent.
Brunswick UCA resource: Love is the Power (Anderson). Suggestion for the congregation at Brunswick as this is not published yet, but it is in our church folders. It’s a while since we've sung it, but it went down well last time. It's a little bit tricky.
AA036 Every day I will offer you (Murray) “Everyday, in your Spirit, I’ll find the love and energy”… Good song of commitment. Might be good as closing song. This is also in other books of songs by Shirley Murray.
TiS 617 / NCH413 / UMH517 / WoV736 / ELW626 / HPSS342 / W&R75 By gracious powers so wonderfully sheltered Wonderful words by Bonhoeffer. A range of tunes. The tunes BONHOEFFER (NCH) and O PERFECT LOVE work well. I'm not a big fan of the tune in TiS (HIGHWOOD). Lyrics. The 5th verse is omitted in some hymnals.
MV 145 / CP418 Draw the circle wide (Light) A great song about welcoming all people. “Christ the still point of the circle” fits well with the reading this week. Lyrics (downloads a Word document).
AoVK-28 / ATOK 376 Faith hope and love (Watts) This is so easy, and so cool. If you have some groovy musicians, this can even be a very funky rock song. Very easy, and great for kids and non-readers. I think I suggest this about once a month, which may be getting excessive.
TiS 691 Faith will not grow from words alone Excellent strong words of a questioning faith to a familiar hymn tune. Maybe I suggest this often too.
TiS 720 / AHB 295 / AoVK-85 / AoV2-046 / ATOK 319 / NCH236 / Iona (M&G, T1AU) / CH345 / VU958 / StJ / GA107 / SFFS 2026 / HPP571 / GC(II)261 / RS 396 / W&R5 / Cha41 / ZSS76 / URW370 Halle halle hallelujah (Trad Caribbean) I think this passage deserves a hearty Hallelujah and this is one of my favourites. Note that GA and CH have verses!
Luke 10:38-42
Martha and Mary
Taize / CP563 In God alone my soul can find rest and peace / Mon Ame Se Repose (Berthier) A very beautiful chant from Taize. Music and sound samples for practice here.
TiS 693 / AoV1-031 / GA212 Come as you are that's how I want you (Browne) This song is beautiful, gentle, simple, and very well known. Lyrics (search for "come as you are").
TiS 748 / GtB There once was a man as mean as could be (Hannah) Good song for kids and Vs 3 is great for this passage.
Iona (LFB) / G(II)503 / GC701 / RS818 God It Was who said to Abraham (Bell) Easy Celtic style tune. Good story words. Verse 4: Christ is was who said to Martha "Listen first, then make the tea!". Note that God is masculine; I don't know if John Bell has addressed that in more recent editions of Love From Below. Lyrics and sheet music. Slow sound sample.
Gospelling to the Beat One man was Peter he lived by the sea (Llewellyn) A simple kid's song "stop what you're doing and follow me"
Liturgy for the Whole Church p153 Martha and Mary (Bock) A dramatic reading for two women.
